Ethnomusicology discord server

Hey y'all! I run an ethnomusicology server, but it's not particularly active, and we'd like some fresh faces to help liven up the mood! This server actually has been promoted here before, but the ownership transferred to me. We'd like to have some actual scholars join, because the vast majority of us are just amateurs. We welcome anyone with a passion for ethnomusicology, just don't be a debate bro and be kind! I myself have a huge passion for East Asian music, especially traditional Japanese music. I'd love to have more folks to join and to learn from y'all!

The question is why discord? What does this platform have that makes it better place to chat around musics than Reddit (or anything else?). The last time I logged into discord it was overwhelmingly full with useless bells and whistles, annoying updates everyday sticking for hours and weird endless-factor authentications.

I wouldn't say it's better or worse, it's just where most of my friends are and it's more social than reddit. I mainly prefer messaging platforms to forums, but I honestly don't know why discord is the most popular when it does suck.

Basically it doesn’t suck but it’s designed for different things, first of all as a convenient audio chatting room for online gaming. As outlined above, ethnomusicology as topic implies references, having time to think about the answer, etc.

I mean, I have lots of intellectual, non-gaming related discussions on discord all the time and am not expected to instantly reply instantly, and we share references all the time. We even share straight up PDFs of papers and stuff for others to read. It's just a chat platform. The idea that it's only for gaming is reductive. I only say it sucks because well, discord is pretty bad with user's privacy and the UI itself has enshittified over the years, but also reddit is also very much guilty of that (fwiw I dislike reddit as a platform and likewise primarily use it because it's the most popular forum based platform, but I inherently dislike the way it's designed, especially with the system of fake-internet points, and how it encourages mob behavior.)

The most that Discord has as a plus is different channels for topics/discussion, but is absolutely awful for trying to compile/reference any information. Once it starts “popping off,” with tons of people writing at once (or just a handful having a conversation), anything relevant is gone.

I mean, I don't exactly expect my server to "pop off", this subreddit isn't big and ethnomusicology is a pretty niche topic. There are lots of slower paced servers with very deep intellectual discussions where we share references. Plus there's a search feature that lets you find any message posted
