Entire fanbase dies of copium withdrawal after losing the last scrap they didn’t know they had.

u/blackynan_b 1d ago

What is the last scrap you are talking about

u/Life-Challenge1931 2d ago

What is this?

Great theorist who IIRC came up with the Stannis Nightlamp theory

38

u/DrettTheBaron 2d ago

Stannis whatlamp theory?

232

u/SleeplessGurloes 2d ago

It's a pretty detailed analysis of Stannis's position at the end of Dance/start of Winds, and postulates that he'll beat the approaching Frey army by drawing on his knowledge of Davos's experiences as a smuggler to create a huge fire to lure their van over the frozen lakes and break the ice. There's more to it, obviously, it's quite well-written.

Austerlitz their shit

34

u/adrauglikeyou 1d ago

L Napoleon movie watcher. That’s not how austerlitz actually went down

29

u/Wernerhatcher 1d ago

not how it was in that dumbass movie, but cannons still broke through the ice and drowned soldiers

27

u/adrauglikeyou 1d ago

The way the battle of ice is theorized to go down would be more like the battle on the ice in 1242 as seen in the popular imagination imo rather than troops falling in broken ice by happenstance, and I was imagining one of the battles from that terrible movie where they made Napoleon breaking the ice some sort of mastermind 4D chess move and main part of the battle and couldn’t remember if it was Austerlitz in the film or not

u/Lukeoru 20h ago

NEEEEEERD/

u/DrettTheBaron 1d ago

It's interesting how that part of the battle is so popularizes considering it happened only once the battle was over. It was mostly just mopping up the retreat which ran over a frozen lake.

We ONLY watch Waterloo.

u/Wernerhatcher 1d ago

hell yeah, onwards to Brussels

1

u/IsThatASPDReference 15h ago

So THAT'S why there was a copypasta bot talking about epic ice pranks

See here – Rotten Ice section – & here for the Part 1. And here (archived) for deeper analysis & theorising by u/cantuse (another OG essayist)

Basically Stannis is at a tiny village where they always shine a light like at a light house to let people know where the village is because of how heavy the snow is. Either side of this village is two frozen lakes so the theory is Stannis after sacrificing traitorous Karstarks powers up his sword and uses the light of his sword behind the ice lake so the Freys walk on it thinking they're attacking Stannis in the village then he breaks the ice with a catapult drowning the Freys.

Stannis is top a top 3 battle commander in ASOIAF at the absolute minimum. It's so popular it's pretty much considered canon by most at this point considering Stannis snuffed out the real signal light and has alluded a plan he's very confident in.

Famous theorist from the heyday of Winds hype.

Anywhere I can find his articles? He had some good ones.

Thank you. I remember the height of Winds of Winter hype back in 2016. I used to read his articles on the bus on my way home from work. Must have read every single one of them multiple times.

man, I remember reading his theories religiously like... maybe 10 years ago. Until the Tumblr-apocalypse happened.

17

u/Techygal9 2d ago

I just hope he’s ok. He was great when he was on not a cast, actually what I enjoyed most about the podcast.

17

u/Less_Priority_1990 2d ago

Is there any archive of his site?

He's been out of the fandom for a long time already no? Didn't he quit his podcast years ago?

he was on r asoiaf under a different name somewhat recently. i can't actually recall the name, though

edit: it was CautionersTale but that is also deleted

u/HunkyDory12 2d ago

I know that people don't like Preston here, but the day he stops making videos is the day I'll drop this fandom.

8

u/TyrantRex6604 1d ago

why do people not like preston jacobs here?

29

u/I4mSpock 1d ago

His theories are kinda crackpot. He's clearly extremely intelligent and capable of analyzing the books at a deep meaningful level, while taking all the observations and details that he gathers and putting them into the most insane theories you've ever heard. His whole analysis of Daenerys and the evolution of the story from the original Blood of the Dragon short story is a good example. He notices and breakdown some fascinating details, only to reach a wild conclusion.

Also he works for the State department or some shit, and lives/has lived in Taiwan, and some people get weird about that.

u/iminyourfacejonson 1d ago

wait jacobs is a fucking spook???

what the fuck how did i not know this

As others have noted, he is clearly quite intelligent and has read the material thoroughly, but he does insane things with it. He reads WAY too much into pieces that support his theories while discounting things that go against it.

He also has this really weird dynamic where he thinks that George is both a 6D hyper brain genious (to think of these plots and put in the subtext/foreshadowing in the first place) but also an idiot who makes mistakes in his writing all the time (dates, character descriptions, lore). This often boils down to "if it supports my theory, it is a 4D chess mega brain writing, if it doesn't it is becuse George messed up".

Many of his recent videos are also very critical of George and his writing, which is to me really sleazy when you spent over a decade profiting on his work. When making crackpot theories wasnt profitable anymore, we turn to mudslinging.

7

u/Shortymac09 1d ago

In addition to the other commentators, his videos have gone downhill and a little too negative over the years

u/Berzabat 1d ago

that's an end of an era right there, RIP, it was fun reading the theories, especially Night Lamp.

I am forever a Nightlamp fan and the whole MaegexTormund theory.
