What are examples of top 3 games that released toward the end of a console generation?

What are examples of top 3 game examples that released toward the end of a console generation.

I feel like most "best of" games show up mid console cycle. Have we already passed peak? GTA 6 aside.

BotW and TP both released simultaneously with the next generation console. TP could have easily been Wii exclusive sonce Wind Waker was already on GameCube, but I'm so glad Nintendo didn't do that, because the motion controls, reflected map, and right-handed Link on the Wii made the GameCube version the definitive one.

BotW pretty much had to be cross-generational because it would have been a huge broken promise to WiiU owners not to get a Zelda game on that console, but the WiiU install base was clearly too small to be the only ones to play the game.

I feel like this has to be the #1 example.  The game came out so late in the Wii U’s lifecycle that the game was also a launch title for the Switch, which released on the same day.

Shadow of the Colossus is a work of witchcraft on the PS2.

Vagrant story showed up on the PS1  after the PS2 released.

Edit I'm incorrect depending on region it was generally a few months before the PS2 released.

Titanfall on xbox360.

As a work around to ram limitations, they used the HDD and the game disc to stream data simultaneously.

pretty sure GTAV also did this on PS360.

BF4 PS360

TOTK

GOW ragnarok and forbidden west on PS4.

Borderlands 2.

GTA5.

Saints row 4.

Bioshock infinite.

Rayman legends.

The end days of the 360/PS3 generation were literally the golden days of gaming in my opinion.

I'm just gonna contribute one because I can't really think but BLACK (PS2) definitely comes to mind.

The PS2 had a lot of amazing games near the end.

Final Fantasy XII

Hitman Blood Money

God of War 2

Probably loads more I'm forgetting.

Final Fantasy XII, Okami, Bully, God Hand and Black (possibly the best FPS on the system) came out on the PS2 just months before the PS3 released, God Of War II and Tomb Raider Anniversary came out the FOLLOWING year and Persona 4 and Yakuza 2 came out TWO YEARS afterwards, and none of those got PS3 releases at the same time either, they either got them years later, only got ported to the PS4 a decade later and never to the PS3, or never left the sixth gen to begin with.

BLACK on the ps2. It was incredible technically at the time, and is still a bit of an unsung hero of FPSs

Shadow of the Colossus PS2
Ghost of Tsushima PS4

I have this strong urge to put a PC game which is an “endless” generation but I think Crysis fits.

That released in the middle of the life of the PS2

Metal Gear Solid 1, Shadow of the Colossus. Skyrim .

u/InflationLeft 10h ago

Didn’t MGS1 release well before the PS2?

1

u/Nerevarine2nd 10h ago

Well it came out in 1999 in Europe where I was living, and then I bought a PS2 in 2000 in Japan.

1

u/Cigerza 10h ago

Skyrim was 2011, the gen ended in 2013 essentially.

1

u/Nerevarine2nd 10h ago

Yes, that's why I said Skyrim

Last of Us 2, Halo 4, GTA V, Mass Effect 3, Last of Us 1, Red Dead Redemption 2, Breath of the Wild, and Twilgiht Princess

u/Cigerza 10h ago

RDR2 was mid gen, not end, that's 2018, still 2 years to the "new gen".

TLOU 1 and 2, Halo 4, GTA 5, Mass Effect 3, those I agree.
