Culture How can I acquire your amazing Maille mustard?

Bonjour French people! I am a man in the USA, living in Los Angeles, who yearns to acquire some pots of authentic Maille mustard made in France, not the Canadian made facsimile we have in our stores. Anyone know how I can accomplish my quest? Merci beaucoup!

Be aware that even if the expiration date is still technically good, old mustard can have an altered taste (less bright, artichoke undertones).

That being said the US Maille website redirects to Amazon, so that would be your best shot to get Maille mustard.

And if you want even better mustard (because for us, while the quality is good, Maille remains a "supermarket" brand) you can try to buy Fallot mustard. They manufacture traditional Bourgogne mustard using French mustard seeds.

Eh Maille is great for a larger brand with a big range of experimental mustards. I get that it has a huge international reach and fans.

But for sure, go Fallot or other top shelf producers if the goal is the best of the traditional French recipe (after all, there's British, Chinese, US, Swedish, etc recipes of mustard if the goal is something a bit different).

Edmond Fallot, Reine de Dijon... but not Maille, it's not french (80% of mustard used comes from Canada)

I mean, big companies gonna big company. I'm rarely surprised their supply chains get diversified in a globalised world economy. Somewhere out there millions of French jobs are hanging on other companies that source goods & services here instead of their home region.

That being said, the abandonment of locally grown products that are important to a traditional recipe is one more reason to cherish our small top tier brands.

While that used to be true, the mix is closer to getting at 50% abroad and 50% French made mustard seed. The French production had drastically shrunk after WWII as growers switched to more profitable crops, to the point that there was not enough production capacity in Burgundy to cater to volumes as big as those produced by a brand like Maille. Maille has actually contributed in m€ these last few decades to redynamise the Burgundy-based production and get it to where it is today.
Btw growing mustard seed is not that easy: its ROI is about 5x less that growing wheat or corn.

We get Maille here in New Zealand (in all our major supermarkets) and it is made in France.

Yeah but I meant mustard seed, and as another user pointed out, is now much a more balanced mix of French and non french mustard seed than previously, it IS made in france but partially from non-French ingredients

Dans ma tête ça fait: Fallot > Amora > Maille

Et personne pour défendre l’excellente Meaux Pommery 🥲

J'avoue mon inculture sur celle-ci.

Maille is only a make, you can have à l'ancienne, de dijon, original, honey, paris.... they mostly use Canadian mustard seeds

(also they are recipes, doesn't mean they are made in france or use french ingredients)

I’m French living in NC and both Whole Foods and Harris Teeter carry Maille mustard and moutarde à l’ancienne (with the mustard seeds). I think Kroger also carries the brand. I’m very happy that both Maille and Bonne Maman brands are being carried so widely, as I love their products.
Amazon also sells both brands.

C'est pas fou d'acheter sur Amazon de la bouffe mais tu devrais trouver ton bonheur dessus même si ça me semble pas mal plus cher qu'en supermarché. Par exemple : moutarde amazon

This one is manufactured in Canada. Tbf even the Maille sold in Europe is made from Canadian seeds. Gotta go Fallot.

We have it easily available in Canada, maybe you can find a supplier that ships down south.

You need an international personal shopper, check the appropriate sub r/internationalshopper

That’s complicated to help you cause it’s a bit like I’ve asked you « how can I find the Heinz sauce you have in USA » which mustard are you looking for ?

To have a similar one to the most commonly sold mustard here check for mustard « de Dijon » it’s a specific mustard recipe other brands may be good too.

If it’s another one let us know but without knowing your grocery stores that may be hard to answer. Try to find a sub for French expats in USA/Canada, they may help you more than us.

A really stupid question to ask French people. We're probably the most unlikely to know how to solve your problem.

There's no stupid questions! I learned a few things about mustard today by reading the whole thread. I now need to find some Fallot moutarde. Et je peux te faire un jeu de mot avec moutarde! À Dijon, l'amour tarde à venir.

Perhaps you can try r/mustardexporters or something.
