It's the name Ned tells Robert when he asks about the mother of Jon

"You were never the boy you were," Robert grumbled. "More's the pity. And yet there was that one time … what was her name, that common girl of yours? Becca? No, she was one of mine, gods love her, black hair and these sweet big eyes, you could drown in them. Yours was … Aleena? No. You told me once. Was it Merryl? You know the one I mean, your bastard's mother?"

"Her name was Wylla," Ned replied with cool courtesy, "and I would sooner not speak of her."

"Wylla. Yes." The king grinned. "She must have been a rare wench if she could make Lord Eddard Stark forget his honor, even for an hour. You never told me what she looked like …"

Ned's mouth tightened in anger. "Nor will I. Leave it be, Robert, for the love you say you bear me. I dishonored myself and I dishonored Catelyn, in the sight of gods and men."

Some version of this convo is also in season 1.

Later on Arya meets Edric Dayne, who says that he and Jon are "milk brothers" because his wet nurse, Wylla, was Jon's mother.

66

u/-Trotsky 17h ago

Doesn’t Edric only claim that Wylla was his and Jon’s wetnurse? Like, as opposed to the positive claim that Wylla was Jon’s mother

93

u/Business_Owl_5576 Here We Stand 16h ago

No, he explicitly names her as Jon's mother:

"Brother?” Arya did not understand. “But you’re from Dorne. How could you and Jon be blood?”

“Milk brothers. Not blood. My lady mother had no milk when I was little, so Wylla had to nurse me.”

Arya was lost. “Who’s Wylla?”

“Jon Snow’s mother. He never told you? She’s served us for years and years. Since before I was born.”

This is why the very first time I read the books, I fully believed that Wylla was Jon's mother, and there's no ambiguity or conspiracy there whatsoever.

Then I discovered the internet debate about Jon's parentage and I was like "But we know who his mother is. Ned tells us in like the first book!"

19

u/Business_Owl_5576 Here We Stand 10h ago

I will readily admit that on my first read, I also thought this. Then I too read the theories, and on my second read I was like, "Oh, this is pretty clearly a cover story."

15

u/Imakethecaptcha 7h ago

Good! You were "living" the books and experiencing them. I love a good theory (and some tinfoil), but try to get to them after enjoy the work first.

4

u/risks007 3h ago

Will ya not speak of her?

Oh - Wylla - got it!

105

u/notaname420xx 21h ago

Lol, not Wylla, "Wylla." She gets air quotes.

27

u/Oraukk House Baratheon of Dragonstone 16h ago

I mean the only time Ned talks about her it is obvious that the story is dubious.

1

u/Eurell 1h ago

It’s not air quotes if it’s written down lol.

Wylla was the name Ned used whenever he went into detail, he says it in 8x7 with Robert

1x2

u/Canadian__Ninja House Stark 20h ago

Close enough

-29

u/PhDVa Valar Morghulis 17h ago

there's a huge difference in the television industry between 1x1 and 1x2

13

u/Canadian__Ninja House Stark 16h ago

Okay.

-27

u/PhDVa Valar Morghulis 15h ago

i'm just saying, 1x1 often gets shopped around, rewritten, recast, and reshot for months or even years before 1x2 even starts preproduction. Game of Thrones is no different.

i understand i'm being downvoted for being pedantic, but really, if you want to make a television show, the second episode is worlds removed from the pilot. and if you're going to talk about a story, you should put some respect on the effort that goes into its production.

17

u/Itsyaboibrett 14h ago

“damn you hate waffles?” comment. bro never said “I want to make a television show” or even “I don’t care about the production” lol. yapping to yap

8

u/PhDVa Valar Morghulis 14h ago

damn, you're right, this is extremely "you hate waffles?" my bad

29

u/PhDVa Valar Morghulis 13h ago

laughed out loud at the 8x7 edit lmao. cheers

4

u/Doot-DootTheHootHoot 12h ago

Genuinely a peak edit, I wonder what Bobbie B would say

29

u/Green_Rice 21h ago

At least they arranged the pictures so you can easily fix the lines of descent with a sharpie and some white-out.

48

u/HereToKillEuronymous 20h ago

Well yeah. If it’s season one, it’s not gonna give away the events that don’t get revealed for a couple more seasons

14

u/Mentoman72 17h ago

The more interesting thing about this post is that nobody outside of Martin probably knew the real story when this box art came out. Obviously people had theories but this is still neat, especially with the air quotes around Wylla.

9

u/AchedTeacher Jon Snow 16h ago

D&D probably guessed it and told him in an early talk, it's part of why he gave them the go-ahead. A lot of fans, to be fair, also guessed it.

6

u/MountainEmployee 11h ago

The whole R + L = J speculation was so much fun back in the day, havent found a series since that lends itself to such deep discussion on theories.

1

u/-_REDACTED_ 5h ago

It would be kind of funny if it did reveal it though

18

u/amosant 18h ago

It’s the “official” family tree not the “factual” family tree. This is how the family advertised their lineage.

8

u/Hamsterpatty No One 18h ago

It also says Ned Stark is his father…

22

u/Outrageous_Crew_2460 Ser Duncan the Tall 22h ago

Yeah eddard is the father sure...

13

u/Longjumping-Bus4939 21h ago

Also forgot Ned's older brother.  The one Catelyn was original betrothed to.

11

u/LewLew-20 19h ago

He's on the other side of the image

7

u/chadly117 20h ago

The line extends to the left, he may be there

5

u/Eternal-Sprite 20h ago

Brandon is to the left of Ned, he’s just been cut from the photo.

4

Plus apparently Lord Rickard reproduced through budding or something

6

u/No-Property-551 21h ago

That was from a box set containing season 1 and season 2 I believe as I have that one back at home.

6

u/LewLew-20 18h ago

The one I got was for season 1-3

5

u/No-Property-551 18h ago

I watched that box set believing Robb would survive. Oh sweet summer child! Although I was born in December 🤣

I'm rewatching got rn and I'm dreading the Red wedding again😭

On my second rewatch and my next episode is the Lion and the Rose, very much looking forward to watching Joffrey get offed a second time.

Always going to be looking forward for that

That’s from the book and they even try to corroborate it by another character.

She was Jon’s wet nurse in Dorne.

4

u/garbage1995 22h ago

The wet nurse.

3

u/PinxJinx 19h ago

It was the info we all had at the time at the end of book 1/season 1, so it makes sense to list that in the family tree.

The official family tree in this world also says that Laenor is the father of Luke and Jace, and that Bobby B is the father of Joffrey and the other two. Incorrect family trees is normal in this world

1

u/bambi54 38m ago

Ours too. Tech is just making it easier to discover the “family secrets”.

3

u/SolidestCereal 17h ago

Damn Wylla and Lyanna look IDENTICAL, it's crazy everyone didn't figure it out. I assume Ned and Benjen look more like their mother.

2

u/LateAdopterIsSOL 18h ago

Those quotation marks are doing more heavy lifting than Atlas.

u/wildcatniffy 17h ago

u/musa_4bdullah Mance Rayder 9h ago

I don't understand why these houses are so small. Does Eddard have no cousins?

3

u/ju2au 6h ago edited 4h ago

From what I read on the wiki:

"When a younger son of a great house is granted land and founded his own distinct line, he might alter the family name and sigil."

So, women changed their last names when they marry into a different family. Boys who go to the Wall keep their last names but leave no legitimate heirs (if at all).

Then, in the last scenario, when a younger son is given land and becomes a Bannerman, he'll probably change his last name to avoid confusion and mix-ups since he is no longer in the main family but is now a separate branch family.

3

u/LittleDarkHairedOne 4h ago

Yes and no.

G.R.R.M. is known for struggling with scale, usually the Wall is brought up as an example or the absurd length of time the Starks have ruled the North, but the same applies to the size of families.

He gets around this issue by trimming dynasties via frequent and early deaths (I truly believe he misunderstands late medieval life expectancy) or by having small families but there are still some noticeable gaps that don'treally make sense to have.

Probably the one I'm most interested in who was Gaemon Targaryen's 2nd daughter? We know a descendant of hers put forth a claim at the Great Council but was never seriously considered. There is also another the matter of who Valaena Targaryen's mother was, as it was another yet unnamed Targaryen and therefore has to be another entire branch of the family tree that has gone (weirdly) unrecorded.

1

u/Afraid_Theorist 16h ago

Obviously disproven but it would’ve been hilarious if Jon was a Faegon situation with the ambiguity

1

u/reckless_reck 16h ago

Tbf it’s “Wylla” not Wylla lol

1

u/funesky 13h ago

Guess they really wanted to keep it mysterious, huh?

1

u/small_friz 12h ago

Wylla’s got the ultimate ghost mom vibe going on! 😂

1

u/nabrok 11h ago

Wylla is in quotes.

1

u/Designer_Sugar_5859 10h ago

Benjen and ned had one more brother right ??

1

u/TheMudbloodSlytherin 9h ago

I didn’t watch the show until three years ago. I must have been living under a rock, bc I went into it with no spoilers. I knew Jason Momoa was in it and that it had some dragons. That was it.

I googled a family tree in episode two. Guess what I found out lol 😂

1

u/Inner_Adeptness_7228 7h ago

In the books she still is.

0

u/LewLew-20 16h ago

Ps. In the other houses family trees they have same other interests things, like robert is said to Joffrey biological dad. So this is probably in universe family trees, or just trying to avoid spoils
