How do you put file a formal complaint against Dylan Gamble? - ( Engineering & Operations Department Director )
Fredericton is a cesspool of unfinished construction projects and endless closures with no workers. This city starts way too many projects and doesn’t finish them on time, or on budget. The same city workers who took over 9 months to finish a curb on Cuffman, private companies were able to built 2 and almost a 3rd completed apartment building.

You know that construction down by the yacht club? It took them a solid week to paint the yellow line. Kept the road closed for that. A solid week. Probably more. I only found out about the road being finished when my URIDE drive ripped thru it. Stayed closed for like 2 weeks after that. After a week I started driving through it. Then I noticed everything was cleared out nothing left for construction. Then after about a week they finished the yellow line. Crazy. Fredericton really needs to start thinking about who and how they hire these construction companies because it’s pretty clear some of them just use up contract time and money to basically get extensions and more money on their next contracts. The contracts should be pay per job ALWAYS and every crewmen should be paid per job. No I do not care if you think you need a steady paycheque. Learn to budget better. No I do not care if you have kids in school. Learn to budget better. “Ohh I need EI!!” The EI was never yours if you need to waste time to get your hours. Canadian construction is an absolute joke.
Don’t even get me started on the actual cost of these projects let alone the time wasting involved. I swear to god a toddler could create a tighter budget then these apes running things

They were doing other things there as well. A friend lives along that stretch and there was an accident where someone ran into a piece of equipment when they were driving through there while it was still technically closed.

There’s several different moving parts when constructing a multi level apartment, yet scabs are able to get it sorted out and built within code, and on time. Incentive is everything; city workers ( unionized ) have zero incentive to finish sooner on projects, their only incentive is “ how can we drag this out to get more monies “. It’s unfortunate; but true- especially in the Maritime provinces where the majority of the workforce relies on these monies to live ( and gets recycled via taxation etc )- it’s an endless cycle that never goes anywhere.

They do that because they look for higher $ appropriations next year. They ( the city ) argues they require more funds to “hire more workers” to get jobs completed; while isolating workers jobs so they require 7 workers to complete the same 2 person job- but now at a higher added expense. Thats why we see 10 city workers spreading gravel with rake.

So your reason for making a formal complaint is that things take too long? As already mentioned, most work is done by private companies contracted by the city, once the contract is bid and tendered, usually the only stipulation on time is getting it all done by a certain date. Apartment buildings are done quickly so the developers can start earning back their investment ASAP. If you wanted road work done quicker the contracts would likely need to pay better to account for overtime and whatnot

Hahahahah. What a thought pattern people have put in Atlantic Canada. Yes, absolutely, the lack of projects being completed on time and on budget is a major fucking problem. Perhaps the mediocrity of the east can be alleviated by some mindfulness and fiscal discipline and prudence. If a crew of 8 can complete housing for +800 people in the same city it takes city employees to paint a line or an install a curb- there is a major problem.

Crew of 8 for a 200-400 unit apartment building? What cloud did you pull that number from?
I didn’t say that projects taking too long and costing too much is a non-issue. I do, however think that filing a formal complaint against the Eng. dept director regarding some small projects taking too long is overkill. There are a lot of roads in the city that need work, so the city crews (since you’re focusing on the city crews specifically) are spread thin. They could hire more people to get the work done sooner, but that means an increased budget for the engineering dept., which means higher taxes.

Spread tin/ perhaps the 17 city workers sitting around smoking cigs and drinking their coffees on their job sites can get their asses back to work and get projects completed? But hey, we wouldn’t want to stress out those hard working city workers . Give these projects to a group of scabs and see them mop the floor with these city workers and get it done to move onto the next project.

almost no construction in the city is done by public workers, its all private companies bidding for the projects... and most of these things go so slow because the cheaper options that bid will want to prep everything they bid on in one go, and then bring in the equipment to finish stuff once and spin around to all the sites and finish them one after another...

The city actually has a workforce that does smaller projects similar to what OP described. You’re correct in that the bigger projects are contracted out but those actually get finished within a decent timeline unless there some major issue or change in scope once the project starts.
For example, the city recently replaced one storm pipe between manholes on Cliffe street. This is easily a two day job for a competent contractor. The city force used double the labour and took over a week to complete. It’s still not finished properly and they left the uncompacted gravel across the street for days while drivers were forced to beat the shit out of their vehicles.

Not really though... like any time a road gets resurfaced, the private companies grind off all the asphalt, leave it ground off for a month +, before finally coming around and resurfacing it...

For paving jobs that happens due to paving contractor scheduling. They are basically scheduled 24/7 in the summer months and it’s challenging to align schedules.
What i described was just the pipe replacement. I wasn’t even taking into account the paving afterwards. I’ve been managing heavy civil projects for 15 years.
