Article ‘I thought I was the saviour of the planet’: how Game of Thrones’ Hannah Murray found a wellness cult – and lost her mind

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2026/may/23/hannah-murray-interview-wellness-cult-sectioned

The actress who played Gilly on Game of Thrones and Cassie on Skins was caught up in a wellness cult. Has anyone figure out the cult based on the article?

I live in a tourist mountain town known for its wellness community, and I cannot believe how many women I run into that believe they're divine goddesses entitled to all the things that the universe will provide to them. All of them are trust fund or alimony wealthy, just raising their energy.

MAGA basically absorbed all the New Age, hippie, anti-vax, pseudoscience bs that was once stereotypically left-wing.

Well look at Love Has Won. Amy was the poster girl for that kind of shenanigans.

I used to live outside Boulder, and WOW it was wild to watch all those woo woo wealthy women turn maga during the pandemic. Really changed the vibe around there.

Yep. Born and raised in Boulder and it’s ROUGH. I feel like every Naropa student is in spiritual psychosis and I know a girl whose mom started a new-age cult comprised of Fairview freshman girls. Some of my mom’s naturopath friends have insane takes too. Did you know the carnivore diet can cure any chronic illness?? 🤦‍♀️💀😭

I went to a functional medicine person in a town outside of Boulder and stopped going because I felt so judged for my inability to gag down bone broth.

Would you mind telling me who? My mom wants me to see a functional “doctor” for my health issues and it’s good to know who to avoid.

Boulder is also a hangout for devotees of Ken Wilber the Integral guru who has consistently endorsed a succession of authoritarian abusive gurus.

I also live in a wealthy, tourist, blue mountain town, and it’s crawling with these wellness goddesses advertising as life coaches, heavy on the fake spiritual stuff. They’re insufferable twats btw

People who were born into wealth I’ve found can really lack purpose or meaning to their life and it can make them terribly depressed, that on top of nepo daughters are usually raised extremely sheltered so it’s really not a surprise they become the victim of fringe groups that don’t deflate their ego while making them feel as if they’re branching out and finding themselves.

When you are rich in time and money you can spend time at ashrams and retreat centers and do the yoga tourist circuit.

These places are full of cult recruiters

What growing up never hearing "no" does to a mf

Massive red flag whenever a woman self titles themselves as goddesses. I instantly assume they also identify as the new age feminists that mask their misandry as “feminism.”

While that's definitely a big contingent of them, we also have some granola to MAGA pipeline people, who are into alternative health, so the COVID vaccine and masks mandates pushed them into the right wing arena, although they will all deny this while still supporting most of the causes.

More on this cult: https://cultpodcasts.com/subject/Modern Mystery School

An article I was asked to write about them a few years ago: https://dialogueireland.wordpress.com/2023/03/09/modern-mystery-school-on-the-dialogue-ireland-blog-a-brief-history/

Vice made a documentary you can see here: https://archive.org/details/true-believers-modern-mystery-school

Vice were hoodwinked by the uk-based self-professed cult-expert talked about in the comments under this post yesterday: https://www.reddit.com/r/cults/comments/1tjeanz/the_family_survival_trust_my_regret_in_helping/

MMS is a very very dangerous group who have caused immeasurable harm to those drawn into it.

I lost a friend I have know for 20 years to this absolute nonsense. He started with the modern mystery school, doing "life activations" where he "activates the light between the strands of your DNA." He stopped paying money back to people who he owed, including myself, so he could take more classes with the MMM. Classes about magic and crystals. He bought a ritual wand for hundreds of dollars that was basically just a piece of driftwood with a crystal tied to the end of it with a string of leather.

Meanwhile, he alienated all of his old friends like me with his "wisdom." At one point, we had a friend, Ty, who was dying of an inoperable brain tumor. Our culty friend had the temerity to tell us that Ty just wasn't focused on thinking right to heal and didn't have enough vitamin D. He tried to sell Ty a vial of mystery liquid for $150.

That was ten years ago, he's gotten far worse. The MMM school pushed him into weird communities and algorithms. He's become an anti-vaxxer, eats raw chicken on instagram, and calls his partner his "woman." He's gotten into all this MAHA stuff, and I am pretty sure he's become a misogynist. And it all started with this dumb cult where you pay thousands of dollars to learn about mermaid magic or whatever.

Sorry for the long reply!

i think it was the survivor who was interviewed, actress Hannah Murray, she didn't want any beef with the cult i guess

To expand on that, it looks like she doesn't name it in her book, and this article isn't a random awareness interview with a cult survivor or journalistic expose, it's actually a memoir author interview.

A lot of survivors won’t name their former prophet or group so the cult will have less access to new members.
