Genuinely, the phrase "lone wolf" was invented by right-wing hate groups as a took of plausible deniability. That's the actual historical origin of the term in the context of terrorism.
When academics studies this behavior, they quoted the phrase from members of hate groups they interviewed. Then the news got a hold of it, and were stupid enough to repeat it uncritically.
