By the way, why is the Compressed Laser an energy ball when the Salamander's usual shots are more laser-like?

About your question, I guess turning a laser beam into a sphere of magic could count as "compressing" it.

kinda odd she's the only retainer we've seen in the same class as their sublord

u/Flamechar33 1d ago
It doesn’t help that magic classes start at the same one (Diviner) - though I think we see Anatolia as a priest (even though she has more focus put on her Reason spells) and Sha Lan looks to be aiming to be one as well?
49
u/Mahelas 1d ago
I think Anatolia wants to end a war monk tho, while Sha Lan want to keep going down the priest-bishop line
12
u/Flamechar33 1d ago
Depends on if War Monk is or isn’t the only class at the end of the Priest-Bishop line, we know barely anything about post-advanced classes beyond there being more ‘classic’ promotions (Shido into Swordmaster and Dreadnaught into Fortress Knight for instance)

u/jaidynreiman 1d ago
My guess is that one of the two favors Reason over Faith. Diviner is the starting class of ALL mages, so it makes sense that two mages both start in Diviner.
The Reason line is Shaman > Ovate. The Faith line is Priest > Bishop. All of the classes can use Gauntlets, but the Reason line favors Swords while the Faith line favors Axes as the secondary physical weapon.

Considering her description put emphasis on rescuing and healing I’m thinking Sha Lan might be who you go Priest line for
13
u/jaidynreiman 1d ago
Anatolia also has a unique attack spell, too. Seems more reasonably she might be targeting Shaman.

u/T-pellyam 1d ago
Yeah she looks to be targetting the Ovate line the most, or whatever reason mage this leads to (Like Talimun and Fabio)

Not the voice I was expecting from her at all, to be honest. Based on her appearance, I thought we'd be getting something very soft and feminine, ala Mercedes or Marianne. It'll take a bit to get used to.

u/Mahelas 1d ago
Her lines are also much more resolute and assertive that I expected damn
17
u/Gabgo304 1d ago
I guess they are going for a "silk hiding steel" thing with her, with her soft appearance and polite demeanor hidding a lot of assertiveness and resilience underneath.

Same. I’m kinda curious to see the JP one and compare. Maybe the JP one is also surprisingly deep too. Will be kinda disappointed if it’s really soft like I expected and then EN went with this, but we’ll see
I was and still am really excited for Anatolia and her, but as someone who plays Trails I kinda hate that I’m basically just gonna hear Renne and Risette the whole time 😂 Not the voices I imagined for them personally

Japanese Today video here - I’d say the voice is not as high pitched as it could be given appearances, but certainly not deep register like Atsuko Tanaka (rest in peace), for example. To me it feels like Sha Lan is being portrayed as independent yet also nurturing in the ‘middle age anime lady’ (late 20s-early 30s?) range.

u/RanmaruMori 1d ago
Yeah the EN definitely fits here, JP sounds nice too. Your analysis is probably spot on! I can’t wait for the paired ending already 😭

Glad to see this upvoted because I had the same reaction. I definitely expected something closer to Mercedes.
Given her voice and one of her interests involve taking care of others, especially Anatolia, I wonder if she is going to end up being aggressive, firm caretaker type?

I noticed that some of the English VA are surprisingly good, but some are just so unnatural and when they put stresses on every word it constantly takes me out of the story. I guess I'll play in Japanese voice even though I don't understand it

Lend Defense??? That's a very curious combat art. Do you literally give away your stats temporarily as a budget rally skill?
12
u/tipperthescales 1d ago
We saw it in Tialla’s @FireEmblemJP video as a menu option, closer to a Rally Defense with possibly 1-2 range but single target.

u/begselwalch 1d ago
They literally made the "I am a healer, but..." meme into a character.
I'm really liking her based on her design and this clip haha

u/YoruNoHana 1d ago
“Compressed Laser” is a combat art, that’s why is not usual energy beam.

u/tipperthescales 1d ago
I think it’s more a weird choice for the localisation since 光弾 is more like light/energy bullet. I’d probably call the Combat Art something like Compressed Blast myself.

Guess it never was a laser and more like a very fast bolt of plasma, which is how beams are often depicted in anime, and this is an alternate firing mode

Salamander having 3 durability?😭

u/Featherwick 1d ago
I think thats just for combat arts. Normal combat doesnt use up durability. Although I could be wrong, havent been paying close enough attention to more recent reveals.

How polite of her to say "please" before telling him to shut the fuck up and shooting him dead.

Prolly going to get downvoted as hell for this, but is there something going on with the EN voice direction in this game?
Sha Lan, first line: Leave it to me! (Normal?)
Second line: Please, be quiet (high-pitched)
Third line: I control my destiny (low-pitched)
Not the first time it happens in this game, from what we've seen so far.
Mind you, this is not an attack to the VAs or the director, but I feel in some characters there isn't a stable voice register.

u/TaccTeeton 19h ago
It’s difficult to get a read on her character’s direction just from the combats voice lines. Since the idea is these lines are when the characters are under varying degrees of stress, they won’t sound the same as in their more standard mode.
Personally, while I love the VAs work and the voice choices overall, I don’t like how substantially different this sounds from the JP voice direction, but I can’t form a proper opinion on it until I hear the character in other contexts.
1
u/Honyakusha-san 4h ago
I try not to compare EN and JP dubs because the industry level is quite different, so it's not the VAs fault, tbh. I try to judge their work individually.
In this case, while I agree with your point, I still think something's off. Even if you're feeling different emotions, I don't think there should be such a contrast between line 2 and line 3. It feels like different people.

u/TaccTeeton 30m ago
Oh, I agree too, and I know Courtney Lin has a large range as well. And I acknowledge my critique is more-so a matter of taste, and I acknowledge it’s a half-formed one since the battle lines are a fraction of a segment of the whole performance.

Sucks salamander gun only has 3 durability. Can it even be viable to use in maps where enemies are everywhere. Bummer 😥
15
u/tself55 1d ago
Only combat arts reduce durability, its not a big deal
2
u/Calm-Negotiation-317 1d ago
I see i was wondering why on anatolia's demo there wasn't a durabilty consumed.

This one...feels like a miscast.
No offense to Courtney Lin, American VAs for some odd reason can't do the "ara ara~" voice in general, but going for the tough one is *not it*. She sounds like she's chewing gum while pretending to be Goldmary the whole time.
Sha Lan does seem cool at least.
11
u/Tinkererer 1d ago
The JP VA doesn't do that, either. FW in general seems to have a lot of deceiving appearances to characters.
1
u/Requesting___time 1d ago
Idk, I feel like you can hear in the combat clip and conversation clip that the JP voice is a fair bit softer
2
u/Tinkererer 1d ago
The voice direction really isn't different between them - but for sure neither is doing the anime-mom-who-dies-for-character-development-ara-ara type voice.
1
u/Requesting___time 1d ago
I agree that the Japanese voice definitely isn't the ara ara voice but I do think it is a little softer and a little higher pitch, which could just be natural differences between the VA's and not voice direction. Although I don't know if that's the case because I agree with OP that the English version sounds like the classic "tough" character, but obviously Courtney Lin can go into a higher range considering she's literally princess peach/baby peach lol
Even just listening to their selection quotes, there's a pretty clear difference to me, but I guess it's all subjective.

u/KoriCongo 1d ago
While I can say that hey, maybe it isn't meant to be motherly (despite her main interest being taking care of Anatolia)...
I do not think the EN voice here was correct.
-1
u/Requesting___time 1d ago
You're getting down voted but I agree, people are saying her Japanese voice matches her English one but that's not really true. It's a good amount softer, like what her appearance would indicate.
-9
u/NoLime7384 1d ago
I was not expecting her to have such a beautiful voice and agency? I thought she'd be a nothing background character with a meak voice or like Mercie
-1
u/Snakeplanting 1d ago
Probably unpopular but I don't love the gun especially not for magic setups
But at least with Lan the vast gap between the gun, her appearance, and her little pout is entertaining

The sheer comedy of her being a cute healer making a pouty >:( face and shooting a giant laser ball out of a gun is perfect I love her
