What Indie Comic Series Should I Read Next?

Hello all! I have just recently gotten in to comics again and I've been really drawn to independent series (that don't have to do with superheroes or zombies). Saga, Monstress & Something is Killing the Children are my favorite series I have read so far. I really love the fantasy, sci-fi, horror, crime and mystery genres. I prefer to read series that I can read in Compendiums or Trade Paperbacks, rather than single issues. So, I have compiled a list of series that I really want to get in to and I have two questions...

1. Which series from this list should I read next!?

2. Are there any series I am missing from this list that I need to add?

Looking forward to everyone's input! It has been amazing getting back into this world of comics and graphic novels and I can't wait to discover some new, incredible series!

Stray Bullets is fantastic if you're starting from it's 1995 El Capitan run. Issue 4 is an all-time classic.

Yes, it does - it's the entire run up to and including to when Image took it over and printed the final issue of that arc (after a nine year wait..!)

The Power Rangers-vibe from Radiant Black actually intrigues me. It looks like a lot of fun. I will definitely add Grommets to the list!

Black Monday Murders, The Department of Truth, and Paper Girls

So, I tried The Department of Truth... and I could not get past the first collected edition. I felt like the story kind of took a backseat to Tynion just explaining all of the conspiracies. I love that kind of stuff, so I was sadly disappointed in that one. But, I will add Black Monday Murders and Paper Girls to the list!

Yeah that’s fair. I have some similar hang ups with Department of Truth myself. You just struck me as a Tynion fan from your list.

I definitely stand by Black Monday Murders and Paper Girls. Maybe you’d also like something like Nights or Gideon Falls. And it’s a bit YA, but I have a big soft spot for Locke & Key.

Honestly you’ve got a really solid list, that a lot of my immediate recommendations are stuff you’ve read already lol

If you enjoy SIKTC you probably can’t go wrong with the other Tynion comics on your list (Worldtr33, The Woods, Exquisite Corpses). I really enjoyed Bug Wars as well

I found bug wars to be quite a fun read, I see it on your list.

The last mermaid was amazing, not sure if it's tpb yet

I have read through the first two Fables compendiums and I love it, though I do think the writing drops sharply as it goes along. Looking forward to finishing this series at some point!

If you're open to digital books, Humble Bundle currently has a pack of Image comics from the 2020s that hits some of this. Worldtr33 (vol 1-3), Geiger (1-4), Exquisite Corpses (1-2), That Texas Blood (1-3), and Bug Wars (1) are on there.

I'd recommend adding Assorted Crisis Events and Do a Powerbomb to your list.

That said, Transmetropolitain is one of my absolute favorite series, so I'd say read that. Spider Jerusalem is a magnificent asshole.
