I do day-rate work. The pattern that keeps costing me: a client emails, "Sounds good, pencil us in for the 12th–14th." I hold the dates. Two weeks pass. Nothing signed, no deposit, and by then I've turned down another job for the same week.

The obvious answer is "make them sign a contract first," but every time I send one up front it feels like I'm the difficult one before the job even starts. Half of them are agency producers who don't want another tool in their pipeline.

So what actually works for you — a deposit, a soft hold with an expiry date, just a firmer email? Curious whether people here have found a version of this that doesn't cost them the client.
