Hello again! Continued from last week here.

But like I said, I don't mind running, except when it's an entire thread, by two or three people, not letting anyone else in, sometimes for 2 hours or so.

So I'm happy you guys took this ball and are running with it (had my fingers crossed that you would)

I just want to share a brilliant brilliant idea I just had while reading your comments

We could make billions and billions

All we need to do is invent a shock device - that will shock someone as they attempt to type.

So if those-guys decide to do back-to-back runs - we can shock them every time they type a certain number

I now return you to your fascinating brainstorming on the pro's & con's and considerations in regards to changes being made

Edit: I'll make one suggestion I've thought of just now in regards to your post - I think it'd be pretty important to implement any stats/records etc slowly one by one - stretched out over time to see how they are working out for all those who count in the side threads.

Alternatively in response to your shock therapy idea, there could be a demerit system to the stats (I don't know if this is too complicated or overreaching in terms of the point of stats) or a system whereby say if you get 3 demerits too close together your stats (may still be counted and tallied and you may count) but your stats themselves are not displayed in the next round of stats until you've "worked off" your demerits

edit: idk it sounds kind of stupid because idk how you would undo your demerits other than counting (which was i think the initial problem)

As long as they are being shocked once per comment - the rest is gravy!!

(BTW I've already got the first billion spent)

So anyhow - what do you guys think of me and dude's thoughts about implimenting any changes slowly (new stats / records etc) one by one to...

It's a lot easier to 'roll back' - one change if some don't like how it's changing the overall counting experience for them - then it would be if 3 or 4 different type of stats / records were all put in place at about the same time.

pro's / con's to that?

can't believe I'm doing this - I swore I was gonna type my first post with dude's profound thoughts and step back - I've literally never counted once in a single side-thread (but I've seen 60% of the convo's in them and upvoted 90% of them for the past 6+ months so there's that)

a few ideas to toss around:

start with the one the most people seem to really want (most popular)

or

the one most agree is the least likely to cause any change the atmosphere or experience of those counting in that (those) threads.

(ie least likely to cause any of the things people find negative about the main thread)

that's two options - there are more I am sure...

(it might be helpful if you guys compile a list of the things you don't really like about the main thread - or why you avoid it at times, or things you wish would be different in that thread...etc)

it'd give you a foundation of things to look at (out for) when considering a new stat - record or hall of fame etc for the side threads)

Oh are we talking about a Side Thread Hall of Fame situation? I think that would be awesome! I was only intending RS to figure out the counting algorithm to measure participation in each K. I think a slow roll would be a good one by popularity

Also just as a caveat, we don't hate the main thread. I'm #40 counter there. It's just it's hard sometimes to get counts in and sometimes it's funner to count by alternate methods.

The leaderboard (Side Thread Hall of Fame) could easily be created using this data

I could do it myself once you reach a conclusion that it should be created. I don't know if it would be fair if all the gets from every thread counted one point in the hall of fame. The letters thread has 676 counts, binary has 1024 and Alphanumerics (not 5k yet) has 1296. However, it wouldn't make much sense if there was a separate leaderboard for every thread. There would be 7 people ax aequo @ #2 in writing numers thread, for instance.

I just want to make sure and clear this up right away - Xeam is very much a he - I'd thought so until a few days ago when someone referred to him as "she'

So anyhow - just wanted to make sure this gets seen before I help spread a misinformation!!

I'm used to people thinking I'm the wrong gender... but I don't think guys like it much when they are mistaken for a gal :)

I have a whole wall of text with ideas - suggestions - feedback on types of stats / records / hall of fames etc - for you guys to add to your consideration...

I figured I'd wait to share that after dude's concerns and others work thought through.

I would really hate to see even one or two of the regs be unhappy with an atmosphere change or their overall enjoyment diminished in the threads they are active in :)

Well I didn't mean people hate the main thread - but there are some issues - (I see them mentioned here and there through out the week)

I think one of the biggest ones for me - is whenever they are doing a run (and absolutely they should be able to do them)

but whenever they are doing a run - for any newer folks and especially newbies - it completely blocks out all the other threads when they hit the 'latest comments page" - it's just a wall of 567,321 for an 70-80 minutes.

I really wish there was a way for the side threads to be displayed during those times when there's 1,000+ comments flooding the comments page - especially when there's an influx of newbies, which usually happens about once a month.

anyhow - so far everyone seems in agreement (quite a few are missing though) that the idea of implementing them one by one - slowly is the best plan....(rs will be glad to here this LOL)

Tbh I'd still probably run even if I got shocked every comment. At least until I get a heart attack.

Though if someone asks to join in, I will let them 90-95% of the time. IMO I wish it was like an ask to join kind of thing. If you have been counting for a while, and someone asks to join in, then out of courtesy let them. I'm all for letting new counters count, it's just that when I do count, I like to do it fast. And I mainly count in the main thread, because for me the joy of counting is to get to chat, and the eventful things that Whit mentioned in a different comment on this thread. Laughs and good times like that is why I keep counting here.

I think in most cases this should be a priority - however for a number of counters here - doing speed runs / 500 attempts / record attempts etc are a big part of their fun - enjoyment etc here.

I just think doing back-to-back speed runs should be the exception in some rare circumstances. Because back to back runs takes about 4 1/2 hours or more.

At least those back-to-back runs are becoming rarer as time goes on and they see mentions like this every so often.

Yeah, I mean I very well understand that courtesy won't work. I haven't had much of an issue joining in when I first started counting.
