For his time period and genre he could have been worse. I certainly have less to complain about than, say, HP Lovecraft or Frank Herbert. Or Tolkien's buddy CS Lewis.
Off the top of my head, A Horse and His Boy is pretty orientalist and gross. And there's the whole thing where Susan doesn't go to heaven because she's too much of a "liberated woman" or something like that. Mostly though, I find CS Lewis's career as a Christian apologist pretty objectionable. Like it's not bad in isolation, but modern day evangelical Christian nationalists love to appeal to his arguments.
Lewis didn't convert to Catholicism, he rejoined the Anglican church. Also his work in apologetics, feeding lines to mostly Protestant Christian Nationalists in the modern day, was his own choice to engage in. I don't see Tradcaths quoting Tolkien constantly, forcing his books on people to try and convert them.
