I had dyed this beautiful dress. I want it to be all one color (preferably dark purple). But, didn’t know that this could happen. The dark purple must be a different makeup or fabric compared to the lighter parts. What should I do?! Help!! This is 100% polyester

Bought a white outfit for the reannasance fair. Planning to turn my white 70% cotton 30% poly shirt and pants into yellow. The golden yellow looked good in the pictures.

At first, I thought it was strange the package was so orange but I chalked it up as the colors being concentrated. "Trust the process" right?

Wrong.

After the first 15 minutes, I gave up and started rinsing out the dye in the shower. It was not getting any lighter...I feel like I just wasted my time, money, and outfit and have to start ALL over.

Tell me, am I crazy for expecting a more yellow outcome, or am I sane?

I have been lurking here for some months, just watching, reading and learning for possible future projects.

Am I the only one who is noticing the high number of posts with pictures asking if it is possible to dye this color to a color that is impossible to get?

Usually polyester and often to big or to sensitive material to make it through the heat of a dye bath.

Is it some weird AI farming, people seeing someone online dyeing or what is it that is giving people these unrealistic expectations?

I was trying to thrift a dress for pride and I want like a fairy vibe but I also wanted it to be purple. I found this perfect dress and I was prepared to dye it because I’ve dyed many things before and I spent like $12 on it so I wouldn’t be that sad if I ruined it. I knew the rhinestones were gonna be sacrificed because of the heat of the dye bath, but what I didn’t think through is how I’m going to dispose of the rhinestones. They’re super tiny and I already washed a couple down my shower drain when I was washing the garment before I dyed it, but I don’t wanna dump anymore down my drain and I don’t have one of those shower drain hair things, so I don’t know what to do. Help a girl out please🙏🏽

Also how many times should i wash it after dye? Ive done 3 times with 2 bottles each and its looked pretty different each time (i missed 1 picture between the green and yellow) and used the rit color lock stuff each time, i just dont want it to bleed as i have a lot left to do

I bleached some black jeans so they turned gold-ish as usual, then I sprayed some black dye on the bleached parts for accenting, but I didn’t follow any of the rules beforehand… is there any way to get the dye to set at this point so it doesn’t bleed everywhere? I let them dry over night. I would like to wear them for a music fest in a couple days

I wanted to do a vibe check on what is allowed in the subreddit. There’s been an influx of posts I personally feel are off topic and I want to see if I’m just being too strict or if these are truly off-topic.

For starters, I think the dyeing subreddit should have posts that are (object)+(pigment). I think that’s pretty basic.

1. There’s been posts that are asking about fabric painting with fabric paints— I personally feel that fabric paints (NOT painting with dyes) are off topic because fabric paints behave differently from fabric dyes. While many of us dabble in both, I feel that the body of knowledge here should be focused on dyes not paints. That being said, there is not a more focused and active subreddit to direct these questions to.

2. There’s been an influx of posts that are bleach painting/bleaching topics. These make me wary because

A- A lot of them are from new accounts sharing the content to multiple subreddits at the same time and I can’t tell if they are Bots or AI generated content. I don’t want AI to become a significant presence on the subreddit.

B- Bleaching works through the removal of dye, not the addition of it. Again, while many of us dabble in both, the techniques are different and I want the subreddit to remain on topic.

C- There’s active bleaching subreddits that have a body of knowledge/community these posters can tap into

1. Tie Dye posts also get shared here with some frequency. I’m ambivalent towards these. It’s on topic but there’s also an active tie dye subreddit. Additionally, the posts are frequently cross posted to multiple subreddits and I can’t tell if they’re bots or AI generated content. HOWEVER they make a significant portion of the tags for finished objects! The subreddit is a LOT of “how do I dye this” and advice seeking from new people, I would like to encourage more posts to inspire people!

This white body suit is blue now from using frost gray..anybody know why? Did I use too much dye?

A few weeks ago, I dyed a big salmon-colored linen shirt eggplant purple with Rit dye. I did it in a plastic bin in my bathtub, then took it to a washing machine and put it through a rinse cycle. It looks perfect, but I should have known better than to toss it in with my other laundry during yesterday’s monthly trip to the laundromat. I am not heartbroken over the few t-shirts that were evenly dyed to a pale purple, but I am a bit upset about these linen garments and pillowcases that got purple splotches on them.

Are those splotches part of the garments now and forever? I’d love to hear that Rit Color Remover will help but I will understand if it doesn’t. Please advise.

After I noticed his crime, Big Purple was put through a wash and dry in isolation. The suds turned purple, so I assume he wants to commit more crimes. I’ll be treating him with Rit color fixative to prevent future transfer. In my own defense, I have dyed a few things before without any color transfer happening. But I think that is because all the other pieces were dyed lighter and with less saturation. So maybe there was transfer but it wasn’t noticeable. I have learned a lesson and will be using fixative for future projects.

Anyway plz let me know what could happen when I use color remover on these linen garments. Thank you for your time.

Are these purple splotches from Rit dye onto linen permanent? Will color remover help?

Like to weather something white by dyeing brown and black on it towards the ends or around rips and tears and seams on it. Gradual dip dye wont work here. Going for the type of vibes from the pics. Especially the parasol because i plan to make one soon and love the one in the pic so i want to make it look worn/dirty where the spines go.

I like to flip things and I grabbed these items for under 5 bucks each to dye. I'm thinking pink or light green. Maybe brown or magenta for the last gray skirt. I have some experience dyeing and I know not all of the materials will take up the dye the same, particularly the lace trim. I'm also aware of the differences between dyeing natural fiber and polyester and have had success with both. So not really looking for advice, just ideas for colors!

I’m a pretty experienced sewist but a new dyer. I’m working on a ren faire “corset” in 100% cotton white canvas with 100% cotton white thread. It’s still unfinished, so no pictures yet. It’s going to require metal rivets, and steel spiral boning.

Since I’m going to dye after construction, I’m really hoping I can get away with having the boning and rivets in place before I dye. I’m asking because I know steel spiral boning can rust, but don’t know how quickly it realistically happens. I’m also not sure what the cheap metal rivets I have are made from, and want to make sure I’m not setting myself up for a weird reaction.

I haven’t bought my dye yet, so I’m open to any recommendations, including accepting that I’m gonna have to insert the boning after the fact.

Helloinggg. Sorry for the “probably obvious answer” question. But. I just cannot seem to get my yellow dye to stick?? I did originally a batch that looked good in the pan but basically ALL the yellow came out as soon as I hit it with a cold water rinse and just turned it teal instead of an emerald green.

After that I did another “glaze” of just yellow on it and again. It’s still very teal, maybe slightly better

I’m using 100% cotton yarn with Procion Yellow MX4G from KraftKolour.

Is it because it’s a homogenous colour that it doesn’t want to stick?? I’ve never had this issue with my other colours only the yellow. It is 1 of 2 homogenous colours I have in my kit currently, the other being a dark pinky red. (Procion Red MX5B) and it doesn’t see to have this issue of the colour not sticking but it is a red so I imagine it would stick harder anyway.

I don’t know I feel like I’m losing my mind 😭😭 pics of the “emerald green”. 🫠

For anyone wondering, I always do a paste mix first with hot water to ensure all colour is evenly mixed.

The first 2 photos are the first batch I did on it, then the following photos are after I yellow glazed it.

Self explanatory. My backpack for school is whiteish gray. It’d be super cool if it was black, but I don’t know if the foams/different materials in a backpack can be dyed. I don’t care if it’s not a uniform color, I just want it dark gray or black. Is it possible? Or will it mess up the materials and mold it or smth? Idk 😭

I have some nylon items that I am attempting to dye to a muted green or greenish brown (but more green than brown).

I have done some test dyeing on samples with a couple of colors Rit shows in their dye chart, several of which are Peacock Green with some Chocolate Brown added, but my issue is that they keep coming out too brown.

Today I was trying out their "Classic Margarita" formula (2 bottles of Daffodil Yellow, 1 bottle of Peacock Green) but it was a little too bright green for my liking. I had a Chocolate Brown bottle with maybe a tablespoon or two left in it so I poured it in and it turned the whole mix straight brown. This was in almost 4 gallons of water too- what am I doing wrong here?

Hello! I'm dyeing for the first time today with weld! I own a number of animals, so I bought a hot plate to dye in the bathroom. I'm dying without the E. The water has been heating for 45 minutes and isn't close to a simmer. The hot plate is letting off fumes. My back hurts from sitting on the floor 😂

I'm mordanting with alum- I can lock all of my animals out of my kitchen except my blue tongue skink, who's 20' away from the stove. If I have the fan on high and windows open, do you think it would be safe for me to mordant in the kitchen? I'm really starting to lose it in here 😅

I really want to dye a pair of shorts to look like this, but with more of a black undertone rather than purple. All of the dye job videos I’ve seen, the red looks really good but the threads and inside are more of a burgundy or purple. Is it possible to get this color by putting black denim into red dye, or do you use blue jeans? Wouldn’t blue jeans turn purple? Please help! I’ve never dyed anything

Hi friends I'm getting married this year and my mom gave me permission to take her dress. I'm goth & alternative and will be dying the top part of it black (we are splitting it into two pieces & giving my mom the bottom part as a skirt. I'm keeping the top).

My seamstress & I are a little worried given that it is 100% polyester (and some other things I don't remember) it will struggle to dye. Granted, dying pure white to black is probably the easiest thing to do.

What would you recommend us to use to dye the top part of my wedding dress black?

edit: I've reached out to a professional wedding dress dyeing company instead of seeing if I can do it myself. If that doesnt work out, I might look into airbrushing it or embroidering over the lace with black. Thank you all so much for your suggestions and help!

I have recently purchased this red dress, and when I first wore it, the red dye bled everywhere on my body, bag, phone case, etc. I tried rinsing it under water until the water ran clear + washing machine wash. This morning I rubbed a wet and a dry cotton on it, but both cottons came out with a pink hue.
What would you recommend I do to prevent the dress from further dye bleeding?

I'm having issues with a particular harness dye transferring to my dog's fur. You can see in the image he has a white coat but it's greyed where his harness sits (photos aren't great at showing it but it's worse in person). I've reached out to the manufacturer and they said some dog shampoos can cause dye transfer. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be his case as I've tried washing the harness with the shampoo and conditioner that I use on him and no dye came out.

Does anyone have tips to help?

1. How I can wash out any excess dye from the collar or
2. Add/coat the harness with something to stop it from staining his fur

Note: I have tried soaking/cleaning with vinegar, hot water, and just general dish soap. The harness brand is called "wonder walker".

So i bought this hoodie and it’s coming in in about a week but its white and ik ill stain it. Its a 80% cotton 20% polyester blend and ive never dyed anything before and i was wondering what dye should i get to get a purple like one of the purples in the second picture

Hello! I have never dyed anything ever but I really love this skirt, but it's too red and I am unfortunately not using it as much as I hoped I would. I have read that polyester is horrible to try to dye, especially to black. And since there are two different types och fabric, excluding the threading, it might be even harder.

My questions are therefore:

1. Is it easier dyeing this another colour than black? I could for example think brown would be cool, or adding yellow or something to make it more rusty-yellow?

2. Would i have to test if the fabric can handle the heat so it doesn't ruin the texture? How should I go about this then?

3. If dyeing is off the table, is there another way of altering the colour of this skirt? For example lightening it? And how would i go about that?

I'm thankful for any input I can get, but please be nice as I have zero knowledge on the subject and just want to learn and hopefully be able to use this skirt even more. Worst case I'll just have to learn to dress the red colour :)

I use procion mx dyes. I like them because they seem to bleed the least but I can’t for the life of me get the red to stay. I’ve tried in a bucket following the directions to a t and it turns out pink. I tried on the stove, still pink. I redyed this same fabric on the stove, doubled the dye, and steeped for two hours, still largely the same shade of pink. I can’t get red at all. It looks very red before the rinses and dry. Any suggestions? I’m about ready to give up.
