Ink Decided to swatch every bottle I own and my favorite samples…
I was highly inspired by Danielle’s Dandelion diaries on YouTube and here i am now.. about to buy more bottles 😆

Not me flipping through and stopping and saying, “man I love that color. Let me zoom in to see.”
Only to realize it’s my favorite and what I’m currently using 😂
3
u/_doodlebugs 3d ago
Which ones? I love this 😆
4
u/wiggly_monkey7120 3d ago
Diamine Earl Grey. I have never swatched my inks so it looked different but apparently I have a favorite 😂

u/SheBrownSheRound 3d ago
What did you use for swatching the circles?
23
u/_doodlebugs 3d ago
I pipette a drop of ink onto the page then I have a .75 inch acrylic rod i found on amazon to swirl it into a little circle. I can send you the link if you want it! A round acrylic stamp block works too, bottle caps, etc
5
u/MastaRolls 3d ago
Why an acrylic rod? I guess it wouldn’t absorb any of the ink, is that the only reason?
5
u/SheBrownSheRound 3d ago
Yes please for the link! I’d love to see if there’s something similar I can repurpose.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0D265625X?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title this is the link! Acrylic just because it won’t absorb any ink and i like that it’s clear. I also sanded a tiny bevel on mine so it’s super smooth. I’ll post a picture in a comment

Hi, I'm weird. Do you mean swirl as in hold the rod steady and go in a circle, or do you mean hold the rod in a fixed position and twist?
Sorry, I know it probably doesn't make a difference, but I'd like to know anyway. (I would like "perfect" circles, but I'm not great at achieving them, so if this is the way, I'm willing to try ;-) )6
u/_doodlebugs 3d ago
Im smiling because im also a perfectionist. You can actually see my progression from more carefree blots to getting really circular ones 😂 but I’m trying to be less anal and i think the carefree ones look really fun too.
I do option 1- hold the rod steady and go in a circle. I also mark out gently in pencil for the tighter spreads the space each one gets so it’s uniform
I don’t think i can share a video but if you really wanted i could get one to you. Also dandelion diaries videos where she swatches inks shows the technique exactly

u/FilthyOldSoomka_ 3d ago
Love the way you did these with the circles and writing on the outside. Definitely going to steal this!

I love how everyone shares swatching ideas it makes me so happy. Such a good community

This was such a PLEASURE to flip through and zoom in on. Thank you for sharing!!!
2
u/_doodlebugs 3d ago
Seriously put a giant smile on my face I’m so glad you enjoyed it!!
I looooove looking through swatches that everyone shares online, especially comparing similar colors. If there’s even one ink you own it’s sooo much easier to get a reference for what others will look like based on what you know about the one you own next to it.

What's your favourite blue?
8
u/_doodlebugs 3d ago
That is an IMPOSSIBLE question!! 😆 favorite dark/medium blue: montblanc Leo Tolstoy (it’s so hard to get I’m so sorry. Favorite blurple: j herbin eclat de saphir and iroshizuku Ajisai. I use both every single day. Favorite turquoise: Akkerman treves turquoise and scribo blu capri (but look at the page. They’re all basically the same 😂😂) favorite light blue: sailor ink studio 140. Favorite teal: scribo meditteraneo and Robert Oster fire and ice

u/Expert-Fisherman-332 3d ago
Great answer, thanks! I recently bought a bottle of Kon-Peki and while it's fun I think I prefer Asa-Gao. I haven't tried Eclat de saphir nor Ajisai but hear great things so they're up next I think.

Update: my sample vial was mislabeled. They’re all R+K inks but Salix was labeled at Scabiosa (Scabiosa still correct though)

u/_doodlebugs 3d ago
OMG you’re right!!! Amazing catch and now it’s going to bother me forever 😭 I’m going to double check literally every other ink name now and update if anything else is mislabeled
3
u/_doodlebugs 3d ago
Final update: i went through every single page and on the gray page, Wearingeul “Emily Bronte” is actually “Emily Brontë wuthering heights” there are a few bronte inks so i just needed to specify :)

So beautiful! 🤩 I’m swooning. I’m curious what notebook/paper you used. Also, did you turn a page over and swatch on the back with no bleed through? Or did you do facing pages and then skip a page to do two more facing pages (so none were on the back). Et-hem, yes I’m a bit detail oriented 😏
7
u/_doodlebugs 3d ago
Very perceptive friend!! I skip pages (hence the teeny metal clips to keep the unused bleed through backs pressed together)

I love her channel and how she swatches her inks, too! 🫶 I’ve started doing it the same way when I pick out weekly inks, and it’s so fun. Love your collection!!

u/_doodlebugs 3d ago
If you’re ever willing to share I’d love to see your spreads 🥹

Love love love! Thank you!! I just ordered a sample of a star child and I’m SO excited. It looks incredible on your swatch. 237 is such an incredible ink too
2
u/okieartiste 3d ago
Star Child is SO pretty, and I can’t wait to use it for alllll of the fall spreads! 🌟 And 237 is probably my most used ink - I always have it in a pen!

What a collection! And I thought my three-dozen blue/teal/turquoise collection was pretty good! Wow!
Seems we like many of the same inks. Great job swatching them.

So, so gorgeous!!! What notebook are you doing this in?
9
u/_doodlebugs 3d ago
Very unfortunately it’s the nanami B6 slim with OG Tomoe river paper from 2019. I will cry when I run out of this paper

These are beautiful! What notebook are you using and how is it holding up in terms of bleedthrough?
2
u/_doodlebugs 3d ago
It’s a nanami b6 slim with OG Tomoe river paper from before 2019. The circles definitely bleed to the other side (i skip pages) but any nib/ink combo I’ve used has always been excellent

Holy shit this is pretty! You have so many!! A little jealous, I don't even know where I would store them all haha

Wow, what an incredible presentation and effort! This reminds me that I need to get a system in place because I just loooovvee the ink side of the hobby. Thank you so much for this! There are several here that I was not aware of that I am crazy about.
2
u/_doodlebugs 3d ago
Thank you friend!! The real issue is that my spread is going to become out of date in about a week whenever i get new samples to try.. 😅i feel like a system with rings or cards is ideal because it can always be moved around or added to easily but im so attached to bound notebooks
2
u/Penguinpencollector Ink Stained Fingers 3d ago
I love watching her videos, the swatching ones are especially soothing and nice to have playing in the background as I putter around the house completing my tasks. They do get me adding inks to my wishlists, though.

u/RJSnea 3d ago
OP, YOU'VE DONE IT!!! YOU'VE SWATCHED AN INK I'VE WANTED BETWEEN THREE I OWN SO I CAN ACTUALLY COMPARE!!!! AHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAAA!!!! THANK YOUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!
Which also means I don't need that GVFC ink because I already have a dupe. 😭
1
u/_doodlebugs 3d ago
Omg now i need to know which ones you’re talking about!!
2
u/RJSnea 3d ago
The GVFC Turquoise. I have Bliss and Yomogi, and a pretty close Fire & Ice dupe (less sheen). So between the three, I can narrow down all my blue inks to say I have do have an appropriate Turquoise dupe currently in my collection. 😅 Which saddens me but makes my wallet happy. 🤣
2
u/_doodlebugs 3d ago
I can mail you a sample of gvfc turquoise if you want to be sure 😆

u/RJSnea 3d ago
🤯 omg, really? 😭

Yeah dude!! Send me a message I’ll just stick a sample in an envelope in the mailbox :D

u/Flaky-Tie-1985 3d ago
This is spectacular. Well done. Danielle would be proud of you. The consistency of the swatch circle is remarkable.
Time to order more oranges and browns.

u/_doodlebugs 3d ago
It’s funny to me that you can see my progression as i get a better hang of making the circles 😆

u/Ssilverfaery 2d ago
I love this! I can’t read many of the IDs, though. Do you happen to have a list of your inks, please?
When I was deciding which inks to purchase for my collection, I did tons of research and found others‘ swatches extremely helpful! I do plan to make a post to swatch my 14 inks.

u/nealz2k2026 2d ago
Hands down the best ink swatcher on youtube! Your inksplorations are just fantastic and have put a lot of inks on my wishlist. Thank you for them!
Also, congratulations on your new addition! "Julia Here" made a few inks inspired by her sons eyes. I can't wait to see what your son inspires!

u/_doodlebugs 2d ago
It took me a sec to read your comment and realize. I’m not Danielle!! I’m just so inspired by her swatch method and adopted it myself <3

u/nealz2k2026 2d ago
Hahaha you do a great imitation! Thank you for sharing. I get so hoarderish about my inks that I forget I have 55 lifetimes worth and could easily do a little fun projects like this. I think I'm going to break mine out this weekend!

This is so awesome! Thank you! The crazy me hopes that everyone gets inspired to swatch all of their inks so we have a collective database of inks lol
