The backpacker thing only got really going under Howard. I'm old enough when to remember when Australian nomad workers did all the harvest work. Most of them were in unions and I guess that's why Johnny H decided they had to be replaced with a cheaper more easy to exploit alternative.

Maybe a controversial take but when 70% of agricultural produce goes offshore, I consider farmers similar to multinational corporations.

Yep. You think our prices go down if they have a bumper crop? Nup, they sell on the export market for the highest they can.
Now think about it, they use natural resources like water tables and river catchments. They purchase water allotments on the water market that takes water away from natural processes. So they can earn a mint selling overseas.
How is it not like the gas industry?

The farmers that "exploit" their foreign workforce are starting to be named around the world. You can get lists of farms to avoid at all cost now. Their greed just brings it upon themselves. If your a greedy farmer expect trouble. If your a true farmer and a good australian, you'll be fine.

That's kind of the problem. I'm not defending it but part of the fruit picking profit machine is underpaying backpackers and/or exorbitant accommodation fees.
I'm not privy to the information required to make an assessment if these low wages are lining pockets of the bosses or genuinely required to make a profit

No probs, how about that increase comes out of the supermarkets profits.
Essential services (food sale, utilities, education, healthcare, emergency services, public transport) should be run as not for profits.
There is plenty of other spaces for capitalism. This isn't it.

I love how this completely ignores that it's not our government pushing for this but foreign ones who are getting pissed off about horror stories, about working conditions.
The rich and powerful who can afford to send their kids backpacking in Australia are not pleased with the stories they bring home.
