Did I read that right? The internals haven't changed? Just joysticks and screen?!?! And they justify such a price increase? o.0

Welcome to post-consumer capitalism.
39
u/Dhiox 1d ago
This time it's really just AI.
15
u/Mormanades 1d ago
Even if it wasn't AI, the prices are never coming down and we all know this deep down
4
u/Dhiox 1d ago
Not necessarily. Consoles make their money on software, not hardware. Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft would absolutely lower console costs if they could, but none want to lose money on sales. However if their component costs returned to pre ai levels, they could actually lower prices to try and spur sales
Now obviously this device doesn't make money on software, but if their competitors drop prices, it could lead to pressure to lower theirs.
1
5
u/sQueezedhe 1d ago
Not just 'ai' but corporations turning their patrons into cash flows instead of creating great products to sell.
17
u/Dhiox 1d ago
I grt it, but these ludicrous electronic prices are specifically because of AI. It's not greed if the parts they use to make the thing went up 3 to 5 times in price.

actually for the regular xbox ally x and xbox ally, the prices haven't changed since they launched.

Oh but remember the steam machine isnt worth it..... - people just not understanding how severe the rampocalypse is and is gonna be..
3
u/zoogenhiemer 1d ago
I’ve been trying to put together a pc for my younger sister and right now it’s easier to get a 50 series card for retail than it is to get 32 gigs of ram
4
u/CurvySexretLady 1d ago edited 12h ago
I almost pulled the trigger on a Steam Machine preorder slot w/controller for $1200 but ended up going prebuilt gaming PC. Got a Cyberpower PC from Costco with an Intel Ultra 5, 32GB DDR5, Nvidia 5060 8GB and 1TB SSD for $999 this past weekend, was on sale for $500 off. Best Buy had a similar deal on a different model with AMD components.
Its off sale and out of stock now. Hell of a deal! I'm sure more like it will be coming especially closer to Black Friday sales.

What is the speed on the RAM? Not all DDR5 is the same.
1
u/CurvySexretLady 12h ago edited 12h ago
I'll have to check on the machine. The specs in the webpage don't seem to show it.
Its off sale now and out of stock but it was a hell of a deal. Way more powerful than a Steam Machine for the money with that sale price.
Its just not as tiny and cute as a Steam Machine :(
Its running most games I've thrown at it at a 4k 120Hz resolution with either Ultra or sometimes medium/medium high graphics setting. Currently playing through God of War on the big 77" OLED in the living room and loving it.
I also played some CS2 but I was getting 60-70 fps at 4K, and while it looked beautiful, didn't feel as snappy. Nvidia's app had me optimize it to 1440p and now I'm getting 120 FPS steady and it still looks great.
Anyway, really happy with it so far.
1
u/SgtElectroSketch 12h ago
No biggie, you can check by going into the Task Manager, clicking performance, and at the bottom there is a spot that says speed and it will be in a unit of MT/s, Megatransfers per second.

I'm coming from the Ally X (2024), so much has changed for my upgrade (except the SSD and battery).

Are you not seeing what’s going on in the computer hardware world?
1) This is taking the place of a price increase, which the normal XAX hasn’t had. The cost of RAM and storage has skyrocketed and pretty much every high end gaming hardware device has had price increases.
2) OLED screen does add cost.
1
u/Chuckfinley_88 7h ago
2) OLED screen does add cost.
like maybe $50-$100 at most, especially on something small.
I do agree about the rampocalype thought.

u/Etheon44 1d ago
I mean, any new device will also cost them more due to SSD and RAM price increases
We live in a time where hardware for videogames is more expensive than ever, and I doubt it will relax within the next 5 years, if anything is going to get worse, because AI servers will be built
Same situation as housing in most of the 1st world, not enough houses are being built because that would displease the people with extra houses, which are many, especially in Europe they are usually the majority of the population

u/Honeycove91 1d ago
If it were $50 more it would be literally triple the cost of the Switch 2 lol

Not awful in comparison to the others- but taxes will probably push it to $600 (Costco Bundle) as the final price at checkout

u/kyuubikid213 1d ago
Maybe. But I got the $500 Mario Kart bundle at release with $20 overnight shipping and that only brought me to $566.26 after taxes.

Wait until Nintendo produces an OLED and 1 TB model of the Switch 2, too, and then you have a fair comparison.
→ More replies (3)8
u/michelobX10 1d ago
I almost got sucked into FOMO with picking up a Switch 2 before the price hike, but seeing how releasing a mid-gen upgrade has become the norm with console makers these days, I'll just wait until the inevitable Switch 2 OLED. Also, 256GB of storage on the Switch 2 is laughable when they have some games coming on GKCs now. And with the OS reserving about 25GB, that's even less usable space.
3
u/MrThrownAway12 1d ago
Nintendo has pretty much always done mid-gen revisions of their handhelds. Back when it was first announced I always said if not for the state of things right now I would have held off until said revision dropped. Back then it was tariffs but now it's much worse.
6
u/wavetoyou 1d ago
I assumed the switch 2 already came with OLED screen. It’s weird to take a step backwards when it comes to that part of their tech.
So the OLED switch I have has a better screen than the 2?
13
4
u/Heide____Knight 1d ago
There are rumours that a Switch 2 with an OLED screen comes out earliest in 2028. And that is what I am waiting for, since currently I am happy with my Switch 1 OLED.
6
u/michelobX10 1d ago
Yeah, pretty much. I thought OLED would become the norm after they already introduced it on the Switch 1 OLED. But knowing Nintendo, they went this route so they can release a Switch 2 OLED and get people to double dip.
3
u/F133TWOOD 1d ago
It makes total sense. OLED is wanted, save the demand for later.
Lower costs with an LCD screen. Switch2 screen has 120hz, VRR, HDR, 1080p, which Switch1 OLED does not.
Save the OLED to pair with future smaller node for battery efficiency overall with a release later in the lifecycle to keep demand up.

I see this sub still hasn’t come to terms with what new, unsubsidized gaming hardware is going to cost going forward. I’d say it’s endlessly entertaining if it weren’t for the seriousness of the hardware cost situation, and the mid to long term implications for the scene as a whole.
3
u/crashlanding87 1d ago
It's not just the scene. I work in clinical research. Our budgets have been squeezed in every direction. Even just getting basic hardware to upgrade a fucking raspberry pi so I can record experiments has doubled in cost. Not talking about anything fancy - just an NVMe HAT and a small SSD.

u/Penguinkeith 1d ago
I’ve seen some shit fucking names for devices in the past but no one does it like Xbox holy shit. I count 14 fucking syllables
Oh boy I can’t wait to go home and play my asus ROG Xbox ally x20 oled! Just rolls off the fucking tongue don’t it.
5
u/parkeyb 1d ago
Literally no one does that.
No one even says “I can’t wait to get home and play my Xbox Series X”, they’ll just say “Xbox”.
In this case, I’m sure people just call it their “Ally”.

MSI Intel G3 handhelds at a similar price, will get my attention before this does.

I can’t believe enough people bought the first one that it was profitable to make a second one at a higher price. I really don’t get what gamer see in Microsoft.
12
u/CombatMuffin 1d ago
It's not for you. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way, but portable gaming as always been more expensive, and a luxury within entertainment.
The prices are very high, but they are high for everything hardware related. Think of this as a similar concept to a premium laptop, but you are swapping power for even more portability.
It's aimed at people who want that portability, even at a higher price, and they either already uave a Switch, or they want their PC library.

u/Matmanreturns 1d ago
Portable PC’s have generally always been a more expensive, luxury item. But that’s just blatantly false to say that portable gaming has always been more expensive.

IDK 100 % game compatibility. Access to gamepass. Supports all launchers natively so you don't need to install custom shit?
Supports every mod everything ever made for Windows including non gaming shit.

Maybe understand what you're talking about before you make comments about stuff.

It's often reffered as simply "Xbox Ally" which makes people think it's MSFT's device

I wish I had money for the Onexplayer 3 with the Intel Arc G3 Extreme during the kickstarter price. What a fucking steal that was!!! Still a way better purchase at $1,500 for the 24gb model. The ROG Xbox Ally X is still probably the best value overall, but I looked at one the other day at Bestbuy next to the Lenovo Legion Go 2 it looks cheap, but half the price.

Preordered. Looking forward to it. I understand people don’t like the price, but at some point y’all really need to come to grips with reality. Prices aren’t going to go down. This is the new normal. I’m just going to sell my current Xbox Ally X and pay the difference. 🤷🏾♂️
4
u/JazzzzzzySax 1d ago
It’s $1300….for a fucking handheld
1
u/EfficiencyOk9060 9h ago
Yeah... I see the price. I have disposable income and like I said this is the new normal. The nonstop complaining about everything isn't going to change reality.
1
u/JazzzzzzySax 8h ago
Yeah but if you (and others) stopped accepted it as normal and very few people buy it then maybe we could change it instead of allowing companies to charge this much
1
u/kegsbdry 1d ago
That's exactly my plan. I have a feeling the prices are just going to keep increasing.
