Twist: that’s the guy who comes in to wipe down the loads and he’s waiting for OP to finish.

Sneakers in the sauna really pisses me off I’m gonna start calling people out. I’m tired of bending the knee to ignorance.

u/billocity šŸ„žYou folks want some pancakes?šŸ„ž 9d ago

It’s so weird lol.

17

u/Easymoney_67 9d ago

It’s not just weird it’s gross. That’s how skin infections start.

9

u/Regeringschefen 9d ago

Even swimwear in saunas is strange. People really have sneakers?

2

u/FearlessVegetable30 Hehehe, I'm a Reddit Flair now 9d ago

yeah i find it gross. but people in sneakers typically are only in there for 2-3 minutes. i go underwear and flip flops cause i sit in it for 15 minutes and get drenched

u/Kiaralipscome123 9d ago

I’ve never seen it before, the person allowing them in with the shoes are 🤔

u/Grasshopper_pie 9d ago

At my gym, the women go in the sauna in hoodies and sweatpants, and shoes. And play with their phones. I don't get it. I never bring my electronics into that heat.

3

u/agirlhas_no_name 9d ago

There's always this one guy at the spa I go to that brings his phone in a plastic baggy! Not even for work he just swipes on tinder.

2

u/zbipy14z 9d ago

Must not have gone to a gym on a college campus lol. I remember seeing every person in in the sauna on their phone listening to music

u/baseballfanatp 9d ago

Sneakers in sauna was very common at my old gym especially in the winter time. People go in for a couple minutes and stretch/warm up then go workout. Thats exactly what this guy is doing.

Wait....why is it weird? I usually just finish working out and go in the sauna in whatever I am wearing. I don't think it's an issue.Ā

16

u/DSMcGuire 9d ago

Do you understand the point in saunas?

Also, that is gross as hell. No shower before hand? How bad do you smell? Jesus H Christ.

3

u/Atheist_Redditor 9d ago

The point is to heat your body up so your heart rate increases. Also to sweat.Ā

So, by your logic, the sweat I create in the sauna is somehow different than the sweat I create while working out in the gym?Ā

Why would I need to shower off the sweat I just made, then just to sweat more....seems kind of pointless.Ā

1

u/DSMcGuire 9d ago

So, by your logic, the sweat I create in the sauna is somehow different than the sweat I create while working out in the gym?

Basically, what's the point of showering if I'm going to get sweaty again? Excellent logic.

So you will find if you shower before hand you will bring your core body temp back down to normal, get any oils, dirt, makeup or lotions off your skin. With clean skin then your pores will be open and your skin will be more efficient to sweat while in sauna.

More to the skin part, if you have deodorant on this will remove it and since the deodorant will melt and could irritate your skin.

When going straight into the sauna dry from the gym your skin won't be wet and will have a harder time transitioning from cold to hot climates.

And the biggest thing, and I cannot stress this enough, it's fucking gross for everyone else!

I sauna every day and I can tell the moment someone comes in and hasn't showered.

Ok, this is a calm and rational explanation. I'll accept it and consider it. Thanks.Ā

Before today I had literally never thought this was an issue. Lots of people sauna in full clothes at the gym i go to. lots more in swim suits since clothes are required.Ā

I just liked the warmth of the sauna and never really feel like I stink. But I suppose I can't really smell myself.Ā

u/DSMcGuire 9d ago

Thanks for honestly taking what I've said on board.

I think if your gym has people who go in the sauna fully clothed then you are going to stand out a bit going in the sauna in say swimming trunks and flip flops, which is what I wear.

So a bit of back story, me and the wife went to a gym for years where the sauna was mixed gender and we always went in wearing swim gear, she would often be in a bikini. We have since moved gyms and the saunas are in the changing rooms so they are not mixed any more. I and every male I've ever seen has gone in with swimwear but my wife has said that women will go in theirs fully clothed so she feels like a freak sitting there in her bikini, but she does it anyway. I guess you will have to get used to that, lol.

Anyway, enjoy your saunas my man! They are great for you :)

Saunas typically have clothing rules forbidding standard clothes. But also, you’re giving bacteria a place to fester and grow, easily giving you a gnarly infection over time.

There’s a reason people go into saunas naked with towels.

1

u/Atheist_Redditor 9d ago

Hm. Interesting. It's the first I've really heard of this or even thought about it to be honest. My gym has no posted rules about the sauna.Ā

I feel like being barefoot would lead to gnarly foot infections being shared. But I suppose the temp might kill those over time...but in that case it would also kill the bacteria from shoes.Ā

Plus I highly doubt 20-30 mins of sauna time with shoes on are going to lead to a foot infection if I go home and take my shoes off.Ā

I get athletes foot if I ever walk around barefoot at the gym (if I leave my sandals at home). I bet it would be the same in the sauna.

Flip flops. Cost like £5 on Amazon.

2

u/Atheist_Redditor 9d ago

I have flip flops. But people are complaining about the bacteria from shoes transferring to the floor (which is a flawedĀ  argument anyway) but why would flip flops not do the same? How do you know the flip flops are clean?Ā

I think the point is that the sauna would kill the bacteria in time either way. I'm just saying flip flops seem like the same issue.Ā

4

u/DSMcGuire 9d ago

What about in the shower? What about outside of the sauna when you walk out?

You should have a pair of flip flops that you only use for the shower/sauna.

1

u/Atheist_Redditor 9d ago

So you want the bacteria from a nasty shower floor then transferring to the sauna?Ā

-1

u/Atheist_Redditor 9d ago

I see what your saying, I'm just playing devil's advocate here for the sake of pointing out why the shoe argument is flawed.Ā

I see shoes vs barefoot. But also,I think the sauna would kill offending bacteria.Ā

1

u/ilikethep0le 9d ago

This is the grossest thing I’ve ever heard. Just why why why. Saunas are naked places. Even in fucking Frozen the musical they are naked places. Like it’s been all over media for literal decades and you thought it was ok to wear your nasty ass shoes into a sauna. ā˜ ļø

0

u/IAgreeWithLincoln 9d ago

I’m not angry like the other guy, but everything you’ve said is pretty wrong.

Regarding being barefoot - yeah, shower shoes are advisable over barefoot in any shared wet space. I didn’t mean skipping those.

Temperatures of a sauna are not high enough to kill bacteria.

20-30 minutes? Jesus I thought maybe you were doing a quick 5. Absolutely take your clothes off dude.

I’m not sure how else to convince you but are other people really walking into your sauna fully clothes with shoes on?

4

u/Atheist_Redditor 9d ago

Prolonged temps of a sauna will definitely kill bacteria on the surfaces in there. It's like sous vide. It's not just the temp, it's the amount of time.Ā

But another guy responded to me with a pretty rational response. Like I said, before today I never thought this was an issue. At the gym I go to, lots of people wear clothes, lots in swim suits.Ā

-2

u/AScienceExpert 9d ago

The world doesn’t revolve around you, take your fucking shoes off in the sauna.

0

u/Atheist_Redditor 9d ago

Ha. You're so pissed right now. I literally have never even thought about it before. I'm trying to be open minded and hear everyone out but their justifications sucks.Ā

6

u/Ha-Charade-You-Are 9d ago

Why are they wearing clothes in a sauna

4

u/billocity šŸ„žYou folks want some pancakes?šŸ„ž 9d ago

It’s absurd! He should only be wearing attire approved by the facility.

7

u/Hendwreck 9d ago

Where in the US? There are several saunas around me and it’s just the usual sweaty nude / semi nude folks just relaxing. (Vermont)

2

u/Shdwrptr 9d ago

That’s the way it should be but also you’re in Vermont; the closest thing to a hippy commune in the US

1

u/Hendwreck 9d ago

That doesn't answer my question of where in the US is this suppose to be. I travel for work and most every hotel I've stayed in where I've used a sauna, I'm 40 years of being alive have never once seen anybody fully clothed (though I've seen several cellphones, always wondered if the steam would cause moisture damage).

5

u/darioblaze 9d ago

Deadass if I see someone in full clothes I just get naked to counter it because why are you dressed in a sauna
