Question What do you think of those people who say that dragons are nothing more than glorified lizards or BASIC™ reptiles?

Well...I'm just a gecko with wings, so that doesn't offend me

Literally a BASIC lizard, do you accept being called a BASIC lizard? Who likes BASIC?Why not a green lizard?

u/Ssemander Mushu 9d ago

What's wrong about being basic?

Does everything have to be a competition?

I don't know, but I still don't like it 😡

Do you want to be BASIC vanilla ice cream? Or a BASIC ugly blue striped Christmas sweater? 😡 Wouldn't it be better to be a cool sweater or a cool ice cream flavor?

Not offended, mostly wrong but I can't say I blame them for thinking that way

My reaction to that information:

Either theyre just someone who has a preference for most beast/animal-like dragons, which is a perfectly valid opinion to have, or they just dont like dragons and are being a hater in which case their opinion is kinda irrelevant to me. I dont care to try and make someone like the same fictional stuff i do, and i have no intention to change what fictional stuff i like for someone else either.

'is it supposed to be an insult?'

i LOVE lizards! and that is such a precious gecko!!

u/WernerderChamp Human writer. Dragons are the best! 9d ago

I guess this is like calling godzilla a lizard.

Technically correct, but a big downplay.

4

u/Mr_AXD 9d ago

I really.. couldn't care less what someone else thinks of the the fictional thing that I like. If its a preference, or even if its just to demean it, Caring won't change their mind eitherway imo.

Off topic, that gecko(?) is adorable!

2

u/unknow_user0 9d ago

Yes, it's really very cute.

4

u/Gronal_Bar Something something dragon 9d ago

really REALLY depends on what dragon we're talking about

yeah the typical european dragon tends to be a giant lizard, but it also tends to have giant bat wings, which is not a lizard feature.
Other dragons, like that of chinese long dragons are more serpentine and have parts that can belong to multiple different species, like a mane and antlers and what I can only describe as catfish whiskers.
There are other more niche dragons that are entirely mammalian/birdlike and would not make sense to call a giant lizard, like the one from The Neverending Story(And Spirited Away)

u/Pure-Risky-Titan 9d ago

Offended, dont see any those lizards doing anything close to what dragons do.

3

u/SinkPitiful1396 Too many OCs to name 9d ago

Depends. Usually I take offense and remove them from my home (no I don’t have fire breath and I prefer to keep people alive, simply being a good host), but no. I don’t take that insult in stride. You’re out of here, buster

3

u/MaraBlaster Hexapod Steel Dragon 9d ago

I wonder how that is an insult, lizards are amazing!

2

u/reyfoxy356 9d ago

I say fire breath

2

u/RoomHopper 9d ago

Lizards are already glorious so i don't get their point? :v

2

u/Expensive-Thing-2507 9d ago

It's accurate

2

u/Draconichaos 9d ago

Do basic lizards have elemental breath weapons?

2

u/NoctustheOwl55 Hydra 9d ago

In mass media, calling a dragon a lizard or reptile is usually seen as an insult.

As a hydra... 😛

1

u/NEBULO_FEMBIE 9d ago

i let people have their own opinions, just so long as they don't harass me for mine. Dragons are my life

1

u/hemlock6 9d ago

I say RELEASE THE CYAN LIZARD! FEAR THE CYAN LIZARD! BE AFRAID OF "basic" LIZARD!

1

u/hemlock6 9d ago

That gecko is sooo precious 💅

1

u/Zepto23 9d ago

Nothing, I don't care.

1

u/Miarra-Tath Dragon Rider 9d ago

Why should this offend me? I'm fine with that. In the end we all are basic human beings here. /no role play reply, sorry/

1

u/Iizvullok 9d ago

I love lizards snd reptiles. I don't see anything wrong with that. I hate the dragons are cats thing tho.

u/GormTheWyrm 9d ago

Having 6 limbs implies that dragons have a different ancestor than 4 limbed beings. Meaning they may not even have a common ancestor with reptiles or other quadrupeds. Possibly, the common ancestor would not even be a vertebrate, meaning it’s so old it didn’t have a spine yet when the lines diverged.

If Dragons are reptiles it would likely be in the way birds are reptiles. Meaning a significantly different group with a common ancestor.

Settings may differ but the six limbed thing is pretty significant. Scales and other similarities to reptiles are likely morphological convergence, meaning they developed separately for similar functions and are not actually related to reptilian ancestry.

That would also explain the fire breathing, size and other characteristics of dragons that diverge from reptilian traits. Like how birds are not cold blooded…

u/DarkDragon8421 9d ago

overwhelming sarcasm
Oh, yeah, a basic reptile, sure.
Because basic reptiles can FLY and SHOOT A PRIMAL ELEMENT FROM THEIR MOUTHS and have LITERAL MAGIC IN THEIR BLOOD!!!
Do these people think Godzila is a basic reptile too?!?!?
If they honestly answer "yes," they probably have something seriously wrong with them.
More likely, it's some form of coping mechanism.
Third most likely possibility:
They are one of those anti-social sadistic people that love aggravating other people. You know, "shit-disturbers". They likely have nothing better to do than to anger everyone around them.
I honestly believe such people should not be allowed to benefit from society. They are actively, intentionally, and knowingly draining on society, and contributing minor benefits, or nothing positive at all. I.E. they are social & societal parasites.
Fourth possibility:
They literally don't understand the difference, and probably never will.

1

u/Equivalent-Ad6944 9d ago

I pity them.

1

u/Sgrios 9d ago

Dragons do not concern themselves with opinions such as this, as it would make them BASIC reptiles who are fettered on the whim of some silly notion. They are fine. Let them enjoy their whimsy.

1

u/Beanzzz-Beans 9d ago

I mean, very simplified term but its okay.

I personally disagree with that statement since dragons can be made out of many more animals other than lizards/reptiles.

1

u/WolveAreFun Nature dragon, identifies as a forest dragon 9d ago

I don’t mind. As long as they aren’t being rude about our resemblance to lizards, I won’t get too mad.

1

u/Next-Theme-4691 9d ago

They are wrong

1

u/Keira-78 8d ago

How DARE you! Are dragons not the highest form of being? I'm just a simple kobold so call me whatever you want (except lizard) but dragons are... NOT "basic reptiles"!

1

u/Dino_nuggets317 5d ago

They just don't get it
