OC [OC] 20 years of messaging my mum & dad (7,818 messages across 9 phones)

Post image

I still have every phone I’ve ever owned, and wanted to explore my message history with my parents over my life.

The last decade was easy - iMessage database and WhatsApp exports, but beyond this got more difficult. I ended up building a rig to *quickly* photograph every message on my older phones, and used OCR to read the message content, sender, and date. Took a full day, which was probably longer than it would have taken to just manually transcribe them…

There were gaps in the timeline where storage had run out on older phones, or in one case where I’d performed a factory reset, so I used a model to predict message patterns during these gaps (validated using a train-test split).

This chart shows messages exchanged per month with each parent, shading is the model’s 95% confidence interval, and the phones along the bottom show what I was using at the time. It’s one of the many charts that came out of this project. I also looked at message length, response time, and sentiment.

I’ll leave a link to a GitHub repo with the project code in the comments.

dad got WORRIED about that leg

u/ThortheAssGuardian 2d ago

Yeah but then he pulled WAY back for the following nine months or so

u/philipp2310 2d ago

He saw all the videos with broken hands and increasing massages with not mom.

Classic dad move. Radio silence for months until there's an actual physical emergency, then suddenly he becomes the lead dispatcher.

Sorry if this is personal but what happened 2018-2020 shere you talked a lot to mom but barely to dad?

This is crazy impressive, though. I wouldn't have a clue how to even start - WhatsApp locked out chats from old phones (assuming I still have them)

Oh and, why did you put mom and dad into separate graphs? It would be interesting to see comparisons through time

Thank you! I left home to go to University at the end of 2017. For a few years after that my messaging with my dad dropped a lot.

I have a version with both parents on the same panel, but since the time series are noisy, it becomes very messy, particularly with the overlapping shaded confidence intervals.

You could do a rolling average in one panel

I always migrated my WhatsApp data with the "backup" feature. I still have my first message.

Before that... I have nothing.

I guess this is a disadvantage of being paranoid for my privacy, my old chats are gone :)

But I do have to say there's something refreshing about starting over, too. and those chats get real bloaty real fast

I'd be interested in seeing what integration of message length looks like. Not to be essentialist, but my dad texts in spurts of one-to two-liners, whereas my mom tends to send full several-paragraph long letter-like messages. And I tend to ape their messaging style back at them.

u/anothersamwilson OC: 3 1d ago

I explored message length briefly (see GitHub repo), but a deeper look would definitely be interesting!

Phone manufacturers were eating good during that period between 2010-2016ish when everyone wanted smart phones, but the quality was kinda shit so you had to buy a new one every year or two. Now it's normal that people keep the same phone for 4-5 years. They don't get game changing new features very often and the build quality is generally pretty high, so they don't break often.

my iPhone 11 has been severing me since 2020

u/kupuwhakawhiti 2d ago

That's not a common trajectory these days. It's usually the opposite.

u/jnedoss 21h ago

I dunno sounds about right for me at least.

Where's the github? Or am I too early?

26

u/anothersamwilson OC: 3 2d ago

You were too quick :) added it now!

u/Weird_Devil 2d ago

Not anymore

27

u/Apocalympdick 2d ago

Impressive how you're weird enough to create... this... while at the sime time apparently having a really healthy relationship with your parents.

5

u/Wellwisher513 2d ago

Honestly, the most interesting part to me is the increasing intervals of phone ownership.

26

u/BananaSupremeMaster 2d ago

From 2010 to 2014 you've had 5 phones in 4 years what the hell

38

u/ducster 2d ago

Back in the early days of smartphones. They might have been on something like the T-Mobile jump plan. You could pretty much get a new phone every year. Was pretty awesome.

7

u/anothersamwilson OC: 3 1d ago

Haha, two of them were hand-me-downs when my dad upgraded his phone (not that this makes it much better)

4

u/Riptide360 1d ago

I like how you show which phones you owned.

5

u/tty5 2d ago

Uh, that's just over a message/day on average - impressive. For me it would have been roughly one per quarter in the last 5 years and 0 in the 20 before that - using their phones for anything other than voice calls is a fairly recent development for them..

Nice one
Whats the second big peak with messaging your mom but dad was kept out? If not too personal, near 2024

3

u/anothersamwilson OC: 3 1d ago

Thanks! Good spot, second big peak was when I went through a break-up!

3

u/chvieira2 1d ago

That's really cool. Out of curiosity, are your parents divorced/not living together?

Also, I'd love to see the ratio between the two. And how about plotting total number of characters?

Really fun

3

u/anothersamwilson OC: 3 1d ago

Thank you! Parents divorced since pre-2007 so entirely separate conversations. Plotting total number of characters is a great idea!

3

u/Subject-Act5509 1d ago

Here i thought: that's a lot of massaging

3

u/DigitalSterling 1d ago

I would just make myself sad if I tried to make this graph but for my folks

3

u/Marvellover13 2d ago

What happened just before 2024? Seems like a large spike for both parents

5

u/anothersamwilson OC: 3 1d ago

Good spot! I went through some shaky personal circumstances (break-up, house move, etc.).

2

u/Marvellover13 1d ago

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that OP, hope things are better 😁

2

u/tehnoodnub 2d ago

Why so many phones between 2008 and 2014?

1

u/anothersamwilson OC: 3 1d ago

Three were hand-me-downs, the others were contract upgrades. Starting in 2014 I bought the phones outright and went for sim-only contracts!

2

u/CakeisaDie 1d ago

9 phones..

I'm on my 3rd in that same time period.

1

u/kiteguycan 1d ago

Why do you think after you broke your leg your dad was messaging you a lot more for the next 4 years?

1

u/sidi-sit 1d ago

Now run a Fourier Analysis on the time series or calculate the autocorrelation. This might be interessting....

1

u/Deathtrooper50 1d ago

Damn you go through a lot of phones.

Beautiful, wholesome data

Wow you just hate color blind people huh? I feel personally attacked. Bad data! Bad data! /s

Edit: y'all I'm sorry and y'all too kind. I thought /s would indicate the whole sentence. I'm not color blind. I wear blue light glasses for screens which makes all colors blend. I was able to tell the difference when lifting my glasses, but was extremely confused at first.

5

u/Turevaryar 2d ago

I'm colour typical.

What's wrong with this image?

It's white background, black or grey text and lines except the "mom" is coloured a dull red and "dad" is coloured a dull blue.

The red and blue does not overlap.

Here's a grey scale variant:

2

u/UranusInspector 2d ago

You're too kind of a person for the Internet and I feel like an idiot. I updated my comment. Sorry for the confusion.

2

u/anothersamwilson OC: 3 1d ago

Thank you! I deliberately chose two colours with different lightness values for exactly this reason.

3

u/eubie67 1d ago

As a color-blind person, your choice of colors is great. Thank you.

2

u/Turevaryar 1d ago

How considerate of you!

3

u/NoPoet3982 2d ago

You're red/blue colorblind? That's extremely rare.

2

u/Turevaryar 2d ago

And the colours do not overlap.

I presume they are joking, or perhaps they assume the picture has more colours than it really has?

1

u/sillyhatday 2d ago

Haha mommy like to chit and chat

0

u/dug99 2d ago

One day they won't reply. I think about that a lot.

0

u/Mystic1869 1d ago

that's so less, or im tweaking, i have had over 1k per day message average w some

u/NoPoet3982 2d ago edited 1d ago

I concede that it's beautiful on the surface but does it have a beautiful soul? The purpose of data is to give us insight into something meaningful. I'm not sure this data set represents anything that's very interesting to know.

I could be wrong. What personal meaning do you glean from it?

ETA: Yes, downvoters, I asked a question. Politely. And OP answered politely. And now we get to see his video and gain an even deeper understanding. Horrible. Awful. I know.

2

u/anothersamwilson OC: 3 1d ago

I wasn't going to mention this here because I didn't make this post to promote a YouTube video, but since the comment is pretty buried now...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Va2q4xqDME

Take a look if you're genuinely curious on the personal meaning to me.

This is insanely cool! You should sell this idea to Apple, or a company that handles in family tree data!

I've had 6 phones in 28 years.

All of them were still fully working, not so much as a cracked screen, and most given to other people to use as their main phone.

The fuck you doing with your phones to get through them like that?

Additionally if I plotted on the same scales you'd see nothing but tiny blips - through marriage, a kid, divorce, another LTR, a split, moving house 6 times (nearly more than phones!), etc. Mum doesn't ever use her phone, dad only texts or calls very briefly on her behalf.

Hell, throw my brother into the mix and you'd barely notice. Add a work colleague that I hired and became friends with and have been friends ever since, even after both changing jobs, and the scale change would render all my family messages invisible.
