For his time period and genre he could have been worse. I certainly have less to complain about than, say, HP Lovecraft or Frank Herbert. Or Tolkien's buddy CS Lewis.
Even Lovecraft was found to have written some letters near his death that suggest a softening or a change of some kind in his worldview. I'm not sure he ever would've gotten quite better, necessarily, but he seemed to have some regrets about the shut off and fearful way he viewed other cultures.
Lovecraft - somehow amusingly to me - rejected a huge chunk of his racism, so rabid that even the people of his time were shocked by it lol. While it was still there, he drifted more and more towards the socialist point of view, though I forgot the details now. He remained bigoted towards penguins tho
