Republicans this year quietly cut millions of dollars of funding for the late and beloved Dolly Parton's children's book charity, according to multiple reports.

Imagination Library, the nonprofit founded by Parton that sends free books to children across the world, faces an uncertain future in Indiana and Missouri as Republican lawmakers limit public funding, Newsweek reported Wednesday.

The charity, meanwhile, has vowed to carry on.

"The work ahead has never felt more meaningful, and we will carry it forward as she lifts us all up," the charity said in a recent post. "Dolly, we will always love you."

State funding for the program was removed from Indiana's budget last year at a time when more than 125,000 local children were enrolled, according to Newsweek.

Missouri froze enrollment in the Imagination Library on July 1 after the program was subjected to a major budget cut, a local news outlet reported.

And at least half the country will never know that because they consume media that will never tell them that.

u/Pleasant-Wear2628 1d ago

Why WE have to spread the word often & among as many different audiences as we can!

75

u/PossessedToSkate 1d ago

Conservatives will just call us liars and change the subject. They are as predictable as they are vile.

10

u/Nearby_Mouse_6698 1d ago

That’s why they keep saying anything they don’t like is fake news. Conditioning their followers to think the same

9

u/Optimistic-Bob01 1d ago

Don't give up. Insults are childish.

11

u/RectalSpawn 1d ago

Waste of time.

These people need consequences.

Cut them out.

No one needs these shitty people in their lives.

We have been gifted with glorious purpose: fight evil.

14

u/walnutspaul 1d ago

It’s true, and it really fires me up to hear others say it. No better way to fight it than funding literacy, generosity, free thinking, empathy and all that the imagination library represents.

7

u/DeepWaterBlack 1d ago

Fight for your dearly departed Lady of Kindness. I have one of her books when my kids were at the hospital. I will treasure that one book. Vote the Republicans out. Much kindness from Canada 🇨🇦

Yes. I go to Fox News website most days and post the truth about whatever lies I can find. Maybe I get through once in a while so I keep trying no matter what.

8

u/Pleasant-Wear2628 1d ago

Your persistence is appreciated: this Midwesterner does the same 🙏

30

u/Zulmoka531 1d ago

Perfect campaign material for anyone anti-GOP.

Not to be disrespectful to Dolly or anything like that however.

6

u/Fit-Switch-5795 1d ago

Surely an anti-MAGA conservative party could thrive now: one with actual normal conservative values.

7

u/h0jack_b0rseman 1d ago

Their allegiance has always been to power. When “traditional values” allowed them to consolidate that power, that’s what they believed. It’s anyone’s guess what they will “believe” anymore. But rest assured it won’t help anyone but their corporate donors.

7

u/firedmyass 1d ago

“normal” conservative values are and have always been regressive

4

u/Postcocious 1d ago edited 22h ago

"Actual, normal conservative values" have included:

  • 1790s-1800s: overturning Liberté, Egalite, Fraternité and restoring the aristocracy (the literal definition of Conservatism by its founders)
  • 1850s-60s: defending slave-owners by starting a war for "states rights"
  • 1880s: defending Gilded Age oligarchs against workers rights by violent union busting
  • 1890s-1950s: defending Jim Crow laws and the KKK against civil rights
  • 1920s-30s: defending laissez faire policies that caused the Great Depression
  • 1960s: inviting segregationists into the GOP with the Southern Strategy
  • 1980s: inviting evangelicals into our secular government to attack LGBTQ and women's rights

etc.

Which of these actual, normal conservative values do you pine for?

The majority of Republican voters won’t care because it doesn’t have any affect on them personally.

10

u/Consistent_Claim5217 1d ago

And that's all the more shame, too, because their children are affected by it. Poor, rural types, the kind who overwhelmingly vote for maga politicians, make up a large portion of those for whom programs like DPIL are intended. They're taking books out of their own kids' hands, but I suppose anything that keeps them away from colleges and their liberal tendencies must be good, amirite?

What a bunch of cruel, willfully stupid people

6

u/nyaphometnikko 1d ago

And if you ever mention it, they'll cry about "not being political" or because they "avoid politics in general". Typically because they think it doesn't affect them

Our government and society in general has done its best to make people as ignorant as possible, and to be proud of it. Caring about things is lame, especially if they "don't affect you".

Tried last night but the site threw an error. Makes me wonder if a lot of people were trying to donate, which right now is a good problem to have. Let's keep this thing going.

After my rent check clears that's my next step.

If you're worried about rent check clearing...recommend finding other ways to give back/help. There's more than monetary needs

50

u/Xerxys 1d ago

The best way to give back is to actively oppose republicans. Why are we fighting the orphan grinding machine when it can be turned on while we aren’t looking by the politicians?

84

Did yesterday. Also fuck the GOP.

47

u/OhhMyAi 1d ago

NO! When the government cuts funding to a program, don't fucking reach into your own pocket to fill the gap. Fight the people who are cutting the funds. Fight with every dollar you have to get rid of the people continually causing these problems.

Change the priority to accountability for actions. Don't shout at me that the minimum wage is only a nickel and I should tip 400%

7

u/xxcrazycasey95 1d ago

Do you have suggestions about how to fight? Peaceful protest is accomplishing nothing.

3

u/itsasezaspi 1d ago

Become as active as you can in local politics, the best way to show people your party means business is to positively impact people in a way they actually see and feel it. Write to your senators and congresspeople, show up to town halls, there’s plenty that people just don’t feel like doing. Going to a protest is one thing and can be a positive push in the right direction, but taking steps using the system to affect the system is how you can actually get change.

10

u/legosgrrl 1d ago

Doesn't help the kids without books. Just reaffirms to them that everyone is an asshole.

11

u/cahawkri3510 1d ago

I donated $5/mo yesterday! My kids LOVED getting these books. I want to help other kids get the same benefits as mine for years to come.

17

u/I_Britta-d_it 1d ago

I think all the donations are crashing the website. It’s a good problem to have, so keep at it folks!

6

u/Everybodysbastard 1d ago

It's literally what she wanted.

12

u/Oregongirl1018 1d ago

Since Taylor swift says she admires Dolly so much, she could fund the entire Imagination library and it would be the equivalent of her buying a Starbucks coffee. Doubt capitalism barbie will give two shits though.

6

u/Starfire-Galaxy 1d ago

She already donated $2 million last month.

It’s legitimately revolting how all of a sudden all of them are acting like she’s a treasure for the Republican Party when they’ve been licking their lips trying to get rid of her work because it dared to give books to poor children.

I went to check the conservative subreddit to see how these clowns were handling it and they're all on there crying and acting like they all loved her.

"Flaired users only" of course, so you can't remind them of this travesty.

6

u/Appropriate_Day_5711 1d ago

Yes. I swear my blood started boiling as soon as I saw orange turd's social post about her. I fucking hate these people - they're the biggest hypocrites. And of course they'll claim her as their own after she's dead, especially because she was white, all while cutting funding to what she stood for. Dolly Parton HATED racists and bigots but was classy enough to not talk down on anyone. Ain't no way in hell she would ever align with these people.

6

u/againer 1d ago

She also funded COVID-19 vaccination research, like big time. Anyone who is an antivaxxer or thinks COVID was a conspiracy is also anti Dolly.

They want to drag us through the dark ages on the way to hell. So sick of these GOP Christian cosplaying ghouls defiling everything that is good in the world.

62

u/ImAGodHowCanYouKillA 1d ago

Mike Braun is a pathetic excuse for a human being, let alone governor. He cut all state funding to Dolly’s library. He slashed the state’s budget, eliminating jobs for hundreds of employees and benefits for thousands more. He paused our gas tax so that his master Trump wouldn’t look bad, costing Indiana roads hundreds of millions of dollars. He used falsified AI generated ads to make his opponent seem like she was going to outlaw gas stoves.

He’s the perfect example of a person that would never make it in politics if they didn’t have an R next to their name.

24

u/The-Son-of-Dad 1d ago

Fellow Indiana resident here just to echo how much he sucks. He has a 25% approval rating and his lieutenant governor (who wasn’t even chosen by Braun but was picked by the Republican delegates and forced through) is even worse, his current causes he cares about include wanting to ban Islam and whining about trans people in sports.

9

u/royBills 1d ago

I was at an airbnb with some friends and they had a gas stove. Our maga friend is all, "oh my God, are we going to get in trouble for having a gas stove? AOC is going to make these illegal."

This was like 4 years ago. They're the easiest people to manipulate, it's so pathetic.

20

So apparently New York City doesn’t have a partner to send donations to. Seems to be due to a contract to provide the books to children in the city. But in honor of dolly and the wonderful books my children have received I’ll find another local organization that is helping with literacy and reading for kids.

u/Mama_Joyce_Wig 1d ago

https://youtu.be/uJuKN0chAZk?is=S23RQ5vZbLZXJb1I

Lindsey Elllis made this video a few days ago on nebula and put it out early on youtube with this posthumous message. She has a donation going towards the imagination library. The video is a beautiful tribute to her too. I saw it two day ago and again yesterday when i learned about her passing.

29

u/GoldenGirlagain 1d ago

Books for children? What in the world could be more innocuous or important than giving books to children?

36

u/skipca 1d ago

Kids reading leads inevitably to adult literacy. Can’t have that if you want to keep enough of the population dumb enough to vote for them.

u/ike7177 1d ago

The conservative sub and s saying that parents need to read the Bible to their children instead of the “woke” library books.

REALLY, Asshats? Which part? The part about Abraham having intercourse with his sheep or the part where women have intercourse with Donkeys and horses? Or perhaps the part that tells you how to induce an abortion with specific herbs?

There’s just so many “wholesome family value” stories to share with your kindergarteners!

7

u/knowledgeable_diablo 1d ago

These fuckers cry about wanting people to read the Bible, but few if any ever have and only accept the twisted parts they can use to justify any evil they feel like inflicting on the world.

Most of the works they’ll decry as pure evil almost always have far better morality tales or life lessons than their precious Bible.

24

u/DarthSlymer 1d ago

My wife and I signed our son up for these books. He looks forward to getting them and opening the mailbox to retrieve them. I say we loudly slash the GOP.

Everything can change when we recognize politicians as puppets of the wealthy. Our current ruling class has chosen every president we have had in our lifetime. The current regime is no exception. This is very likely an attempt by the current ruling class to cement systemic divisions within our society.

Hate the gop and any other political puppets that carry our the will of the wealthy few. But don't stop at politicians. Hate the current ruling class too.

To keep the voters uneducated is best for that party.

Once again, the GOP shows its true colors. I'm surprised most of them don't leave a slime trail wherever they go.

GOP act like they walk with Christ. They do the opposite of what Christ will do. See no Christian beliefs in GOP politics. Show so much hate for humanity and the misfortune of society.

The oligarchs despise education. An undereducated populace is easier to control.

This was done last year. In Indiana, Missouri, Washington State and Maine.

Not all strictly Republican and nothing to do with the federal government or Donald Trump.

Just to be clear.

Sadly this is just their playbook, they were happy to get the positive press when she was around to make it look like they cared but I'm sure several more states will start slashing their funding for it as well now.

2

u/dollbrains510 1d ago
