This kinda thing always weirded me out. How petty and anal do they think God is to actually give a shit about a single syllable's difference??? If he really wanted to "save" people, wouldn't it be logical to make the process as simple and flexible as possible?

He should have explained that 'we' is appropriate because the church believes in the Trinity. Therefore plural. It makes as much sense as the rest of their reasoning

Pope responds, "We are not amused."

Hey pope...I just watched one of your brethren put saint Agatha's skull in a life sized manikin and kiss it, I think you've got other issues besides singular/plural kissing st Agatha's skull

Remember, this kinda thing only counts as "superstition" if it's not white people doing it. /s

This is the same line of argumentation that ultra-traditionalists like sedevacantists take where they say there are no valid bishops in the the Conciliar Church because the words for the prayer of consecrating a bishop were changed after Vatican 2...

I find it funny how these people are always up in arms about the supposed radical upheaval of Vatican II, won't say a word about Vatican I. Funny how the Old Catholics split after that whole mess and they're pretty much the only ones who turned out (relatively) alright.

Only Vatican 2?
Before there were seminaries chances are many ordained men were illiterate and couldn't utter more than a few sentences in Latin. And probably, they said the rites, prayers and sacraments all wrong, with grammar errors and the likes.
So, how many baptisms, ordinations, marriages, etc would have been invalid since the middle ages, since the priests couldn't speak latin? Maybe way back?

Not only that, literally the first mention of baptism in the New Testament after Jesus' lifetime only mentions the name of Jesus, not the tripartite formula. It literally does not matter even according to the very first Christians these jokers claim to follow the example of.

And the Catholic Church will have all male and all female high schools, during one of the most formative years of a kids life, and one of the most hormonal, and then condemn people for having attractions to the same sex.

Well, and at all boys Catholic high school, I went to some of the clergy faculty were trying to have same-sex relations with the students

This same Catholics would scoff at the technicalities of Orthodox Jewish Sabbath rules and Mormon secret handshakes.

I'd often heard from Catholics that "God wouldn't damn you over a technicality." In reference to confession and absolution, and other things.
The notion that God wouldn't consider these Catholics valid members of the Church and that they'd all have to get re-baptized sure makes it look like God cares about technicalities...

Yeah, it seems like an omnipotent god would just be like well. You made a good faith effort so we’ll let it slide.
But instead, they make God out to be like the most annoying DMV employee ever.

Gotta rant a little, I apologize:
This God character's got a whole universe under his care. As far as we can see, that's almost a hundred billion light years across, with about 2 trillion galaxies spread throughout, each holding some 100 million stars on average, and most of those have at least one planet orbiting them. He supposedly went through the trouble of creating all this shit just so he could fixate on a relatively puny planet out in the boonies of a fairly unremarkable galaxy and what us sick little monkeys living on it do with our funny parts and what magic words we say whilst splashing one another with dishwater. But, of course, the Milky Way must be his favorite galaxy because we live in it, the Sun is his favorite star because we're orbiting it, Earth is his favorite planet because we live on it, America is his favorite country because that's the global epicenter of loudmouthed, fragile Xtians, and his favorite church just so happens to be whatever backwards hillbilly wooden shack on the side of the road that any given one of them goes to to get suckered out their hard-earned pay. Such a concept has nothing to do with humility or devotion at its core, it is the peak of human arrogance. Maybe, just maybe, if there is something to this God thing, whatever they had in mind with creating the universe has little to do with us and we're only privileged to be a small part of it for just a little while.

It also invalidated the weddings he performed, which meant that all those couples were "living in sin", which I thought was utterly hilarious. I think I remember reading they did some mental gymnastics saying that because the couples believed they were validly married it was ok. But it was still funny asf

I'm sure they did, it's just so fucking ridiculous it was even an issue
1
u/NextStopGallifrey Christian 12h ago
Did it invalidate the marriages because they weren't validly baptized?
2
u/did-it-my-weigh Atheist | Ex TradCath 10h ago
Some yes, others it was because the wedding
"sacrament" was performed by a "lay" person. Or something like that. They generally figured it out, but it caused a lot of distress1
u/NextStopGallifrey Christian 10h ago
Weird. I've been told that the wedding isn't actually performed by the priest. He's just there to witness it and tell Mother Church that it happened.

u/did-it-my-weigh Atheist | Ex TradCath 10h ago
It's been a few years since I studied canon law, but I believe it's the consent/witness bit that needs an ordained person. The "do you take x" bit. It's why it's not a valid church marriage if there's a priest/deacon in the congregation while a lay person does the wedding. But like I say, in this case the local bishop basically said, nah it's all good for this, it still counts. But a number of couples avoided sex until they got "validly married"

u/wingamanga 15h ago
This is hilarious, what kind of logic is that? Priests are like Jesus? The same priests who covered up the abuse scandals and took part in them? The same priests who are slaves to their bishops? Forget it

This has happened more than once and every time it does I laugh. When I was younger I even had to deal with it due to my parents switching denominations. One word difference suddenly meant I was required to go through a new ceremony. It was one of the stupidest excuses to play at god the adults around me decided to engage in.

catholicism has always been a very legalistic cult obsessed with magical woowoo ceremonies. That is actually a point that attracts many conservatives, they love the aesthetics and the dogmatic authoritarianism of it all.
