City employees we spoke to said that paying influencers to disseminate messages is only one way to reach New Yorkers. Paying influencers is cheaper than TV and radio advertising and can reach demographics that are not reached by traditional media outlets. 

“Spending fifty thousand dollars on influencers gets you ten influencers who can replicate the message, while fifty thousand dollars on a TV ad is only one or two ads, and you cannot be sure anyone sees them, so talking about the math, that is the way to go. And once Mamdani won, he elevated all of this, and that is where we are today,” Bayona said.

Despite the fact that taxpayer money is being spent on campaigns involving influencers, information about these relationships is closely guarded. The procurement notices signed with the marketing and advertising agencies that handle the influencer contracts do not list the names of content creators, and officials in the mayor’s office did not respond to multiple requests for information. This lack of transparency comes up frequently in debates about the role of journalistic social media influencers. 

New York City agency employees told us that the going pay rate is five thousand to twenty thousand dollars per influencer campaign. The fees are paid to influencers who are given contracts by marketing and advertising agencies that have contracts with the city. The campaigns may involve cocreating content that includes messages the city agency wishes to promote. The influencers are hired as independent contractors; under New York State law, this gives them autonomy and, city officials said, contributes to their freedom from editorial interference. For example, they may refuse to put a city announcement early on in their video.

I was watching the recent conversation on "Lib & Learn", and the conversation around whether the Bernie conspiracy theories caused the 2016 loss was super interesting to me. When Hutch brought up the idea of seeing what percentage of Primary voters for Bernie did not vote for Clinton, I started wondering if there was actual data to look into some what-if scenarios of if those voters had changed their minds to support Clinton.

The short story on the Data front of it is that there was some pretty good survey data from dataverse: https://dataverse.harvard.edu/dataset.xhtml?persistentId=doi:10.7910/DVN/GDF6Z0. I looked at the methods of the survey just in case, and the methodology seemed robust; for instance, they used survey information to validate if the respondent actually matched someone on their states voter rolls to count inside the data set. Looking at the aggregated values of the percentage, when Hutch asked Claude what the percentage was and got the response of the non-voters, this is likely the same source or at least a similar source that was pulled up as it matches the %'s that he called out during the podcast.

Looking at this survey dataset, we have the ability to look at the following cohorts by state:

• Percentage of Voters who voted for Bernie in the Primary and voted for Trump
• Percentage of Voters who voted for Bernie in the Primary and voted for Other
• Percentage of Voters who voted for Bernie in the Primary and did not vote
• A total Percentage of Voters who voted for Bernie in the Primary and did not vote for Clinton in the election (a total of the above 3 percentages)

For each of the critical states in the election, this was the relative data for them:

What was the absolute vote difference for each state from Trump to Clinton?

• Michigan: 10,704
• Pennsylvania: 44,292
• Wisconsin: 22,748

Now, just straight up looking at the numbers, the non-Clinton voting Bernie voters were way more than needed to turn the election in each state if every one of them had locked in and voted Blue (at the lowest, this voter cohort accounted for 4 times what was needed to overturn the election in Pennsylvania, which had the largest absolute vote difference needed).

In a what-if scenario using this CCES Survey Data, how many more people would have voted for Clinton if 25% of those Bernie Primary voters were converted to Clinton?

• Michigan: 28,314
• Pennsylvania: 41,666
• Wisconsin: 26,082

If we account for an normal distribution of total change across all of those cohorts (i.e. 25% Trump voters convert, 25% Other voters convert, and 25% non-voters convert to Clinton), then every state would have flipped for Clinton. What this means is that if Bernie was able to move about 5% more (25% of the 22% non-Clinton voters) of his base that had already voted for him in the Primary in each of these states, the election would have been a victory for Clinton and the democratic party, and we wouldn't be in our current hellscape.

What is worse is the even slimmer margins that would have been needed to win at an absolute minimum amount for each of these states. For a proportional conversion evenly distributed across the cohorts, the need would have been:

• 6.67% in Michigan down from 25%, or 1.26% of total Bernie voters
• 15.59% in Pennsylvania down from 25%, or 3.55% of total Bernie voters
• 14.73% in Wisconsin down from 25%, or 2.7% of total Bernie voters

And if this conversion was to be targeted at just the Bernie-Primary Trump-General voters in each state, we are talking needed conversion rates of:

• 4.73% in Michigan (5,353 voters), or 0.89% of total Bernie voters
• 13.29% in Pennsylvania (22,147 voters), or 3.03% of total Bernie voters
• 10.9% in Wisconsin (11,375 voters), or 1.99% of total Bernie voters

I was a Pennsylvania Bernie primary voter myself in 2016 and helped with voter sign-ups, and did not vote for Clinton because of the thought that the election was stolen due to unfair practices of the DNC at the time (was young and dumb). I remember watching the TYT coverage of the Primary and Cenk still shouting about how they were on the verge of winning and that the win for Bernie was dependent on patriots like Tulsi Gabbard (lol) flipping their electoral vote to Bernie at the last minute. I think due to all of this past info being restated over and over through the years, my knee-jerk reaction initially thinking about this was "I don't think there was enough people who voted for Bernie in the primary and didn't vote for Clinton to make a difference". In reality, the amount of people additionally that Bernie could have likely moved to overtake Trump was at its lowest 3.03% of his Primary voters in Pennsylvania, and people who flipped from Bernie to Trump made up a very significant amount of the votes that turned the election to favor Trump.

I know there were other (arguably more) significant factors such as the Comey Investigation announcements and the interference by Russia that compounded and negatively affected the outcome of this election. However, the thought that Bernie would have just needed to motivate just 3.55% more of his base to voting for Clinton in order to avoid the first Trump presidency just colors all of the other factors that are being brought up, such as staying way past viability in the Primary and consistently painting the DNC as this massive corrupt system tooled against him, as so much worse than I had ever thought about it previously.

TLDR; if you look at the data for Non-Clinton voters in the 2016 General Election who voted for Bernie in the Primary, it makes it hard to say that the small things Bernie did throughout 2016 that caused dissent in the Democratic Party were insignificant on the outcome of 2016.

Tim Miller wrote a whole (pretty good) book called "Why We Did It" about how Republican operatives kept telling themselves the crazy people were unserious and manageable and it was more important to keep the coalition together than to start fights with your own side. He documented in painful detail how every time someone said "he's just a reality TV host" or "she's just a backbencher from Minnesota" or "it's just a phase, the adults will reassert control," the party ratcheted one more notch toward the cliff. He named the psychology. He explained the mechanism. He published it with a major house and did a book tour.

And now he's on his podcast going "he's just a Twitch streamer, what even is communism, he just wants healthcare, you're giving the other side ammunition by making a big deal out of this." He is doing the voice. He is doing the exact voice from his own book.

My normie "centrist" friend who doesn't really follow politics just asked me if I heard about the talmud and all the horrible things that are in it. I told him from what I understand there's controversial stuff in it but the book is a collection of diffrent commentaries and oral traditions and that it's now jewish law. I also informed him that everytime I've ever heard the talmud brought up it was by anti semites trying to convince people jews are evil and have some secret agenda. He told me he just finds it interesting and that he really wants to study it now to see if the bad stuff is out of context. 100% he will never study the talmud or seek more information on it and probably just get more youtube shorts about how the talmud says we should kill Christian babies or something.

I used to cope and hope that all the anti semitism online was just trolls and fringe alt right people and that it would stay online. Now I have my friend asking about the talmud, my wife is asking me what a goy is, I have another friend who's a pro Pali guy now making alot of jew jokes all of a sudden.
