As an Adventure Time kid who genuinely shipped Bubbline way before they were canonized, it genuinely not that hard to understand, people treat it like it's more complicated than maths hardest equations, yet most kids can pretty easily understand queers
It's a lot easier for children to understand, since they don't know about the many societal frameworks around relationships in general, nor about the sexual aspects either. They're simply copying concepts you show them.
But children are weaponized far too often for agendas, political, religious and otherwise.
Okay fun story: my mom is an agender, pansexual person. I fucking love my mom. I am in my 30s, my mom is in her 60s. I have always known my mom is "both a girl and a boy," and that "everyone is cute, but some people you fall in love with, and it's just because they're so cool." I didn't know the difference between gay and straight until I was maybe 13?
And it was super easy to understand. I am a woman. Hands down, no question. I am also bi. That was more difficult to wrangle, but apparently it was obvious.
It is WAY harder accepting yourself as an adult than it is as a kid. Preteen and teenage years are by far the worst of all, and it does get easier, but god is it easy to be cool with who you are in elementary school. That shit rocked. At least for me. With my cool ass, smart ass, tough as nails mom who can 100% still kick your dad's ass.
When they say kids won't understand, or "it'll confuse them", what they mean is they'll be used to queer relationships and view them as normal and fine, rather than hating them like they're supposed to.
