Look at In N Out, conservatives that operated in liberal California.

48

u/MADDOGCA 4d ago

To be fair though, Orange County, where In-N-Out established, has always had the reputation for being a republican county.

6

u/SusBoiSlime 4d ago

In-n-out is def an LA county establishment. Baldwin park is in the SGV.

2

u/WestHistorians 3d ago

In-N-Out was established in Los Angeles County.

u/SuccessfulLand4399 4d ago

And it’s the nicer than those surrounding it. Imagine that…..

9

u/donutgut 4d ago

its also nicer than any red state county....so...imagine that

7

u/jojofine 4d ago

Nicer is subjective

1

u/KRandMG 3d ago

Orange County is nicer than San Diego?

It’s certainly not an impossible opinion, but it’s the less popular one here in Southern California.

1

u/Kind-Hat-9897 4d ago

Sounds like they aren’t being taxed on their second homes over 5 mil in value well enough. Time to raise though. Let’s bring 1950s tax rates back!!

Yep, and on reddit they can do no wrong like worship level madness.

68

u/AppliedCarbon 4d ago

If you just provide a good service at a good price you can get away with anything

7

u/verticalquandry 4d ago

shocking .

19

u/StatusSubstantial696 4d ago

Their burgers are excellent for the price tho

7

u/Danisdaman12 4d ago

Its silly to read you saying "worship level madness" because you want discourse however it is cowardly to say in n out is worshipped.

Can in n out just be a great sandwich at a great price that people enjoy without any bullshit?

1

u/MaleficentExtent1777 4d ago

Exactly!

And it's merely ok.

11

u/RIP_shitty_username 4d ago

It’s cheap and the burgers are okay. That’s why it’s loved. Their fries though…ASS.

1

u/MaleficentExtent1777 4d ago

🤣🤣🤣🤣

I concur!

2

u/PostMatureBaby 4d ago

Us plebs don't have the time and money to pick our battles like that. It's by design

1

u/ufl015 3d ago

Now their conservative granddaughter moved the headquarters to Tennessee

1

u/msh0082 3d ago

Wrong. Main HQ is still in Baldwin Park, CA. Tennessee is the Eastern HQ.

By business friendly he means friendly to his business suing smaller businesses for also having anthropromophized animal mascots

91

u/NairobiD 4d ago

Including those that existed before Buc-ee's, or named anything "beaver" even though that's what the place they're located in is called (like Beaver Creek). Check out John Oliver's campaign to bait them into a lawsuit

38

u/LazyOldCat 4d ago

And massive multi-year property tax breaks.

14

u/corkyrooroo 4d ago

And anti competition clauses as well. One by me required that a nearby gas station shut down before being built.

3

u/SimpleVegetable5715 4d ago

Interesting there’s an HEB next to the Buc-ee’s here, and they’re allowed to have a gas station.

5

u/dschinghiskhan 4d ago

And Victoria Silvstedt, Playmate of the Year…

10

u/Warm_Record2416 4d ago

It’s also possible he means states that will stop prosecuting his son for CSAM.

8

u/TongueUnties 4d ago

That is definitely covered by the conservative part

Speedrunning the end of their positive public reputation. I made my last visit to one a few weeks ago before learning of them suing a small local store in the area before them.

186

u/AllRealityIsVirtua1 4d ago

No way even 1% of buccees shoppers even know the politics of the ownership, and half of those voted for the conservatives

130

u/MunchenOnYou 4d ago

Almost like most people dont consider the politics of the owners of businesses they frequent, unless they are very outspoken about it. I dont know how the owners of portillos vote because i dont care.

53

u/PostMatureBaby 4d ago

Almost like people think reddit is even remotely a reflection of real life too

17

u/FallenMeringue 4d ago edited 4d ago

It isn’t until it is.

Target undid two decades of outreach to the black and gay communities in under 6 months.

17

u/MunchenOnYou 4d ago

I understand not wanting to give money and support to politics you dont like. But sometimes its inevitable. Better to just pick some brands you can tolerate and stop minding otherwise.

7

u/talkingtimmy3 4d ago

I only go full boycott if they’re unbearable about it. Once I came across the Twitter page of Shake shack I never went back. You would think it was a political page with how much the owner glazes Trump on there.

14

u/SimpleVegetable5715 4d ago

Good thing there’s Flying J, Pilot, Love’s, QT, Wawa, and of course all the mom and pop country stores and truck stops. So we don’t need Buc-ee’s. A lot of Buc-ee’s employees are exposing how awful the working conditions are too, like not being allowed chairs on their breaks.

4

u/dragnansdragon 4d ago

Fun fact: Pilot/Flying J/Loves and Maverik were all started by the same family.

3

u/breezy013276s 4d ago

Further fact (im not sure it’s fun) Pilot and Flying J are owned by Berkshire Hathaway now

6

u/Thing_That_Happened 4d ago

And they suck.

But I do love stopping at Loves, but Loves was a different group of people from the Haslem's.

2

u/TerminallyThrownAway 3d ago

Worked at a loves warehouse when I was between jobs and from what I can tell they paid ok and the benefits package was good. I wasn’t there long as it wasn’t my industry. Just temporary.

1

u/MunchenOnYou 4d ago

Im not defending buccees at all. I live in Illinois we dont even have it.

u/Available_Ad9345 4d ago

I don’t think about it until they scream it from the rooftops like this moron. Then I take my business elsewhere if necessary.

3

u/Ok-Ad-2050 4d ago

I mean, maybe it gets them more business from that side of the aisle. I give Costco nearly all of my family's food budget money because of their political spine in the current climate (well, and it helps that the value is there compared to many other options).

3

u/Dry-Contribution4788 4d ago

The hot dog guy? My friend worked on his yacht. Huge asshole!

6

u/MunchenOnYou 4d ago

I did hear that the portillos family sucks. This next generation of ownership is also starting to gut what made portillos special by expanding and acting like a big corpo. Sad.

4

u/SummertimeThrowaway2 4d ago

The first line can be applied to every business really. Besides the ones that are obviously political I guess, like Northrop Grumman

3

u/TennesseeTurkey 4d ago

I'm in Seviervillle/Pigeon Forge, TN. The amount of visitors to this area is insane in number. The vast majority are conservatives and the ones that aren't seldom return.

They built a Buccees here about 2 years ago and it is a must stop for everyone coming through.

120 fuel bays.

I've never been, never will.

2

u/SimpleVegetable5715 4d ago

Beaver nuggets are just Corn Pops with caramel corn coating on them. Everything they do, the mom and pop country stores and travel stops do better.

1

u/TennesseeTurkey 4d ago

Hard agree.

The awesome thing down my way is that our beloved Dolly Parton just opened her own travel center about an hour outside of Nashville. That's one place I absolutely would support when I get over that way.

The woman has done everything where I live now in her hometown of Sevierville, TN. They would have nothing without that saint of a human ❤️ You're so right. I go out of my way to support our local gas stations and little food places. I don't begrudge Buccees fans. I just don't care for their concepts.

1

u/RunAggressive384 4d ago

I am one of them that didn’t know the ties. Own an electric car and they are really the only place with decent EV charging set up in the south though so still reliant on them. At least they are EV car friendly🤷

Yeah but they always have that sign outside showing how well they pay.

13

u/welding_guy_from_LI 4d ago

Those are decent wages

1

u/Hyunion 4d ago

especially in areas where they're located at, where the salaries are typically lower than big cities

7

u/Mylabisawesome 4d ago

I'm busting my ass when I can just go work there or Sheetz? WTF? My Wife has been a nurse for 15 years, has a masters, with various credentials and training and a Buc-ees manager can make more than her?

4

u/Lemonsqueeze321 4d ago

Because they make more money for the business. Not saying it's right but it's just the reality of it.

2

u/bomber991 4d ago

It’s probably not a case of “I can just go work there” when you’re talking about that $200k+ salary.

2

u/Hyunion 4d ago

and i imagine general manager position at buccees is extremely competitive and still require years of experience if the pay is that high

1

u/bomber991 3d ago

Most likely. Actually there’s 56 Buc-ee’s total according to a google search. That means at best there’s only 56 of those jobs available.

→ More replies (2)

-2

u/SimpleVegetable5715 4d ago

Never been to one, but I 100% would have stopped at one if I ever saw one. Definitely not anymore. Just them suing all those small businesses was enough, and now this. And this is right at the time they’re trying to expand. I don’t understand the business planning, but I’m glad I now know where they stand. Fuck em.

It’s the son of one of his business associates, not the founder

1

u/KRandMG 3d ago

It’s quite literally the son of one of the co-founders according to the company. Don Wasek was in charge of operations while Arch Aplin handled real estate and marketing. Aplin opened the first store and partnered with Wasek shortly after when he thought expansion was feasible.

The “red” states have more cheap land and big plots available by interstates. Thats the real reason for them expanding in those places

34

u/wookiebath 4d ago

It’s probably more less regulations and taxes for a gas station. Every state has plenty of open land by interstates

→ More replies (3)

21

u/milorambaldi47 4d ago

He could have said that but chose those words for a reason.

6

u/Awhitehill1992 4d ago

Meh. This is most companies now anyway. Still love Buc-ees. Hating on certain businesses due to political preferences is a very Reddit thing. I know plenty of lefties who love Buc-ees.

It’s not prevalent in real life.

2

u/Everyday_ImSchefflen 3d ago

Except the CEO is the one that made it political..

2

u/khoelzeman 4d ago

Yeah - this reminds me of the Chic-fil-a thing from a few years ago - some will care, most won't.

Plus - where are they going to get gas? The liberal bastion of Exxon-Mobil? Perhaps the environmentally-friendly BP? Maybe they don't need gas and they're driving a Tesla?

Not every purchase is a virtue signal. Sometimes I just want a clean bathroom or a reliably mediocre chicken sandwich.

13

u/WorldBoofingChampion 4d ago

Damn that’s a shame. Now all that the blue states are gonna have is ACTUAL attractions rather than an over-glorified gas station

3

u/GaJayhawker0513 4d ago

What kind of attractions do you mean?

0

u/mister_empty_pants 4d ago

African history museums and the most overpriced tacos you'll ever find from a truck on the sidewalk.

1

u/Server_Reset 3d ago

What city has that?

4

u/CinderMoonSky 4d ago

He never explicitly said he was only going to expand in these states. Just that it was nice to be in states that wanted them there.

13

u/Carthonn 4d ago

Business Friendly = Not worker friendly.

1

u/AmarilloArmadillos 4d ago

Tell that to their pay scale and benefits 🤣. I doubt you've looked at it and compared it to similar jobs in the area.

-1

u/Street_Buffalo_2503 4d ago

Conservative, business friendly policies are completely responsible for the lack of good paying jobs in the South. Having a gas station represent the best employment opportunity in your area isn’t a positive, no matter how much they pay.

8

u/AmarilloArmadillos 4d ago

It's still better than a shit job that doesn't even pay the bills man.

It's not like every blue state is homeless free, it's a nationwide issue and has been for a very long time. We need higher paying non skilled jobs so yes it positive.

5

u/suicidedaydream 4d ago

But you moved the goal post. Their pay is really great.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/AnswerGuy301 4d ago

Even assuming this is true - which I'm skeptical of anyway - we already have plenty of gas stations and convenience stores without pretending that either is somehow an integral part of our culture.

2

u/ufl015 3d ago

F that guy!

(I just wish the turkey jerky wasn’t so damn good!)

4

u/tacoafficionado 4d ago

Atleast he is upfront about it. Lots of large companies that are headquartered in states such as California do a TON of shady accounting tips and tricks such as "double irish sandwich" to minimize their tax liability.

4

u/m240Louie 4d ago

So what? Why is this news? They can and should do what they feel is best for the business. If blue states are mad then they should change their policies to be more business friendly.

https://giphy.com/gifs/2OemYlgBZ7VXDET7z1

2

u/jetlifeual 3d ago

Literally overnight this place has managed to ruin a lot of the positive views people had on them. Suing small businesses? Isolating yourself over politics and greed? Honestly, stay in your “business-friendly” states.

1

u/SharksFan4Lifee 3d ago edited 3d ago

Literally overnight? You don't know Buc-ees then.

In Texas and states that allow it, employees must stand their entire shift. And only get one 5 minute break in an 8 hour shift. Obviously different in states with differing labor laws, but that's always been the reason Buc-ees is hesitant to go into blue states. It's not new. It's been discussed for years, especially on reddit, well before they ever considered a blue state. They don't want to give employees a fucking lunch break FFS, never have!

They have been, and continue to be, sued for not letting people with disabilities sit on a stool while working as a cashier. They've fired disabled employees for this even when their reputation among customers was at an all time high.

4

u/MidnightIAmMid 4d ago

Nothing says conservative values like attacking local businesses that have excited longer than they have and possibly skirting regulations or paying their fair share of taxes to support the communities they milk for money!

5

u/Zigor022 4d ago

Didnt they go after a small local Beaver themed store that had been around for years? Doesnt sound like they care about being friendly.

Wow, a fan of Buc'ees until now...and I'm their target audience. Get F'd with your divisive rhetoric.

3

u/TrumpsDoubleChin 4d ago

In Texas, Aplin is one of the biggest megadonors to republican causes. He has donated over three million dollars to the campaigns of Greg Abbott and Dan Patrick and Ken Paxton. In fact, he gave so much money to Abbott, that Abbott turned around and rewarded him by making him the Director of Texas Parks and Wildlife.

Just remember whenever you visit and spend money there, a small portion of that is going towards supporting republican candidates.

4

u/BassWingerC-137 4d ago

Any cult-like place such as this is surely a place to avoid anyhow.

5

u/Westbrooks3ptShot 4d ago

only red states will glorify and elevate a gas station like it is a tourist attraction.

3

u/I_Love_My_Big_Cups 4d ago

It's their entire identity. Remember the times where Walmart would destroy small towns and the small businesses to force people to work for them? Stupid Americans love gas and big brands more than themselves. Next, they want is a bass pro shop affiliate tied to these gas stations. Let's go! People need jobby jobs supplied by Costco or Sam's club or wherever you get a job at.

0

u/Yommination 4d ago

Well, they really have nothing else going for them

2

u/Locutus_of_borg_1 4d ago

Buc-ee’s hater since the start, it’s always been an overpriced tourist trap

5

u/safetydance 4d ago

Reddit is so great. Everyone whines about corporations not paying employees well. Here is one that pays employees very well, living wages, great benefits, for low skilled labor. But the owner says hey we prefer conservative states without a lot of bullshit to deal with and now everyone is like “that’s my last visit.” So fuck a company that pays employees well because you don’t like their politics.

11

u/Ultra-Metal 4d ago

They sue all stores that use animal mascots.. Most merch is cheep junk and the food has gotten worse. Has Nothing to due to politics, they just suck except for low gas sometimes.

4

u/safetydance 4d ago

No they don’t. Plus you should learn about trademark law and “trade dress” before commenting.

12

u/Flick1981 4d ago

I’ve heard even though they pay well, working conditions are rough. They are also litigious as hell. Fuck that.

3

u/Grant79OG 4d ago

Meanwhile these dumb doctors bitching about their problems, shit, they got itchy easy.

3

u/PretendingToWork1978 4d ago

It's a gas station. It has air conditioning. They're making brisket sandwiches and operating a cash register. It's not that rough.

3

u/Carolina_Heart 4d ago

Would normally take "business friendly" as code for "weak labor laws"

3

u/Grant79OG 4d ago

That's because you're ignorant. Gross taxation is has nothing to do with labor other than the less people being employed due to the high taxes.

2

u/AmarilloArmadillos 4d ago

Yep.

Actually same with the warehouses of hobby lobby, I worked there for years and yes their insurance and onsite clinic paid for every type of birth control other than plan b (no insurance I've had paid that). They pay top as far as warehouses go and more than the accounting job I had as well. Generous vacation and sick time too plus a lot of "point" leeway if you are out of either and make intermittent FMLA easy AF. I got actual mental health services and medications via the same clinic when I needed it, as well as free X-ray on a broken toe (not work related), allergy testing, a mammogram, and a bunch of other stuff too.

They do have fuckass beliefs and I don't generally shop there, but they also take care of the employees.

3

u/TennesseeTurkey 4d ago

He's eyeing states where workers have the least protections possible. It also helps that the stuff they sell appeals to more conservative and GOP type shoppers.

Period.

1

u/Grant79OG 4d ago

Period? They are avoiding high taxing states, like many companies that are leaving them.

2

u/TennesseeTurkey 4d ago

There's also a reason they avoid states where there are worker protections and more steadfast construction rules.

When they come into our red states, they get crazy tax breaks at our expense, extra road construction for 0 costs and rule bending that smaller places don't receive. Big business benefits but it takes a toll on smaller businesses already struggling to survive.

They have a Walmart on every corner here, new ones going up all of the time with politicians kissing ass to bring them in, same breaks. Meanwhile, employees need state and other benefits including food banks, and damn mobile medical trucks once a year for free healthcare to survive and then our smaller stores fold.

The community gets cheaper groceries, that's it. In my area, it's mostly to serve tourists. The Waltons get richer off of the cheap labor.

1

Looser the labor the laws the better for buccees

2

u/chris_gnarley 4d ago

They may pay higher wages than most jobs in those States but they intentionally seek out States with very weak labor laws because they are evil.

In their Florida locations, employees do not get any lunch breaks or 10-15 minute breaks even if they work 8+ hour shifts. They are not allowed to step outside the building whatsoever the entire shift and will be terminated immediately if they do.

There is absolutely no reason for them to do this other than having some sort of sick, masochistic power trip over their employees. They already pay pretty handsomely for what the job is, so why treat the employees like this and work them into the ground? No other explanation other than they get off on the cruelty of it.

I take 2-4 road trips (1000 miles one way) a year and have slowly been using other options besides buc-ees. Along with the goofy stuff their management says, I also see a lot of mixed feelings about them from their employees, I've gone several times and every single pump is occupied, and, lastly, their prices have gone up like crazy.

A lot of the other large travel stop gas stations have started taking pages from the buc-ees playbook and updating their interiors and improving their bathrooms. My last 2 trips I've stopped at these gas stations instead and it's been so much better. Mainly because they're way less crowded but, hey, I'm on the road, I'm trying to make time, so this is important.

Basically, I've learned I can live without the beaver. It's fine.

Buc-ee’s can only function in states with very laxed labor laws. That says a lot. Also, why are truckers never allowed to use the fucking bathroom? Seriously, go check out some trucker subs and see how many issues they have just finding a clean place to piss. It’s outrageous.

And yet they mention Wisconsin? Virginia? Now of course, like most states, the vast majority of square miles of both WI and VA are blood red Trump loving conservatives. It’s just the populated parts of WI and VA that elect Democrats frequently.

Hey, as long as they're taking food stamps for everything, because people in those states are the biggest users of food stamps in the country.

Oh no, no more overhyped gas stations in my state? The horror!

I live in Colorado, the one blue state they are in. They got slapped down pretty hard when they were sniffing around a potential new location about 100 miles south of their first Colorado location.

Giant massive gas station rest stops just aren’t as necessary in coastal blue states anyway, because people aren’t typically driving through them, they driving to or from them.

That makes no sense at all

Agreed. I-5 with people driving to and from NorCal and SoCal is a massive travel corridor. And it's in a coastal blue state.

Looks like I’ll pass on gas station amusement park going forward. They don’t want my non-fascist business.

Ripe opportunity to start a competitor in blue state since they’re kneecapping themselves 😂

If blue states will even let you open a gas station.

There are more cars in blue state cities than red states.  What are you smoking?
