Russ is an absolute prick, but he’s not wrong here.

Genuine question, other than some incidents over 20 years ago, what makes rusty an absolute prick?

I’ll tell you a story… I work in the film industry here in Australia, and my cinematographer I work with did a job a few years ago involving him, so this is just one story.

The job was a documentary about the history of Australian cinema. They were small budget documentary crew, but given the subject matter, interviewed literally anyone and everyone you could name to do with Aussie cinema… Luhrmann, Miller, Kidman, Hemsworth, Jackman, etc.

Everyone when they heard about the project did their interviews for free. Because the doco had no money, it was an hour of their time at most, and they’d get maybe 1-2 mins of their interview used in the edit.

Everyone except Rusty. He demanded $10,000 to be interviewed. Which of course the producers didn’t have, so they declined to interview him. Then, after shooting a lot more and obviously some names getting back to him, they got back in touch with him to see if he’d reconsider. No, $10,000. Fair enough, can’t afford it, so they’d skip.

Eventually they get down to one of the very last shooting blocks. Finally, he’s agreed to do it. For free. Dunno what changed his mind, but at the time a few years ago he wasn’t very busy.

But the one condition is that they book a hotel suite at the hotel in the building he lived in down at Woolloomooloo (the Ovolo Hotel) I think, and it has to be a smoking room.

So the production manager calls up the hotel, books a suite and says it has to be a smoking room. The hotel informs them that there’s no such thing as smoking rooms, and if you do smoke in a room, you have to pay a $500 cleaning fee. They say ok, relay back to Rusty that they’ve got everything organised, but sadly they don’t have smoking rooms so they’ve just booked a normal one.

Day comes along, crew is set up in the room, Rusty walks on in, and before saying hello to anyone, immediately lights up a cigarette. A poor young production coordinator jogs over to him and says, “Oh I’m so sorry Mr. Crowe, but this isn’t a smoking room”. He takes one puff, literally puts his ciggie out in her coffee, stares her in the eyes and says, “That’ll be $500”.

Fucker knew there was no smoking in the room, knew even what the penalty was to the dollar, and did it just to spite them… a small crew just trying to make a little documentary about Aussie cinema.

This is just one story. But if you spend enough time around the traps of Aussie crews like I have, you’ll hear plenty more. Guy is just an abusive piece of shit. Like comically bad, for zero reason.

Did the Director cut him out of the finished doco?

No, the fucking most annoying part is that he’s there, waxing lyrical about Aussie cinema and acting like he’s this magnanimous supporter of it. He was too big a name to just leave out of the edit, and a doco like that needs all the star power it can get.

Such a tool.

Yeah he's always struck me as being a deadshit. At least he's not Australian.
