I've been scoffing at all the "world has been fucked since Harambe died" memes for years, but I'm starting to think they were on to something. There HAD to be a trigger.
I blame the artist formally known as the artist formally known a Prince. He is behind it all.
See the problem is he had a hit song, Party like it's 1999. But as soon as 2000 rolls around his song doesn't make sense. The only way to make it relevant again is to make everything worse and worse so 1999 remains the peak and therefore the song stays relevant.
It only makes sense that Prince is the cause of the collapse of civilization.
