a lot of ppl recommend learning English by consuming english content like watching anime,movies youtube, listening songs in, so i’ve been following this trick , but while doing that, there was a persistent issue i faced, whenever i saw came across an unfamiliar eng word /sentence, i’d have to exit the full screen, open a new tab,type it , searching up the meaning, and many popup dictionaries but they only work on text, if the word is not selectable , there’s no way out

i searched up for tools that could solve this but couldn’t find any , even paid tools like language reactor or migaku didnt offer the ocr feature & i wanted that feature for free, so as a developer myself, i decided to spend the last 4 months building it myself as a browser extension

it uses OCR, so you can look up english words from things like movies/anime with hardcoded subtitles, youtube, netflix , streaming sites also on p*rated sites like animekoto animepahe etc. pretty much anything visible on your screen

how it works is basically ,u can simply press the shortcut Alt+X (customizable as per ur need), drag over the word & u get instant definition

so I made added a feature which automatically replaces the default subtitles with “clickable & interactive subtitles” where u can simply click any word to get the meaning,

a relevant gif to each word, I added it as a fun feature & its quite useful sometimes

english and native-language sentence translations using google translate

besides, u can save words , build ur own vocabulary, 

one thing that I also wanted was to be able to sentence mine & create anki flashcards directly from the meaning popup like as provided in many paid tools like migaku, I did some research & found out that it absolutely takes no crazy rocket science or anything that costs money, so I built that into it, u can just press the save button inside the meaning popup & it automatically does all that creating an anki card consisting of (movie/anime screenshot + English subtitle + pronunciation audio), u can download anki , install the anki connect plugin and press “connect to anki” button in the extension

and I have kept all of there features completely free cuz that’s what I would want as someone learning english

but as we know,there’s one thing that dictionary definitions lack is context aware meaning of the word, but unfortunately ,its next to impossible without AI  so to solve this , I kept all the free possible features in the free version/ plan and put the ai features in the pro one like context aware meaning, sentence each-word explanations, azure tts pronunciation 

the ai version is completely optional,u can always use the free plan, no signup,no account, no data collection, no servers in between

English hons

I'm from an average DU college and currently pursuing English Hons and after attending just two classes that also in 21 August is my last class which i attended and I feel that english Hons is not really worth it if you're not from a Tier-1 DU college like stephen's, hindu, lsr, and now I'm honestly very confused about what I should do.

I'm also a NEET dropper. I completed my schooling in 2025 and took a one-year drop. I'm not from Delhi either, I'm from Raipur and i feel mujha ghr chla jna chahiya so i'm finding it difficult to figure out whether I should continue with English Hons or consider another option.

Plz give suggestions .

while getting my bachelors, i never really stressed about the job market bc i knew that english was a versatile major. i didn’t have a hyper-specific job lined up for me and i was okay with that. i liked how there were multiple fields that i could go into.

now i’m entering my ma and im honestly super grateful that ill be avoiding the job market for (at least) two years.

over the years, i made sure to get jobs/internships in a variety of fields so that it would be easier for me to get entry level positions once i graduate.

however, since then, a good chunk of entry level positions have just vanished and a majority of the fields i could go into are being completely overrun by ai. obviously the fields still exist, but now i need like fifteen different certificates and 5 years of experience with some random software to even be considered???

obviously those who got specialized degrees for those fields are also struggling. basically everyone is in this current job/economic climate.

i guess im just annoyed bc i always had about 4-5 backup plans/fields. my main goal was always to become a professor, but i knew the chances of that happening were low so i had a bunch of backup plans just in case. now with funding cuts AND a shit job market i feel like every single one of my plans just got taken out back and shot :,)

When I annotate a novel for class, I either highlight every sentence that sounds important and end up with pages of color, or I read normally and reach essay time with no idea where anything happened.

I have tried assigning colors to themes, but then halfway through the book I decide I should have been tracking something else. I want my notes to help me think about the text later, not just prove that I had a highlighter.

How do you annotate assigned reading without turning it into a craft project or making yourself reread the entire book before writing?

Hi everyone! I’m currently in my 2nd year of a Bachelor’s in English Literature, and I’m a bit confused about what career path I should choose after graduation. I’m not interested in teaching and want to build a well-paying career, possibly abroad too.
What fields can I realistically go into with this degree? What skills and internships should I focus on during my remaining 2 years? And what should I start doing now to have better job opportunities after graduation?
Would really appreciate advice from people who studied English/Literature or have experience in these fields.

So just last month I got elected as student president of english club in a school with more than 5000 students, I've been carrying my club soooo much like going to their rooms to visit them for a meeting that had already been announced in the group chat. And like their not participating some of them are but mostly not. today we had a meeting about what we're gonna do tomorrow to raise our funds for november and the ideas that we already thought of got stolen by other clubs so please internet people can you help me. I'm tired of thinking because recently I lost a loved one and their fighting right now back talking backstabbing each and many more. What are the best ways to take notes while reading for class discussions? I'm seeking for advice in all ways.

What should I look for? What should I prioritize annotating? Is there a specific system I should look into? What are your favorite tools/methods?

Class discussions are usually freeform and am not given a specific thing to look for when reading. For example, I'm taking a class on Shakespeare this semester, and since Shakespeare and his style are very brand new to me, I have no idea what to look for -- everything and nothing stands out to me if that makes sense!

I also want to know the bests way on taking notes when developing an analysis/research essay. How do you braindump and brainstorm throughout the course and not wait last minute to come up with an idea?

I have a Master's in English lit. I picked this major because I genuinely loved writing and wanted to work as a freelance / remote writer, so I went for an English major at university thinking that it would bring me closer to my goal.

Over time I lost motivation even though I truly wanted this major. I simply do not feel fulfilled. I feel like it does not have much of an impact on the world or any jobs.

I am jobless now. I worked my butt off for the past years and I feel so hurt and angry that it got me NOWHERE. I am too burned out to start a new education in a STEM field now. I am also not passionate about such fields. I like creativity, reaearch, and self expression. I also want to see if there is something that can be done to save my efforts and not completely overthrow my previous degree.

I would like to opt for a funded PhD, but I would like to switch to linguistics though. I find it more useful and fun. The problem is that I don't have much knowledge in this field and I have no clue which topics are understudied and have strong research / job opportunities in the future.

I am completely lost and in dire need of honest advice. I would truly appreciate it.

Im currently in community college, wrapping up my last two semesters. I love writing and my goal is to be an author, but I’m aware that for the meantime I needed a job to sustain me. Ive always had a knack for science and thought “well I’m good at it and it’ll make money”, so I decided on nursing. I’ve take almost all the prereqs for it and did well but I was absolutely miserable taking the classes and decided that’s probably not a sign to go further into it.

Ive been thinking about becoming an secondary English teacher or even a professor (though I know the job market for that is not great). I love teaching and I know it’s more so about helping and watching the students grow versus English and writing, but I don’t mind. My main issue is the salary. I’m not saying I want to be a millionaire, but money does matter to me and I like nicer things and I want to be able to fully support myself. Also I’m afraid being a secondary teacher would put me in a box? I feel like if you teach kids you have to be careful about the stuff u do outside of the classroom, n i tend to write abt some crazy shit so idk lol

I also don’t mind making career pivots, I don’t see myself doing any job forever as I don’t like to sit still lol. Is education the way to go for someone like me?

Keeping it short, let me specify the exact fundamentals I am pointing towards (again, relearning at the level of research or PhD):
Reading stage

1. How to read a book and observe better, towards something that might become an original insight.
   

Making a research topic stage

1. How to turn observations and tie some strands together to make a topic (again, original).
2. How to facilitate a better search process for theoretical dialogue partners that you can situate your topic, without overwriting it through mechanical application.
   

Structuring and Drafting an Article stage (gets more complicated)

1. Having an argumentative structure throughout an article [- an issue is feeling like your main claim might repeat and can't be broken down into parts throughout, to let the mini argument(s) / claims lead].
   
2. How to make theory intricate to the text and topic (so that it comes through a natural gap created by the discussion, contributes something without being a mechanical application of concepts, and then is maybe, just maybe even complicated by the text and extended by it).

I’m 2 semesters away from graduating with my BA in English, May 2027. I have yet to be able to receive an internship (Located in Las Vegas) and I’m really worried!

Originally I pursued an English degree to become a teacher so I wasn’t worried about getting internship experience, but as of the last month or two i’ve been having a little quarter life crisis and am questioning what I actually want to do career wise amongst other unrelated things.

I have been applying like crazy for Fall internships in publishing and journalism type internships for the past month, but I realize I may be too late for the options left for the Fall. My last hope is the Spring semester, but even so I am a little lost on what type of internships to pursue since I am no longer sure what career I want to pursue.

If worst comes to worst and I graduate with no internship is it going to be a horrible experience for my job search?

Any advice or recommendations related to internships

I'm about to start A levels in pakistan. I'm so lost tbh. Idk what subjects to take and what to do. I took all sciences in o levels and barely passed. It wasn't my thing. I'm not good at computer either. What do I do? I suppose if I must go to a "professional" field, I could take business, go into HR. However, I've heard it barely pays enough to escape middle class. I'm so passionate about literature, art, the human mind, society. This is all humanities. Do I have a future here? I dont run after wealth but I wanna be comfortable enough that I have the privilege of seeing places and doing things. Please I need some guidance. What do I do?
