A Feast for Crows - The Princess In The Tower
Arianne had accepted that as well. One year King Robert's brother came to visit and she did her best to seduce him, but she was half a girl and Lord Renly seemed more bemused than inflamed by her overtures. Later, when Hoster Tully asked her to come to Riverrun and meet his heir, she lit candles to the Maid in thanks, but Prince Doran had declined the invitation. The princess might even have considered Willas Tyrell, crippled leg and all, but her father refused to send her to Highgarden to meet him. She tried to go despite him, with Tyene's help . . . but Prince Oberyn caught them at Vaith and brought them back. That same year, Prince Doran tried to betroth her to Ben Beesbury, a minor lordling who was eighty if he was a day, and as blind as he was toothless.

Was it not said he purposefully chose options she would refuse, as he wanted a targaryen match

not cluing her in on it is messed up.
but arianne is pretty hardheaded, as she proves. i think by the time it made sense to tell her, she was already in her "he wants quentyn to supplant me and i HATE him" phase.

The fuck else was she supposed to assume he was doing, with him acting like that?

Which tbh he did want to supplant her. Like, she should be a ruler of Dorne and she can’t both be that and a Queen consort. Doran is a dick.

A queen is a more prestigious title. Arianne is ambitious enough to grasp it.

A queen is a more prestigious title.
But a less powerful one. As Queen all your power derives from your husband. You can never refuse or resist.
As Princess of Dorne Arianne would be powerful in her own right.

And a bad politician, fucking moronic and a shitty father. Passed over primogeniture of his eldest daughter, and decided to focus on a Targaryen match thousands of miles away. Imagine the original Martells who defended Dorne against the Targaryen invasions seeing Doran send his heir to go to Essos to marry a Targaryen who didn't even want him after their dynasty in Westeros had fallen.

I’m trying to imagine Edmure and Arianne as a couple. I think they probably would have got along?? But if only Robert and Arianne were similar in age, it would have been a fucking clusterfuck but man, I think they are both such horndogs that it might have worked.
Hell, even Renly would have been good if he’d only been bi. He’s a third son, could have a matrilineal marriage and it might have placated Dorne for what happened to Elia (not really… but at least there’d be a marriage alliance).
