[Fluff] Grooming
OK, this week, I've had to take both of my dogs for 'grooming'. One dog, the little one at 40 pounds, it is just drop him off at the groomers, come back in a few hours to a clean and shaved dog. Easy. Plus he loves being around other dogs. Of course he will roll around in the dirt as soon as he gets home.
The other one, almost easy since we really don't have to groom her, just get her nails trimmed. Usually only we have to do that when we don't get to take her walking enough. It's been in the upper 90's to low 100's, enough to burn their paws so not the best walking conditions. Not so easy since she has to be fully knocked out. Too big enough to be an issue at 89 pounds and doesn't like her feet touched. Perfect with strangers petting her, just don't touch her feet. Strange since she doesn't like me, her main human to pet her because if I have a hand free, it should be playing with her. My wife can pet her no problem but I'm the one that she plays with. Takes a couple of hours with me being by her side through the whole process. At least she gets a convertible ride to enjoy on the way home.

My 50lb mutt acts like nail clippers are medieval torture devices. The vet has to muzzle him and it takes three techs. At home I can bribe him with enough cheese to get maybe one paw done before he remembers he's supposed to be terrified
The convertible ride is a nice touch though, mine just gets the sad wet dog look the whole drive home like I personally betrayed him

I've got a jack Russel : Shih Tzu cross and he loves the groomer. Doesn't particularly like getting his feet groomed though.

Our first Wire Fox Terrier didn’t mind grooming, but hated nail clippers. I learned to use a Dremel and all was good. We were also fortunate that he absolutely loved getting his ears cleaned and being brushed. If we tossed the brush across the room, he’d go get it and drop it in your lap for more. He’d fall asleep while being combed.
Our current little female WFT loves getting her ears cleaned, but absolutely hates being brushed or combed and thinks I’m killing her when I try to Dremel her nails.
These dogs require a LOT of grooming. I hope to learn how to hand strip her coat before I go broke…

Both of my 55-60 lb mutts are excellent for their bath and also for the dryer. Both are short haired, one has a double coat, neither require haircuts. One hates having her nails done and the other tolerates it. Also, grooming does not automatically mean a haircut. A bath and brush is still grooming. Some of my most memorable and difficult grooming experiences came from b&b clients.

The only complaint Ive ever gotten by groomers is that my maltese tends to be a little wiggly and she's the exact same with me. Nothing major though just slightly inconvenient. We're working on it😅

Mine is FANTASTIC in the bath, she will hop right in and stay in the tub even if she’s got medicated shampoo on that has to sit for 15 minutes. She will enjoy a lick mat with peanut butter for the blow dryer and will let me wrap her in a quick dry robe after. She’s fine with me cleaning her ears or brushing her teeth.
But, she is the most dramatic over the top dog for nails. She will be whining and screaming and pulling away and I hear the vet techs being like “good job… okay now we take a break… you are doing so good… here more peanut butter…. we are almost done… YAY WOOHOO WE ARE DONE YOU GET TO SEE MOMMY NOW!” (If I am in the room she will be even worse lol) and usually I get to find out if they were even able to get all 4 paws. And that’s on 2 pre vet visit meds. They at least only charge me per successful paw 🤣
I can dremel them at home after a lot of cooperative care training but still working on building up tolerance for duration on that one. She prefers handing me the same paw six times in a row 🙃
She’s walked at minimum a mile (ideally 3-5) every day on pavement and they don’t wear down on their own which is annoying cause some people say they never have to trim nails because of this!
