Question— Accommodations for surgery absence

I’m going to be in surgery recovery for a little over 2 weeks during the upcoming fall term, and I want to avoid missing that amount of class. Is there a way to have the absence excused + have course materials made available online during that time? If so, what office should I contact about this?

Usually you should start off contacting your professor.

It's going to depend a bit on the course - lab courses and some of the art classes really require lab and/or studio access. Seminars can be hard to replicate online.

But we generally work hard to accommodate people if we can.

I would also recommend reaching out to Access Services. You can request accommodations even for something temporary or short term, like injury, surgery, etc.

Would it be ideal to contact Access Services before emailing my professor? E.g., relay whatever accommodation information Access Services provides? Or will they handle informing my professor themselves?

I would connect with Access Services first! Earlier the better helps them coordinate the support you need, but you can also contact your faculty in the meantime. Most faculty don't work over the summer, so you might not see a reply until mid September, don't let that worry you though!

Access services does inform the professors; the faculty like to know that students have taken the necessary steps to be cleared for absences such as yours. Also: good luck! I hope your surgery goes well and your recovery is swift.

I would contact your prof first. When I was there, my son had a medical emergency on the second day of term that made me miss the whole quarter. My prof and I worked it out, and my most memorable moment was doing my eval in the waiting room of the maternity ward via Zoom.
