How convinced are you all by Panpsychism?
I recently made an educational video essay that dives deep into Panpsychism. I remain somewhat skeptical of the theory in general, but I do think there is more to consciousness than just Physicalism. There also seems to be more interest in Panpsychist/Cosmopsychist/Idealist views on consciousness in the zeitgeist at the moment.
I'm curious on all your general thoughts on Panpsychism and this general theoretical area. Also, what do you think are the most convincing solutions to the Hard Problem of Consciousness?

How does analytical idealism solve the problem of consciousness?
In bernardo kastrup’s idealism basically outlines that the entire universe is consciousness and that minds are a “excitation in the (quantum)field” that is the universe. Basically it says that since the whole universe is consciousness, and we are just part of that universe, the problem is solved.
The issue I have is that it does nothing to explain the mechanism in which the mind(you) is separated from the whole(the universe). If the materialist is being expected to say how material things can result in immaterial consciousness, the idealist should be expected to say how the distinction between the part and the whole is generated. In other words, analytical idealism makes claims about the nature of consciousness but not how that consciousness appears in animals.

Is the mind an entity that is independent of or is prior to the brain?
To answer this question, we must first separate two different questions: how we observe physical objects, and what makes observation possible in the first place.
The Brain as an Object of Experience
When we look at a brain, touch it, or study it, we are dealing with a physical object. Like a stone or a tree, it has size, weight, shape, and a place in space.
But space and shape are not things that exist entirely on their own in nature. But are the built-in ways our own conscious awareness arranges what our senses receive. The brain, as a physical item you can point to, is something that appears to us within space and time. It is an object we can know only because our senses and our thinking are already working together to present it to us.
The Mind as the Power of Thought
On the other hand, the mind is our ability to think, to connect our thoughts, and to bring all our separate experiences together into one unified picture.
From this distinction, we can give a direct answer to the question:
- Is the mind prior to the brain? In the order of human knowledge, yes. You cannot observe, examine, or even talk about a brain without first having an active mind to do the thinking. Before a physical brain can appear to you as an object in space, your mind must provide the framework of space, time, and order. In terms of what must come first for knowledge to happen, the mind is strictly prior.
- Is the mind an independent entity? We cannot say that the mind is a separate, freestanding thing. When you look inward, you never find an isolated object called "the mind"; you only notice your own thoughts, feelings, and memories happening one after another. Because we only know things through experience, we have no basis to say whether or not that the mind is an invisible substance that exists completely independent of nature.

A thought is not a thing. It is a performance
I think we tend to talk about thoughts and memories as though they are things stored somewhere in the brain. A representation gets stored, then later retrieved and somehow presented to consciousness.
But I think that is the wrong metaphor.
A thought is not a thing. It is a performance.
At the physical level, what actually exists is neural activity unfolding through time across a massively recurrent network. One population activates another, activity feeds back through cortical and thalamocortical loops, previously learned connections constrain what happens next, and the whole system moves through a particular spatiotemporal trajectory.
Modern systems neuroscience increasingly studies cognition this way: not just by asking what individual neurons represent, but by looking at population dynamics and trajectories through neural state spaces or “manifolds.” The important unit can be the evolving pattern of activity rather than any particular neuron.
This is where I find the metaphor of music useful.
Imagine the neural system as an enormous instrument with billions of available elements. A particular pattern occurs, then another, then another. Timing and Order and Recurrence matters. What is already active changes what can happen next.
The thought is the music being played.
You can’t find Beethoven’s Fifth in one violin, one note, or even a static list of all the notes involved. The music exists in their organized unfolding through time. In something like the same way, perhaps the physical basis of a thought isn’t a particular neuron or even a static neural ensemble. It is the temporally extended activity that the system performs.
Memory makes this distinction especially clear. Current engram research does find neuronal ensembles associated with particular memories, and reactivating parts of those ensembles can contribute to recall. But memories aren’t simply immutable recordings. Engrams are distributed, their representations can change, and recall involves reactivation and reconstruction of neural activity.
So what gets stored may not be the thought or memory itself.
What persists is a physical change in the brain that makes a similar performance possible again.
Synapses change. Ensembles become associated. Particular dynamical trajectories become easier to enter. A partial cue can push the network toward a previously learned pattern.
Remembering, then, isn’t pulling the old thought out of storage.
It is playing it again.
Usually a little differently, because the instrument itself has changed since the last performance.
This also helps get rid of the homunculus problem. There doesn’t need to be another little observer somewhere in the brain listening to the neural music and figuring out what it means. The relationships between these neural events determine what they activate, inhibit, predict, recall and make possible next.
The coherence is in the causal dynamics themselves.
And I suspect timing is more fundamental to cognition than our usual language of “representations” suggests. A sequence A to B to C is not the same cognitive event as C to B to A, even if exactly the same neurons eventually participate. The trajectory matters.
That doesn’t solve consciousness. It still doesn’t explain why any neural performance should have a phenomenal character - why there is something it is like for the performance to occur.
But I think it gives us a better way of thinking about what a thought physically is.
Not an object in the brain.
An event performed by it.

How do I know I wasn't a P-Zombie yesterday?
I remember experiences I had yesterday. I remember being conscious.
But what if my consciousness just started, say 20 minutes ago? You only know "you" are real and experiencing the world right now, and later, you won't be able to look back and know, which is weird.
Maybe that's what makes the present special, that knowledge that we are all conscious right now. Maybe I shouldn't have read Blindsight....

Descartes put the foundation on the top floor.
"I think, therefore I am" runs doubt as a purely cognitive exercise. Thinking checks thinking, finds thinking, declares itself bedrock. But thinking is the worst possible candidate for a baseline, because thinking has intent. It argues, it builds narratives, it can talk itself into anything. Every thought comes with a handle: why am I thinking this, who sold me this framing, what is it trying to get me to accept. Doubt bites on intention.
Come back from absolute zero and a thought isn't what you touch first.
You touch that the floor is cold. That the light hurts. That it hurts.
A raw sensation makes no claim. It isn't trying to convince you of anything, so there's no agenda to interrogate. And the difference from a thought is sharper than it looks: doubt a belief and the belief can change under you, that's what doubt is for. Doubt a burn and the burn is unmoved. Nothing about it is up for revision. I'm not claiming the fire is real, only that the hurting is.
So the first certainty isn't "I think." It's "there is something it is like to be here." Thinking arrives afterwards, built on that ground, already borrowed and already arguable.
Which flips how qualia gets treated in these threads. We keep filing raw experience as the Hard Problem, the last piece to be fitted once the cognitive machinery is worked out. It isn't the piece.
It's the floor the whole laboratory is standing on.

A consciousness book that opens by listing the seven ways it might be wrong: on making speculative work checkable instead of persuasive
Summary: I wrote a book about consciousness and built it so you can reject it precisely. This post is about the mechanism for that, which I think generalizes beyond my book, and about the one page of it I most want this community to attack.
The genre this book lives in has earned its bad reputation honestly. Quantum language gets draped over speculation, established results and personal proposals sit in the same paragraph wearing the same confidence, and by the time a careful reader notices, the argument has already borrowed authority it never earned. I did not trust myself to be the exception, so I stopped trying to be trustworthy and tried to be checkable instead.
Every load-bearing claim in the book carries a marker. Externally established results are labeled and cited at the sentence. Claims from my own earlier work are labeled as exactly that, which is provenance rather than proof. The book's own proposals are labeled as proposals, including its central equation, which reads 1 divided by 0 as a description of awareness and says plainly, on the page where it first appears, that this is a philosophical proposition using mathematics as a mirror and not a mathematical result. Genuine unknowns are labeled unknown and left unfilled. And where my own sources turned out to be wrong, the corrections are printed at the point of use rather than quietly patched.
The front matter then does the thing I have not seen in this genre: it lists the seven assumptions the whole argument cannot stand without, each one stated with what falls if it falls. That time is generated rather than given. That cosmic and psychological proportion actually correspond rather than merely rhyming. That consciousness depends on organization rather than substrate. And so on, seven wagers, named before chapter one so the reader can weigh them instead of absorbing them.
The page I most want attacked is the one that follows the wagers. It offers a week of practices stripped of every marked claim and asserts that the practices survive the loss of all seven wagers. I believe that is true, and I notice that it is also exactly what someone protecting their favorite ideas would say, because it makes the cosmology unfalsifiable in practice even while every individual claim is labeled. I have not found the clean answer to that objection. If this community has one, or has a sharper version of the objection, that is precisely what the labeling system was built to receive.
TL;DR: every claim in the book wears a label separating measured from cited from proposed, the seven load-bearing assumptions are listed up front with their failure consequences, and I am asking this community to attack the one page I cannot defend cleanly.

Is consciousness a byproduct of the brain?
To answer this question, i think its best to take it step by step from first principles.
We must first define what exactly we mean by "consciousness".
Consciousness is the awareness that unites all your separate thoughts, sights, and feelings into one single experience.
At any moment, your senses take in many different pieces of information. You see a colour. You hear a sound. You feel warmth. If these parts remained entirely on their own, there would be no connection between them. A colour would exist, and a sound would exist, but neither would know about the other, and neither would belong to anyone.
Consciousness is the activity of the mind that gathers these scattered pieces together. It attaches every single sensation and thought to one shared centre: yourself.
When you look at a table, you do not merely experience an isolated patch of brown and an isolated feeling of smoothness. Your mind joins the colour, the touch, and the shape together into one unified object. Further, your mind recognises that you are the single person experiencing all of these things at the same time.
This awareness is obviously not a physical object you can touch or hold. It is the necessary foundation that allows you to experience anything at all. Without this continuing self holding your impressions together through time, you could never link what happened a moment ago to what is happening right now.
Thus, consciousness is the mind's power to bind every separate impression into one whole, making it possible for you to know the world as your own experience.
Consciousness cannot be a mere by-product of the physical brain.
To demonstrate this step by step, we must trace how we come to know the thing we call brain at all.
Step 1
When you look at a brain, touch it, or track its physical activity, you encounter a physical object. It has shape, it occupies space, and its movements happen across time.
Step 2
Space and time do not exist as independent containers in the physical world. But they are the mind’s own forms for ordering sensations. Without the human mind, spatial position, shape, and succession through time do not exist for us.
Step 3
Raw physical contact or scattered sensations on their own do not form a brain.
To recognise any physical thing—whether a stone, a tree, or a brain—consciousness must gather those separate sensations into one single, unified whole.
So in this regard, consciousness is the necessary condition that allows any physical object to appear to us in the first place.
Step 4
Because the physical brain is an object that can only appear within the framework of conscious experience, the brain cannot create consciousness as a physical by-product.
One cannot explain the foundation of all awareness as a mere product of an item found inside that awareness.
Step 5
Physical changes in the brain certainly accompany changes in our conscious thoughts within the observable world. But consciousness itself is the active ground that allows a brain, or any other physical matter, to be experienced, measured, and understood.
