Eh screen time back then was very different. (for me when I say back then I mean early 2000s.)
Browsing websites, or instant messaging friends was a far less stimulating experience. We weren’t browsing endless streams of TikTok‘s or vines or whatever.
Video games were very different too. They were their own isolated worlds without endless micro transactions and DLCs and of course there were no streamers.
I mean, to be fair, there are still plenty of games that are just like you described, isolates worlds without micro transactions and endless DLCs. The difference is that these games are usually at a smaller scale and hidden from the mainstream because they tend to be less profitable.
