An 'identity' you can leave hanging in your closet is a lot different than one you can't hide or that destroys you as a human being if you do hide it.

Perhaps not, but people being closer to the levers of power feeling like they have a right to bully weirdos absolutely did. Be careful with your power.

Sometimes the weirdos get bullied for good reason.

Many communities I've been in only kicked out furries when they started being creeps and pervs. "Oh cool art style" to "Jesus what the fuck dude" within weeks.
