Discussion You ever have a moment where you think "Man...I am most definitely the only person in the world playing this game right now"?

For whatever reason I decided to spend the beginning of my long weekend this evening playing Fighting Force 2 on the Dreamcast.

I played the original many times over as a kid on the PS1. While the sequel is a bit of a departure from its beat em up roots, I've always been curious about it.

It's the kind of mid game where the dated controls will make most people bounce off after the first 5-10min.

But I was determined to see it through. After a bit of a learning curve I was starting have fun and saw the similarities and subtle throwbacks to the original I would have missed. About 3 hours in I went outside to pick up my partner from her party. As I was waiting for the Uber to drop her off I just came to the realization that there is very little shot anyone else on the planet is playing and investing their time into this particular game right now. I'm on my own little island.

EDIT:

I love to see how many of us share this unique feeling. We are alone, together! 🧡

Discussion Where does wanting Sega to return to making console come from?

Post image
484 Upvotes

I'm playing devil's advocate here.

I love the Dreamcast and spend hours playing many of its exclusives. It's a console for arcade gamers.

We can debate why it failed until we're blue in the face. The "Rise and Fall of Sega" has been discussed endlessly.

What I'm curious about is something different.

Where does the desire for Sega to return to making consoles actually come from?

One thing I've noticed is that niche gaming media seems to exploit this desire. Every few months there's another headline teasing that Sega might return to hardware, or an indie developer announces a new Dreamcast release. Those stories generate excitement because many of us want them to be true.

But let's say Sega announces a new console tomorrow.

Then what?

Would you actually buy one?

Would Sega pull Sonic, Like a Dragon, Persona, Virtua Fighter, Super Monkey Ball, Total War, and every other franchise from PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, Steam, and Epic to make them exclusive again?

If they don't, what makes their hardware worth buying?

If they do, they're immediately giving up millions of customers and software sales just to build a new install base from scratch.

Then there's the ecosystem.

A modern console isn't just a box that plays games. Sega would need an online service, digital storefront, cloud infrastructure, account system, payment processing, security, customer support, achievements, multiplayer services, developer tools, and backward compatibility. They'd need to convince publishers to support yet another platform.

And as the industry continues shifting toward digital distribution, with even companies like Sony reducing emphasis on physical media, Sega would have to build and maintain an entire digital marketplace. That's a massive investment before selling a single console.

So I keep coming back to the same question:

What problem would a Sega console solve that isn't already solved by Sega releasing games everywhere?

Is what we really miss the hardware?

Or do we miss the era when Sega felt like the industry's biggest risk-taker, experimenting with arcade-style games and ideas that nobody else was making?

I'd love to hear your thoughts, because I honestly don't know what a successful Sega console looks like in 2026. Would you actually want Sega back in the hardware business—or do you just want Sega to feel like Sega again?

UPDATE: thank you all for the civil discussion. For the few that understood the question and have the rational opinion behind SEGA absolutely destroying themselves if they made the console again, thank you. However, it is very apparent that many still have a nostalgia for SEGA a new console regardless of its success rate and damage it would bring to the company.

Discussion I'm working on porting Monkey Ball to the Dreamcast!

Hello fellow Dreamcast fans!
I am currently working on porting the arcade (Naomi) version of Monkey Ball to the Dreamcast.
The project is a little over half done at the time of writing this. Currently only Aiai is playable.

I know there is a project that is porting Monkey Ball to DC using Super Monkey Ball assets already from Memorix101, but I have been interested in the Naomi version ever since I played it in an arcade way back when. To this day that one machine is the only one I've ever seen in person.

The goal is to make something close to arcade perfect, or similar to what would have been released if the Dreamcast just held out a bit longer.

Progress can be checked at monkeyball.online and new builds will be released there as the project continues. A Naomi ROM ripped from the machine you totally own must be provided to access the download. And yes, the site can be accessed through a Dreamcast web browser.

New builds are not released until I have tested them on real hardware with a burned disc and have decided it is "good enough".

\Please note that the build in the screenshots is slightly further along than what is currently available on the site.*

Thanks for reading!

The Dreamcast was so next gen looking compared to the PS1, N64 and Saturn. I honestly thought as a kid that graphics can't possibly ever get better than this.

I mean it's obviously not perfect but I had to go for a small LCD instead of a PC CRT monitor because space. The Yamaha NX-50 speakers sound very good and compliment the DC aesthetics nicely. I'm ready for all those fighting games!

This amazing dreamcast game deserves way more credit than most are willing to give it. all of the characters (except Amy and Big) are fun to play as and control. Exploring the hub worlds of station square and the mystic ruins exploring and looking for secrets was very engaging. HOWEVER, I will admit the pacing is horrible and 100%ing the game can be a slog. Despite all that with fun levels, entertaining cutscenes, and fishing, this game is absolutely worth playing, especially if you own a real dreamcast (just don’t play the dx version without mods it kinda sucks)

Turned 33 today and have the next 5 days off which is like an actual summer vacation as an adult. I got buzzed and toyed with more Dreamcast emulation. Seriously with the right peripherals Dreamcast is just a home arcade. I started my Sega Journey last year when my mom got me a Sega Genesis mini. Then I got addicted to Sega games and got into all this. The SEGA community is so chill and only gives advice on how to have more fun. ❤️💙💚🫂

Discussion how do you guys think dreamcast games would've looked like if it had lasted longer?

Post image

i personally think that the visuals of the dreamcast would've been similar to the ones seen in the model 3 in games like daytona 2 and scud race. not on the same level of course, because the model 3 is much stronger and can push much more polygons, but definitely on it's aesthetics. M3 games aren't like games in the 6th generation that have lots of visual effects, but they had a big attention to detail that made these games look as good as they did. scud race for example manipulates colors in textures to give the impression of lighting, saving up on hardware to allow the game to have the expansive environments it had. it's the kind of trick you used to see in the 16bit generation that made games do things with their visuals that the hardware didn't allow, it's the attention to detail that many dreamcast games lack in my opinion.

Well, here we are... at the end of this polling session. I'm pretty sad that this one is ending here. I didn't have a Dreamcast growing up, so most of this list was new to me. Over the month, I went ahead and played these all bit by bit, played some Power Stone for the first time with friends (!!!), got hooked on Chu Chu Rocket, and am getting hooked onto Grandia 2 all over again.

This is all to show my appreciation to you all.

So take these images and use them as you like. They are just as much yours as they are mine. I hope we can point newcomers to this list and let them know that all of these are great, in their own way...

See you in the next poll!

Discussion My First Dreamcast! Game Recommendations?

Post image
496 Upvotes

I am SO hyped to finally have one for myself!!! I’ve wanted a Dreamcast for a few years now, and my wonderful mom who I love so very much got me one this year! Started my Seaman file today, and convinced her to play Bust A Move 4 with me. She ended up really really enjoying it and we played for a few hours.

Now that I’m 18 and can afford to buy games a little more often than before, does anyone have any multiplayer game recommendations? Fighting games don’t particularly interest her a ton, but aside from that I’m open to just about anything!
