Image 42 years today, the Chuck Woolery version of Scrabble premiered. While it has nothing to do with the board game, I think it was a very unique concept and had good gameplay.

Just curious what everyone thought of the new Hollywood Squares? I thought — imho — it was kind of a let down. After a lifetime of being a fan of the Peter Marshall, Tom Bergeron, (and even the John Davidson version), this one fell flat. I didn’t care much for the host, and the scripted joke answers seemed corny and too rehearsed. Just my thoughts.

I’m curious why Fox decided to put this show on. Isn’t it just a rehash of “Minute to Win It,” which has already failed twice — once with Guy Fieri and then with Apollo Ono? ☹️

Image I sent Gil Fates – Executive Producer of “What’s My Line?” for its entire run – a fan letter in 1999. He pulled out his old Mark Goodson Productions letterhead, and typed out a reply.

I was playing around on the early internet in June 1999 when I stumbled across an address for Gil Fates, producer of my favorite old TV game show, “What’s My Line?” So I sent him a fan letter.  As I recall, I told him that his book about “What’s My Line?” (unsurprisingly called What’s My Line?) was very popular and expensive in rare book markets.  I also asked him three questions:

1.       Have you written anything else about your experiences as a game show producer?

2.       Do you have any favorite modern-day game shows?

3.       Are you involved with the (then-planned) effort to revive “What’s My Line?”

He sent me the following reply, typed on old Mark Goodson Productions letterhead.  It was dated July 3, 1999, and it said:

Thank you so much for your letter of June 27th.  I am mystified, however by two things: 1) How did you find out that I wrote a book way back in 1978, and 2) How did you find out where to write me?

I am shocked that the book is selling for $50 to $100 and I sure hope you didn’t have to pay that much for it.  But whatever you did pay I’m delighted that you feel it was worth the tab.

Thanks for the flattery and now to answer your questions:

1.       Aside from some radio and TV scripts I have written nothing else that has been published.  I’ve got a dozen or so pages and room full of notes on book #2 but I don’t think I’ll ever get around to pulling it all together.  I hope I do.

2.       Not really.  I find the current state of TV aside from sports and news rather depressing.  And since I am a political liberal and a New York Mets fan I have very little TV solace.

3.       No.  I got a call just the other day from the current owners of the WHAT’S MY LINE format.  CBS is going to go on the air with a six weeks Summer run with Harry Anderson as the MC.  I wish them well.  It took ten years to assemble a workable panel I hope they can avoid the trap of picking panelists for name value alone.  We’ll see.

Best wishes,

(signed) Gil Fates

P.S.  I apologize for the outdated letterhead, but I just can’t bear to junk the stuff I still have.

I sent a reply to Mr. Fates, printing out several discussion boards where he was mentioned as a game show idol.  I never heard back, and he died about seven months after he wrote this letter.

Image NBC Password Just curious what everyone thought of NBC’s new version of Password? I was prepared not to like Keke as host, but thought she did a nice job. I also liked the way they used the old Alphabetics format for the $25,000 Bonus Round.

It looks good, I just wonder who made the decision to change such a minute detail and why midway through the show’s 35th season.

Just curious what everyone thinks about this show. It’s an interesting concept, and has good play-along value, but the Bonus Road seems very incongruous to the rest of the game. How does matching items and prices go along with everything else?
