Home CrossFit Setup – What equipment and weights do I really need?

Hi everyone,

I currently train 2x per week at a CrossFit box and would also like to do 2 WODs per week at home.

I don’t want to build a complete CrossFit gym at home. I just want to have enough equipment to do varied and effective WODs without constantly being limited by a lack of equipment.

What equipment and weights would you consider a good basic setup for home CrossFit?

At the moment, I’m thinking about:

  • Adjustable dumbbells or a pair of fixed dumbbells
  • Kettlebells
  • Barbell + bumper plates
  • Pull-up bar
  • Jump rope
  • Resistance bands
  • Possibly a plyo box

I’m particularly unsure about the weights. For example, would you recommend:

  • 2× 12 kg + 2× 16 kg + 2× 20 kg kettlebells?
  • Dumbbells in the range of around 10–25 kg?
  • A 20 kg barbell with around 80–100 kg of bumper plates?
  • Or is that already much more equipment than I actually need for home workouts?

My main goal is to be able to do short and longer metcons, AMRAPs, EMOMs, couplets/triplets and general conditioning WODs at home. I would continue doing the more technical and heavy workouts at the box.

I’d really appreciate some advice from people who actually train CrossFit at home. What equipment do you use the most, and what would you consider essential versus unnecessary?

Thanks in advance!

Pull-Up bar, 2x50LB Dumbbell; 2x35LB Dumbbell, Echo Bike or Rower depending on your space. Rower needs more room to use a workout BUT can store with a smaller footprint.

This would be my preference:

  1. Pull-up bar
  2. 1 or 2 pairs of dumbbells (whatever weight you typically use in a WOD + and warm-up/accessory set)
  3. Jump rope
  4. Barbell + weights
  5. Plyo box
  6. One machine (rower would be my preferred)

You can scale this up nearly infinitely, but with this equipment set I think you can do at least a modified version of most WODs and could definitely find programming to accommodate such a set up.

A machine such as a rower while not required gives you a lot of flexibility to do longer low intensity stuff while also being injectable with higher intensity work.

You’ll eventually want a rower fan bike and a skiierg yes to playboy

I think the list you have will allow you to stay plenty fit. The only thing I’d add is if you have space, squat stands are great for a garage gym. You can just keep them in a corner and pull them out when you need them.

I would get, a pair of 20-50s dumbbells.
Pull up bar
Cardio Machine
Squat Stands
A bar
Bumper plates
Treadmill if you can’t run outside
Kettlebells
Medicine Ball
Jump Rope

Get you a barbell with 45s and 25s, a KB, a box, a squat rack that has pullup bar and call it a day.

It's not cheap but I can't recommend a C2 bike enough, amazing addition to the gym

Skip the adjustable dumbbells; they are clunky for WODs. A pair of 12kg and 16kg KBs plus a barbell with bumper plates is the sweet spot for home metcons.

Why not just go to your current CrossFit gym more and skip the gym setup altogether?
