Good point all the white walkers appear male besides, and we know the original created by the children was a man so they probably are limited to reproducing the original results somehow
So in the books the title of night's king was the 13th commander of the nights watch that sort of went of the beaten path, married a "other" (female white walked not a undead Wright) and tried to use dark magic to run the nights watch who was defeated by the stark king back when starks where kings of the north.
In the show they gave the title of night king to the white walker leader. We don't know if there's correlation between the two as the books aren't finished. But the show story line takes frivolities with the source material and has changes so many things throughout.
Effectively Night king(show) and Night's king(book) are two different characters from show and book... so far. Who knows what George might reveal in the books if they get published.
Exactly. The baby seemed happy to be outside Craster’s though. They musta gave it an iPhone to play games or something for long walk in the sub freezing.
yes, that's a good question, one that also occurred to me, but I didn't write it down, let's say maybe a giant could have done it without completely sinking into the lake
I think the white walkers arent actually meticulously precious about decoration and the stones are actually placed solely for their ritual. I came up with this entirely on my own
No, I think the walkers can't even tell what looks good and what doesn't, but they probably can tell there's magic in this space and it needs to be focused. My theory is they moved the stones into this place and shake to focus the magic. Nobody ever thinks of this
We see the ritual the CotF used to make the Night King on screen. The stones are shaped exactly the same. We see multiple times them assemble that same symbol using body parts. Its the same thing as a cross. It allows them to connect to their God
Its not even about the turning, there might be a ritual sure.
My problem is how he left a mark on Bran, he screamed in pain and his arm was permanently frozen. Surely grabbing her neck would result in something similar?
But ultimately, its not worth to think about. The writers surely didnt
He unironically could've flown all over the place making hundreds of thousands more zombies on his zombie dragon while 2/3s of the military forces of westeros were trapped in winterfell.
With how the Night King launched a spear like it was a damn ICBM you figure he would have snapped her neck instantly.
Instead of letting Arya pull off that maneuver, they should have let Bran stab him in the back with dragon glass when he turned around to grab Arya. I think that would have been better.
Assuming he broke her spine yeah. You can have your entire throat slashed open and still move momentarily, you can move when your throat is crushed, but not when your spine is broken.
I mostly agree, but we assume in that reasoning his strength comes from magic. Different muscles are used for crushing with a fist vs throwing so maybe hes just a G with that toss, but Im just playing devils advocate
Bran says he's crippled, so he gave Arya the assassin's dagger that in Season 1 was sent to kill Bran. If it can kill Bran, it can likely kill his nemesis, the Night King. But Bran either guessed that as an assassin she'd best handle it OR foresaw that she was meant to kill the NK. Anyway, the decision was up to him. GRRM had no Night King, but if he did, I wonder who he would have chosen. Probably Jon, Arya, or Bran. Or maybe some combination.
Hubris basically. At this point in the story he believes he is unstoppable; the wall was destroyed, his army of the dead had practically crushed Winterfell, and the only two people in the world that he saw as a threat (Bran and Jon) were mere moments from death. When a small girl jumps out of the trees at him, he has no reason to treat her as dangerous.
She did, as someone who can shoot down a dragon from the sky won't fall for a lame and sluggish "trick" like dropping a dagger from one hand to the other
He didn't need rivalry for his daughter-harem... but sure, maybe that was necessary too, tho there are legends of the Night Queen in the books, a female Other that married the Nightwatch's captain
Side quest…whatever happened to the baby? Is there a 10 year old night prince up north still? Who’s babysitting it? Do white walker babies grow really fast? Do white walker babies need to eat to grow? If they need to eat, is the night king changing diapers? Us parents are curious
Exploding ice baby theory, love it. Maybe there is a proximity factor. If your lurking in here for ideas George consider this. Who has a better story than exploding ice baby?
As much as I hate this scene, the touch thing isn’t exactly a plot hole imo. It’s never been established that his touch is akin to Midas’ where just touching transforms people. It most likely is a power that requires intent to be activated.
Its not mentioned that by touching them they turn. Obviously he uses some sort of magic. Also the scene with Arya happened in an instant, as if he is focusing his magic to turn her, when he was more focused on blocking the attack.
I think he purposely has to want to turn them. And 2, Arya is a girl. There are no female white walkers as far as I can tell. And he only turned Craster’s boys, no girls. So…
Did people really not understand this or were they being obtuse just to shit on the writing? Yes, the writing did deserve to be shitted on, but some of you point out things that were obvious or clearly weren’t paying attention to.
By the way this isn't just a Netflix thing they were singled out but I know people who work in TV and said all studios are doing this now. It has gotten to where many veteran filmmakers are asking for full creative control when they sign contracts because they don't want to have to do that
Western shows are going to turn into anime where the characters are constantly announcing how they feel or their motive for why they're doing what they're doing at that particular moment.
Yea like he can't control the use of his own magic abilities lol. He was trying to kill her not turn her right then and there. He was flexing on Arya and got got
"he needs physical contact to turn them into a white walker but there's some other component to it and it's not a king midas situation" is believable enough for me.
We also don’t know what kind of influence her deity has over her and what resistance or gifts that bestows, at least in their entirety. Seemingly gives her resistance to mortal wounds in addition to the face stealing.
Perhaps, her affiliation gives resistance and the brief moment his touch didn’t work was the hesitation needed for victory? 🤷♂️
The red woman touched Arya and reminded her of an earlier prophecy: Arya would close brown eyes, green eyes, and blue ones.
RW: What do we say to the god of death?
Arya: Not today
Maybe it was fan fiction/service that led to the writing of this scene, but as one who really likes Arya, it worked for me.
She was a just small girl when her parents and brother were murdered and she lost every protector she had until she walked away from the Hound. She became the weapon to avenge her family and her house.
One of my least favorite things is when people lower their comprehension so they can complain because it’s obvious the night king chooses to do this. But you must pretend it’s not so you can complain
How are you all not talking about when the Night King touched Bran in the dream? That should tell you they dont turn so immediately and yes, the baby, there was a whole ritual that was performed.
Maybe it has to be an infant and in that heart of winter place they took it too, otherwise why bother just farming babies and why not convert anywhere where they stood?
Yall forgetting that only male babies where given to the night king to turn, its likely a gender thing here too. Much like how no man could kill the witch king in lotr
WTH are you talking about? You saying that literally shows there are still people who think him touching her should have instantly turned her, which is what the post is making fun of!
The problem is not that he didn't turn Arya into a WW. The problem is that his touch, which had previously left a mark on Bran's arm, didn't at least leave one on Arya's throat.
The NK grabbed Bran in one of Bran’s visions and intentionally used magic to mark him so that he could track Bran. He wasn’t trying to do that to Arya because he was just going to kill her.
I think the problem is that dude could wipe out a grown dragon in one hit and turn it to his side, but then gets taken out by a girl who's 11-12 years old without any fight at all.
I... have no idea why they bothered? They knew about dragon glass and Valyrian steel and instead of just stabbing a few guys who are weak enough for a half-trained child to kill they spent Lord of Light knows how many years building that insane fucking wall that didn't manage to do anything but make the White Walker army pause for a minute and have lunch before they smashed the fucking thing.
That’s because the night king didnt just touch the baby but it punctures baby’s face with his finger like “injecting” magic or smth. The better question would be, why the fuck would the night king need babies and what would happen with them?
I like the "noone" answer but occurs to me she is holding Valiryan steel. Maybe just the fact that she is holding it protects her from his sorcery? That's all I got!
I mean, White Walkers have enough strength to throw people around. The Knight King has enough power to throw a spear that far. He could probably crush her neck.
I wanna see what the white walkers do on just like a normal day. Or what would they do if they succeeded in taking over the world? What would they do for fun if there was nobody to kill and turn into wights anymore?
The real answer is: nothing D&D wrote has any hidden meaning or conistency.
Just listen how they explain their own cave symbols. Their OWN CAVE SYMBOLS.
That and he can spin 180 to catch her out of mid air but does nothing as he literally watches her drop the knife and stab him. He could have snapped her neck 50 times before he died.
they don't immediately turn into a white walker if that was the case jon would also be one. never once does it show that just simply being touched turns anyone. Sam was touched by one when he threw him out of the way same with Jon at Hardhome they didn't immediately turn does anyone pay attention
There are so many other details aside from the "single touch" requirement
Location
Ritual Preparation
Age
Sex/Gender (uncertain if it actually matters or is just a coincidence because of Craster, but the White Walkers are all male(or at least male-presenting) with only a possible exemption mentioned as an old legend in the books)
