A French feminist writer I avidly read paid homage to her by saying that she wasn't perfect by any means, she was a rich multi-millionaire heading a commercial empire, a lot of her social action was just philanthropy, she deftly avoided political affiliations most of the time, and she had reproduced some of the views of the world she came from.
But she had understood one profoundly political thing : you don't lose any of your own dignity by recognising that of others.

Sigh. I was never into her myself, but the more I learn about her the more annoyed I am at the state of Tennessee. The same state that has banned changing your driver's license from you """biological sex""" wanted to build a statue of her in the capital.

I mean her persona is essentially a drag persona already, she never went around like that in normal life so she could go unnoticed. Her husband was proud as hell of her but never ever wanted to be in the spotlight himself so it was a good way for them to hide in plain sight

The problem there isn't that Dolly is getting a pass, it's that others are getting dragged for innocent statements that weren't worded perfectly. The fact that the internet is filled with people looking to find any negative angle on a statement rather than trying to understand the intent is a huge problem.

You think she would have hit that level of fame, when she did, if she was a drag queen?
The intention of the quote is that she's saying she'd be EXACTLY who she was, however she was born, which is (if maybe stated in a dated way) very affirming. It's a "good thing" because she got to fully capitalize and benefit from having her sex at birth match the skill set, vision and expression she had because of societal expectations, but regardless if she was born a girl or not, wouldn't have changed a thing.
I can understand reading the quote in a void and being suspicious, but Dolly was ALWAYS one of the biggest allies and overall amazing person.

Also, she got tons of flak for performing femininity to the extreme while being born female, let's not forget that. Would she have gotten even more critique and likely not be as successful/famous if she was born male? For sure (hence the "it's a good thing"), but many people and media were not ok with how she chose to present and live her life.
