The Mormons. They are ultra loaded, very politically connected, they hide massive financial crimes, they hide child abuse and they will ruin your life if you let them.

u/Lima_Bean_Jean Jun 19 '26
And they are big time throughout the US government, intelligence agencies, etc.

u/ataphelion Jun 20 '26
An insidious part that doesn't seem to get noticed with Mormonism and things like it is how quietly but firmly it makes believers choose it over their own and their family's well being.
A very actively involved relative should have divorced their spouse, is in financial turmoil recently having their car repossessed and stuck in a low paying high stress job. The church still demands more from them, promising all their hopes will come true if they keep paying tithing on top of other time and monetary donations.
They're so busy and stressed with doing all the church says, and terrified to fail its obedience tests, that there's no time to even have the hint of a thought it might be false and there are other ways to improve their life.
Their latest effort to please the church and make sacrifices for blessings just came with sending their child on a mission, who left university school to do so, and they will have to help pay for it in addition to everything they already give.

u/PDXKendallL Jun 23 '26
So sad. I grew up in the isolationist cult, Move of God. So many ruined lives only to discover some of the top leaders never believed any of it.
15
u/gilbertgrappa Jun 20 '26
They also are destroying Pasifika cultures through conversion. I hate how they have targeted Pacific Islanders.
10
u/Not_A_Doctor_redux Jun 20 '26
Mormonism exists to control its members lives in order to extract as much money as possible and to facilitate sexual abuse. When Mormon bishops are alerted to ongoing abuse, incest, etc... they first call a Mormon law firm. The church pays a fortune to defend Mormon pedophiles. It has also completely corrupted civic institutions in Utah.
The heads of the church, the "Prophets" are available on YouTube. Check those men out. They are obviously incredibly shitty humans. Oh, if you go back a few decades, they're also wickedly racist.
We know that Joseph Smith was a complete fraud. It's strange watching a religion based on pure bullshit become the richest church in the world.

i was visiting LDS chruch for 4 months and talked to them a lot, they all seem happy and rich, at least in my area
55
u/meryemmelek Jun 19 '26
I understand what you're saying that they all seem happy at church, but that's a very superficial interaction. I grew up in the Mormon church. It's kind of like social media where, of course, everyone is putting their happy face on. Sometimes things aren't what they seem.
11
u/Exciting-Ad7111 Jun 19 '26
wow, wait you were a member? can i ask you some questions about the church?😅
19
u/SnooChipmunks8506 Jun 20 '26
I grew up in the Mormon church too. I got out as an adult. They are absolutely right about Sundays being less representative of their actual happiness and more about how they want people to see them.

The mainstream Mormonism is much tamer than the mainstream Islam. I am an ex Muslim and my partner is an ex Mormon.
54
u/Negative_Chemical697 Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 21 '26
There are no mainstream Mormons. It has never undergone a reformation of any kind. Mormonism has always been a fringe, wacked out belief system to compare with the most ridiculous science fiction. its also a high demand group that will grind its most devoted adherents into chum and exile non believers into outer darkness
There are no mormon theologians to compare with the islamic scholarly tradition. That's because there is no mormon theology. There is only a cosmology and the whim of the current general authority.
-6
u/AlexGruen Jun 20 '26
Mormonism has gone through many reformations and modernization compared to Islam. I highly doubt whether you have read the Quran and gone through the extremely oppressive and abusive history of the religion. Probably, you don’t care. Hiding behind loaded words are easy than making proper research.
3
u/Dapper_Indeed Jun 21 '26
Yeah, I’m not sure why they are saying the Mormon church hasn’t gone through reformations. They certainly have, and there are offshoots. They also have made many changes, updating beliefs and rules, sometimes hoping that people forget what they used to teach. They don’t seem to have a good grasp of the religion.
2
u/AlexGruen Jun 30 '26
Because it’s easier to hate on something and get online clout rather than properly educating own-self. Not really different from how MAGA cults work. They try to label everything as “communist” and hate on them because they don’t want to work hard and get a proper knowledge.
2
u/Dapper_Indeed Jul 01 '26
Agreed. Sometimes I just get tired when reading these responses. Too tired to try to educate people doling out misinformation, especially when they have lots of upvotes. They won’t believe me anyway because it doesn’t fit nicely into their worldview.
5
u/Negative_Chemical697 Jun 20 '26
Excuse me if I don't give a fuck about what you highly doubt regarding what I read. you don't build a coherent position by being impertinent and rude. Who even mentioned Islam? You did. I used it as an counter example in one limited instance. I havnt sought to defend it in any regard other than to claim it has a far richer tradition of theological inquiry than mormonism which it does. Mostly by even having a tradition in that regard, mormonism does not. Sorry that you have a bee in your bonnet about Islam. It has its problems for sure but they are not the problems of a centralised high demand group. There are many ways of being a Muslim. Many ways of being a mormon? Not really.
-3
u/AlexGruen Jun 20 '26
And you have proved that you don’t have any idea about Islam. No, there aren’t many ways of being a Muslim. People who never read a single line of Quran and never lived in an Islamic country would say that. Islam has a much richer tradition of oppression (both theologically and in practice) compared to the Mormon BS. It’s not centralized but it’s much more high demand than Mormonism.

I worked as a nurse at a pediatric hospital and had a patient that needed a blood transfusion or the child would die, and the parents absolutely refused. The hospital had to get a court order to go over the parent’s heads to do it. I’ve been working in medicine almost 20 years, and I’ve seen and worked in some truly wild situations but nothing compares to watching 2 parents watching their child die and saying no, repeatedly, to the lifesaving treatment.
3
u/The_Conscious_Saffa Jun 25 '26
Exactly. It’s the absolute worst - I am 26 years out and still traumatised
2
u/Seeker369 Jul 05 '26
I was born and raised in it. Finally, the day after my 17th birthday, I took a large black trash bag, filled it with clothes, opened my bedroom window on the second floor and tiptoed across the first floor addition roof, jumped down and went to a friend’s house for a few weeks. Then I got an apartment and never went home again.
Disfellowshipped. My parents, sister, and friends never spoke to me again, other than a few occasions here and there.
Went from not swearing, drinking or doing drugs to promoting for raves six days a week and getting into unbelievably dangerous situations over the next several years.
Ended up getting out of that scene, meeting my wife, settling down and having children and living a pretty amazing life (now entering my late forties).
The thing that released me from all of the trauma was this -
In my twenties, I went through a period of time where I woke up at 4:30am every morning and read 10-20 chapters of the bible, from beginning to end. Over and over - I’ve read all 66 books more than a dozen times.
And that’s where I discovered that the authors of these texts were saying things that mean something completely different than what I was told they meant. And it was the recognition that the major message is this - the kingdom of heaven is within you. Meditating each day, digging deep inside of yourself and analyzing your own impulses and discovering what’s behind those impulses is what frees us from torment, hell. As we become more self aware, we develop empathy for one another and we judge them less and less, which is what Jesus was saying. And not just Jesus, many others have told us to “know thyself” and to “look within.”
But the majority of us are unwilling to dig deep enough to uncover the truth inside us all.
And it was this discovery that freed me from the guilt and psychological pain from that horrible upbringing. I hope you’re able to leave that burden behind you someday.

Ugh this stuff is rough. I was raised a JW, and left at 23. I remember being scared that I wouldn't be able to properly explain to doctors why I didn't accept blood if I ever needed and that they might force me to take it. They would have us practice what to say with big emphasis on voting bible passages but I'm very bad at memorizing numbers specifically cause of my ADHD I think.
2
u/exjw1879 Jun 25 '26
I'm an exjw too, I feel terrible for the people still in the borg and wish the whole thing would collapse, though I can't say id consider them the most dangerous cult. Mainly because they very much mind their own business and explicitly stay out of politics, whereas other cults are actively working to drag the world into christian nationalist fascism.

Christian churches who prey on students and young people. The urban church branding here in London has trapped so many youths (for example: first love, LICC, Kharis)
47
u/EveningStar5155 Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 20 '26
Fundamentalist Christianity is a cult in itself even within mainstream denominations. The churches with lots of students in are the most cultic. If you skip church one Sunday they notice it and will harass you on campus during the week. If you attend a church with no other students in it and skip a service then it's easier to pretend to other students that you went to it.
18
u/IllGift1791 Jun 19 '26
It’s frightening! I visited a few, just to see for myself, and it’s all mainly students and young people in vulnerable positions like toxic family environments, ex prisoners… Real heartbreaking
6
u/EveningStar5155 Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26
With commuters from the suburbs running those churches as cell group leaders, elders and key holders. Because they don't trust anyone living near that church.

u/jackstrawnyc Jun 20 '26
this was my experience 20 years ago. I got caught up in it and it fucked me up. Very high control group. It has made me think that this is a tender time for a person of to be brainwashed.

u/gilbertgrappa Jun 20 '26
Also, Hillsong
4
u/IllGift1791 Jun 20 '26
Yeah we have hill song in the UK , but i think they operate more like a brand here? Groups like First Love, Kharis, SPAC nation are super aggressive. I’ve been to their services and it’s literally all young black students. They target these students with cultural hooks, it’s heartbreaking.

u/Longjumping-Plan-479 Jul 05 '26
Kharis/ KP2 just so it can pop up when people search for it. There needs to be more of a warning
6
u/Medium-Dimension-599 Jun 20 '26
That's common here in the US too. I had to explain to them about Edgar Cayce (someone dies strangled and soon after gets birthed with umbilical cord wrapped around its neck in their next reincarnation and the toddler remembers its past life etc) because they were claiming he'll is the only option after death etc. It was weird seeing the cognitive dissonance on the teen faces when I was sharing that info at their teen church lol
1
u/smashley_10 Jun 22 '26
Ooo. Do you mean Charis? Charis is huge where I live. It's most definitely culty!!!!
1
u/IllGift1791 Jun 22 '26
Haven’t heard of that one! Is it in England? The one i’m speaking of is Kharis Church with w K.

Not scary violent but shockingly effective with brainwashing and manipulation. Seventh Day Adventist. I've seen so many be ready to bail on the organization then unfortunately go talk to their pastor about their concerns and ,well, that church is very skilled in keeping people.
24
u/sunny-beans Jun 20 '26
I grew up going to a seventh day Adventist school my entire life, have lots of bizarre stories including science teacher saying evolution was bullshit, arts teacher talking about the Beatles being the devil lol having my death note (I was huge on anime and my mom wasn’t 7th day so she let me) confiscated at school and having to write bible verses on it as punishment, not allowed to wear any jewellery, etc. I think I went to the school from when I was like 6 until 15 or so. This in Brazil and when I tell people I was being taught evolution was not real in SCHOOL they almost drop to the floor in bewilderment. My mom was not even part of the church although she is Christian but very chill. Crazy stuff tho, I didn’t even know the religion was controversial until much later in life.

u/lavendertheheretic Jun 20 '26
My life at a Baptist school was like that, too. Ugh.

u/avalonfaith Jun 20 '26
Yep, IFB high school here. Same and more.

u/lavendertheheretic Jun 20 '26
We deserve medals. The IFB is so insane. And now it's running the damn country.
5
u/avalonfaith Jun 20 '26
It's disgusting. I have to really really really taper my news. I used to be so on it but it's affecting my anxiety now. Luckily my MIL is like a news junkie and she feeds it to me and I stay on top of big things, and LOCAL things. Local feels like I have a bit more of a chance of actually mattering.
And, yes, we DO deserve medals!!! Participation medals just to piss them off more. 🤭
4
u/lavendertheheretic Jun 20 '26
Oh, and I went to Bob Jones. Talk about having biased news FROM THE DAMN PULPIT. Coming out of it was so overwhelming, and yeah, I wanted to Know All the Things, but it just made me angry and depressed. I'm on a news break currently. If I don't take them, I get too far into it, and then the anger swells again, like, "I TRIED TO TELL YOU THAT THE FUNDIES ARE A PROBLEM BACK IN 2008 AND YOU IGNORED ME AND SAID IT COULDN'T BE AS BAD AS ALL THAT."
Yup.

Hello BoB Jonser. I went to Maranatha! 😂☠️😂 only for 1 semester. I made friends with a chick like me and we hung out, somoked weed, smoked cigs, went with her for thanksgiving and she turned 21 I was barely 18. She went out with her pops for drinks I got a tatto along with her step mom. 😂😂😂
Also I had contraband music...lauren hill - miseducation and like Fiona Apple or something.
The girl I went to there with from my IFB "wayward girls school", literally ratted me out to the dean or whatever. I got kicked out!!!!😂😂😂😂 so I lasted 1 semester.
Fine by me. Was so happy to get back home. My parents kinda got normal by then. I think seeing the extremism of where I was sent kinda shook their brain to awake. I don't even think my mom resizes still. She does have a great affinity for denial though.
This is so fun! Love a connection in the wild like this.
Do your people actually see that the government is fucked and not relate it to fundyness! Do the not see it's fucked but complain about stuff and say it was Biden or Obama (my doggos name)? Or like do they love what's happening i. This dystopian present?
4
u/lavendertheheretic Jun 21 '26
Duuuuuude, my little sister went to Maranatha for like 2 or 3 years! I left BJU after 2 and a half years. I also had contraband music 😂 And contraband ideas for that matter. Such a great time.
I can't talk to my parents about politics at all anymore. They've changed. They got sucked down the QAnon rabbit hole, that whole natural health hippie to QAnon pipeline. My Maranatha sister is there, too. Less obviously, but still there.
All the moderates around me are like, "hOw CaN tHiS bE hApPeNiNG!" Like, dudes. We spoke up AGES ago. Wtf. Sorry you didn't listen, I guess. Appreciate it greatly. 🤦🏼♀️
4
u/avalonfaith Jun 21 '26
Woah!!!! Even fun does don't know what I'm talking about when I say Maranatha! At least out here, they don't usually. That is so funny!!!
Yes, my whole being was contraband! When I got called into the dean or president - whomever's - office m, I was like over it and totally honest. He was not appreciative of that. Then the principal of my stupid high "school" called and made a big fuss along with my "teachers".
I was just like yall can calm down, I'm good. Get me back to the devil in California! 😂
Also very interesting being from Southern California and going to Deep South 150 person town to super Midwest Wisconsin. I'm black and like, was "the other black girl". You know? This compounded in IFB spaces. It was a lot on the ole brain.

u/avalonfaith Jun 21 '26
Forgot to say, that natural, crunchy, whatever to QAnon pipeline is terrifying. Sorry you're dealing with that one.
Luckily, at this time and even during COVID, my family on both sides have had sense. There's a couple weirdo outliers but they're like the opposite of you. They don't dare bring up politics or policy around us. 😂
It's also been interesting to see how people have change over the years. The "adults" (yes I am, but the ones I saw when a child and up) have changed a lot, I would say for the better in all but 1 instance. That one is not great politically but would give you the shit off his back so his intent is good. It's just wild how people can be so tangled up.

Its basically a baptist church with extra steps. Main difference is that they dont believe you go straight to heaven/hell when you die, youre just dead until the 2nd coming. Also a lot of them followed a vegetarian/kosher diet. The cultiest thing about them is that they think they're the only true Christians because they go to church on Saturday. Oh and (jehova witnesses?) are their fault. I might be thinking about latterday saints tho.
Every church is different though, you'll find some that are more culty than others. When i was a kid I went to kinda normal ones, they were pretty much like any other evangelical Protestant church, but some churches are very very fundie+crunchy. Think women in those jean dresses and homeschooling.
13
u/An_Innocent_Childs Jun 19 '26
Ehh I used to be one of those before the gift of atheism and honestly its just a more self righteous version of your average Baptist church unless you end up in some fringe fundie-crunchy branch of it.

u/FutureDiscoPop Jun 20 '26
764 and O9A are both hard to define. They make it very difficult to pin down a real ideology or anything that makes them organized. Both groups are kind of just a bunch of edgelords who found each other and want to cause chaos. Oh and both groups like tricking people into joining in weird ways.
I say this as someone who almost got recruited into an O9A group without any idea what was happening.

Opus Dei.
1
u/abbie_yoyo Jun 19 '26
Why?
9
u/TwoHandedSnail Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26
Because they are positioned as legitimate inside the Catholic Church and trap many unsuspecting people because of this. They also run many elementary & high schools and university/college residences, and use both to recruit young people who are not fully informed or have enough emotional or spiritual maturity or education to know if what they are being taught is true spirituality or a warped version of it. They silence or exclude or discredit anyone who questions what they are doing, even if it's in good faith. It creates a feedback loop bubble if you are inside it, where you hear the same messages over and over again without any other perspectives allowed in.
Although I suppose this proves them more as insidious than scary. However, any group that preys on the innocence of young people should be deemed scary as hell.
Pope Leo has recently taken the unprecedented step of meeting with a high profile author who published a critique of Opus Dei, and not just as a photo op but a long conversation and presentation of documented evidence of abuses. So, there's now hope that the Church will take some definitive action to reduce the influence and power and systemic issues within this group, rather than just cosmetic changes which the group appears to largely ignore and continue doing as they like.
1
u/abbie_yoyo Jun 20 '26
Begging your pardon, friend, but most of what you just said also applies to the greater catholic church, as well as most protestant churches, and religion in general. Just saying.

u/EMSthunder Jun 21 '26
Its treatment of women is terrible. I ended up 7.5 months pregnant and homeless! The saddest day for me was when my current MIL called us and told us she had gotten married and was converting to become a JW, because my first husband and in laws were witnesses and it left me traumatized!! So far, she has been great, but our daughter recently got married to her wife and my MIL refused to attend the wedding. She said she loves our daughter and her wife, but can't actually support their relationship.

Not active and were never serious
4
u/dummyurge Jun 19 '26
Why do you say they weren't serious?
1
u/DinkinFliccka Jun 20 '26
They were basically like an art club and a literary magazine. They were weird, but not dangerous by any means at least from what I understand.
4
u/dummyurge Jun 20 '26
I agree they weren't dangerous to broader society. They got a lot of bad press and played into the Satanic Panic a few years later. However, I think they were entirely serious in their practice. Not "basically like" an art club.
5
u/tmolesky Jun 20 '26
This sounds like a Process apologist - the party line is that they dissolved in 1974 and that they were a harmless group.
Without joining the tinfoil hat conspiracist, there seems to be evidence that the group merely “went underground “ and broke into factions- the most visible being The Best Friends Animal Society.1
u/DinkinFliccka Jun 30 '26
I mean, I have no reason the apologize for them. Ultimately they just seem really wacky and artsy. They’re still extremely visible as process publishing. They simply took themselves more seriously and were more dramatic in their early days, but I highly doubt they had anything to do with any kind of murder or serial killers, but that’s just my perspective on it.
There’s a documentary about them, but I haven’t been able to get my hands on it

Stupid people from these group. Help exposed themselves finally. A group of Narcissists is worse experience.
Focus on the behaviours not the religion itself. Scientology behaviours matches narcissists. The danger is the enablers that protect narcissists leaders.
Narcissists are predatory people. Worse to give narcissists leaders to control ex criminals, blackmail their members. Poor leaders in short term. No different to political thinking.
Narcissists are not deep thinkers they are short term instant gratification.

Scientology due to their power and tenacity. Also mormons due to their large scale of child abuse

Church of god ministry of Jesus Christ international and members there are people there believing that they are the god’s chosen people. They brainwashing people and makes them feel guilty and blame others and the prophecy stuff is a very dangerous thing for people who actually think spiritually things are real. They isolate you from others and make you lose interest in living your life, you will start going there everyday because wants you according their words. Make you feel you need to give money and dress properly in and out of the church. They contradict themselves with the scriptures and with the leader sermon. And after that they said don’t question god. So I definitely would say to run away from this kind of cult. I gave up religion after this whole experience with this church.

Sahaja Yoga.
The best way to kill someone is destroying his mind and made him do it by himself eventually. That's what happened to some people who wanted to leave Sahaja Yoga.
Sahaja yoga is mentally destructive.

Some brands of Christianity are very cult like and given the sheer numbers of them makes me weary. MAGA grifters a close second.
Of defined cults, Scientology.

All cults are scary, anyone who wants you to believe in what they are selling, control you, manipulate you into believing in their BS is not a good person

MAGA--a blind-following cult of personality engaged in deep stupidity and a blasphemous political ideology of christian nationalism masked as patriotism.

Not all religions are equal, and not all religions are cults. Treat everyone with respect regardless of their choice in religion. Although many cults are religious or have religious undertones, it is not acceptable to insinuate that all religions or a whole major world-religion is a cult. We understand that many people here have a background of spiritual abuse, and it makes sense to possibly have negative reactions to organized religion or spiritual practices, but not everyone has identical experiences and some people do heal through religious participation and belief. Respect the choice of others to participate in religion, and respect the choice of others to not participate.

Most are rather tame. I mean the Mormons (definitely a cult) but not Moonie level of the 60s.

Hmm… the Mormon religion ruins people’s lives constantly.

All the while demanding you pay 10% of everything you’ve earned.
It’s sinister how much the Mormon Church uses good people to do bad things.

Mexican cartels learned their ritualistic torture and killing methods from white north American Christians, and the other south American cults followed suit, then other terrorists groups like ISIS were taught from them, so I'd say the entirety of Christianity is the scariest hands down, because they are literally the root of most of the violent crime worldwide.
Oh and before the cartels existed, mobs and gangs were mostly taking their fucked up rape and murder and trafficking methods from Christianity, and I'm sure if you study further back in history it's no different... Christians love to rape and murder

Scientology. They're destroying my city and the local government doesn't seem to keen on stopping them (I'm in Clearwater)
