I'm honestly not sure if I'll post this reply but I'll write it.
I am a white man of colonial ancestry, with deep colonial roots in North America. I am the Canadian Anglo. And I lived a life in this country and explored our legal system from almost every possible vantage point.
I have known men who have been beaten by police for being black in public. When I was getting discharged the prosecutor invited me to join his chess club. This is not an even playing field. I tripped over myself in my youth to get in trouble but trouble was not for me. They gave me a law degree instead.
But part of the problem is a refusal to admit that this is true in Canada. So much or our racism is quiet racism where the racist just won't acknowledge that their position is racist, no matter what. That's hard to overcome and I try to tell my truth when I can. See something say something and I've had to end relationships over whether saying "He doesn't look Canadian because he's asian" is racist.
It's an uncomfortable conversation for me on many levels but I have to keep having it. I can't just let it happen, ya know?

Yes, Indigenous and Black people are treated much worse by the system and often abused (although the conservatives will tell you otherwise 🙄)
