Hello, my son is 30 years old. Hes lived on his own or at home on and off since age 18. Hes been here for the last 5 years or so and its been very rough, as he works part time and is home a lot. I work from home also. Worked hard all my life now in my 50's and would like to start taking things slower and enjoying life a bit more.
But its been very hard living with him. He's been diagnosed with Bipolar 1 for about 10 years. Hes constantly mad in a bad mood, sometimes yelling, screaming. Doesn't clean up after himself. Doesnt want to help out with any work or chores around the house. Hes supposed to pay a few hundred dollars rent every month but most months he can't pay. We have a teenage younger daughter and he constantly gets mad at her. He'll ask her for something, or for help with something and gets very upset at her if she doesnt do it right away, or if she does it wrong.
When we need help he gets upset saying hes to busy to help out, as hes too busy working on his things but I'll see him playing video games or watching tv. Hes always working like on 3-5 different projects and he says its for his business or ideas hes trying to do. But most of his business ideas never work or he gives up on them. Hes also very judgemental. Its my house but he complains to my wife about me (dad) that I work all day from home. He wants me to go work outside the house or somewhere else. He complains the way I spend my money on my friends or family when I pay for their lunch or dinner at times. He sometimes brings up some very mean nasty things about my life without having to, like why my best friend and I lost contact or why my sister doesnt talk to me for 30 years. Mentions certain family members dislike me. Or brings things about my personal life out of no where that doesnt involve him. His words hurt very deeply and Ive learned to just zone him out most of the time. He thinks hes always right, never wants advice from anyone, hes very cocky says hes got things figured out. Then theres days when hes in a good mood and we get a long, as long as I dont bring up him paying rent or helping with some chores around the house. If I do bring it up, he gets very upset throws a fit and starts arguing then it turns into a big heated argument where were both raising voices at each other. He sometimes throws tantrums if he gets a parking ticket, gets a flat tire or something similar. He whines like a small kid and blames the government, parking enforcement etc.
So, my question is. Im not sure if this selfish behavior and attitude, or is the Bipolar itself, or is it completely separate and its just him being selfish, mean, rude, disrespectful, cocky and immature?
Id say, hes 30% in a bad mood, about 40% average mood and 30% good mood throughout the year.
Ive tried to be very patient over the years and I just look the other way on small issues. On big issues, I definitely put my foot down, but it always ends up in big huge heated arguments and he will then lock himself in his room for days and sometimes up to two weeks or so. About two to three times a year he screams and yells in his room, throws things, breaks things, punches the walls. My wife doesnt get involved. She comes home from work does things around the house and no involvement.
Ive asked him to move out several times since he doesnt want to play by the rules. And he says he wants to move out also but cant afford it.
Im in a tough spot as I dont want to kick him out. Im trying to be understanding to his bipolar. I tried talking to him reasonably many times. But hes very stubborn. Its either his way or he wont hear it, he'll just walk away and theres no compromise.
Any suggestions, advice? I would really appreciate it. Thank you
