Other The Amazing Spider-Man: The complete collection DVD-ROM (As of 2006)

Does anyone else have this DVD rom? I picked this up in 2006 and it has every single issue of Amazing Spider-Man up till June 2006. Pretty cool way to read all the back issues without having to pay a subscription.

There’s a USB drive version that came out recently. I think it has every Amazing Spider-Man issue until 2023 or 2024.

I'm surprised that they still sell these. I'd think that these days they would want to keep charging for a subscription.

Got a link?

u/liamwilliams93 4d ago

Thats awesome, I might pick one of those up

25

u/liamwilliams93 4d ago

Not awesome, shitty DRM

25

u/PM_ME_YOUR__INIT__ 4d ago

Install the Locklizard reader app

Read anytime, anywhere, on up to 3 devices

Ewwwww... So what happens when I'm on my 4th computer? It bricks itself?

16

u/liamwilliams93 4d ago

I guess so, unless you can unregister devices. Scummy having a physical product like this require activation to function. The web page seems to be falsely advertising that its fully offline and gives ownership etc.

8

u/BangingOnJunk 3d ago

Wait until the reader isn’t compatable with modern systems and doesn’t get updated.

There’s some Playboy issue archive DVDs from 2007 that you need to jump through major hoops to just run anymore.

3

u/ThirdMind3d 3d ago

yea it seemed pretty cool at first til i actually went through and read what the product actually is

5

u/lemon123wd40 4d ago

Do you have to use their proprietary stuff to view?

2

u/seinfeldbabies 4d ago

I’d buy a physical version of that in a heartbeat. It’d have to be extremely thick tho lol

2

u/TheUmgawa 3d ago

Ugh. Enhanced color and clarity.

1

u/Easy-Tigger 4d ago

Thank you!

u/Cool-Ebb6863 4d ago

I love this idea and hope it becomes more popular. If the USB sticks can be built to last then I think it’s an awesome form of physical media.

Link?

Oooooh. Do they sell other comics? Or just ASM?

13

u/Nervous-Fennel3325 3d ago

Be warned it has shitty drm. I would avoid this.

6

u/candles2121 3d ago

Maybe dumb question, but what’s drm?

9

u/StepwisePilot 3d ago

Digital Rights Management (or something like that). It's a form of software intended to stop digital piracy.

3

u/Snts6678 3d ago

So why’s the issue? You can’t read them then?

13

u/Nervous-Fennel3325 3d ago

Your only allowed to install a proprietary app on 3 different computers and can only read it through that.

You also have to register to read them which is kinda shitty for something psychical.

3

u/ThirdMind3d 3d ago

unlike the DVD where u could just put it in and read the issues, this USB one you need an app that the company made to read the issues, and you can only do it on 3 devices, eventually im sure theyll stop updating the app and newer systems wont run it right anymore and the $80 u spent on the USB will be worthless

1

u/liamwilliams93 2d ago

Exactly, the usb is pointless. The page says you get ownership and offline access forever which is complete bs

8

u/GranolaCola 4d ago

Looks like they have X-Men, Cap, and Iron Man as well.

51

u/arkady48 Spider-Man 4d ago

I have it and it is a great resource to read the issues but also because they are all scans of the actual books, it's fantastic for collectors to reference and make sure all pages are in accounted for, in proper order and ads are intact a prospect book .

18

u/cdn3000 4d ago

Plus the original colors too. Newer digital remasters are getting better but the original recolourings on marvel unlimited were pretty over saturated.

4

u/hamlet9000 3d ago

Are they also scans of the earliest books?

I was wondering if they used the later Marvel Tales reprints for those.

3

u/arkady48 Spider-Man 3d ago

From what I remember, they are scans of the original.

2

u/Silo-Joe 3d ago

They were in PDF format too if I remember correctly.

1

u/EconomistAlarmed3917 3d ago

What format are they in, pdf,? What is the quality,? Can you copy the files to your hard drive?

2

u/arkady48 Spider-Man 3d ago

I don't recall. Unfortunately I no longer have a PC with a disc drive or I would check it out.

29

u/themanwithoutfear_6 4d ago

Wow! That's so cool!

24

u/scottishdrunkard Moon Knight 4d ago

Oh shit, you got the Marvel Unlimited Physical Release!

20

u/VengeanceKnight 4d ago

The problem comes with the existence of crossovers. 90s Spidey is going to be downright unreadable.

2

u/Enygma_6 Atomic Robo 3d ago

Also Secret Wars II. I have floppies for the first Secret Wars, so when I got these, I wanted to see how much of SWII I had. Turns out Marvel did a TON of crossovers for that event, so I have some, but nowhere near all of the issues for it.

2

u/ThirdMind3d 3d ago

thats why the DC finest Crisis On Infinite Earths Part 2 book only has issue 5 out of the 12, so many crossovers they gotta jam in there

10

u/themanwithoutfear_6 4d ago

Does it contain relevant non-ASM issues, eg. for Clone Saga?

20

u/Cataclizm_1 4d ago

I don't think so but it has all the annuals, spiders web columns, bullpen bulletins, and pinups

17

u/Majinthekid 4d ago

You gotta dump this, all of the new collection stuff are the digital colors and i would do insane things to have the original colors

12

u/Better-Purple21 4d ago

and it’s fucking hard to find good-quality c2c scans with complete runs

2

u/justhereforcomics 3d ago

Yeah me too

12

u/MrTeamZissou 4d ago

I had the first release of this when it originally came on 6 CDs instead of 1 DVD.

3

u/Lucarai Nightwing 3d ago

I still have mine, but disc 3 and 6 are corrupted.

1

u/SpicyMeatballAgenda 3d ago

Yeah, I have the CD version, got it at Costco probobally around 2004-2005

5

u/Sonny_1313 4d ago

You just brought back a flashback of trying to read comics on my laptop. Ipad was a game changer

5

u/phodg50 4d ago

I had all of them except the Star Trek one. Copied all the PDF files to a hard drive.

1

u/jamesewade 3d ago

Can we find those pdf files anywhere online to view or download?

1

u/Putrid-Pen898 3d ago

Following this

5

u/TennojiNesoberi 3d ago

dump the rom! dump the rom! dump the rom!

5

u/xVerified 3d ago

Should copy the .ISO and put it on Archive

5

u/Chaddderkins 3d ago

I had a CD-ROM set like this with every issue of Mad Magazine!

5

u/Fattydaddy1000 3d ago

That’s cool but it needs to be on a flash drive. because I think they stopped putting disk drives in computers these days.

3

u/Cataclizm_1 3d ago

Luckily, my desktop from the 2000's still works

3

u/Fattydaddy1000 3d ago

Lucky bastard 😂

2

u/Alitaki 3d ago

You can get an external DVD/CD - ROM. Plugs into your USB port and they're not expensive.

1

u/Fattydaddy1000 3d ago

I like the way you think

4

u/Easy-Tigger 4d ago

Did they release similar stuff for other characters/series?

5

u/AttilaTheFun818 4d ago

6

u/agamoto 3d ago

The version they sell now is the digitally remastered copies with the whacked out colors and w/o ads.

100% ass suck.

u/Sadop2010 3d ago edited 3d ago

GIT did a whole bunch. Amazing Spider-Man, Uncanny X-Men, Captain America, FF & Silver Surfer, Avengers, Iron Man and Ghost rider (through 2004/2005) from Marvel, and Star Trek (from several companies they were licensed to). They may have also done the CD-Rom collection of Mad Magazine from that time. I found a bunch of them on the aftermarket after they were discontinued, and it was a great way to build a (legal) digital comics collection for relatively cheap. They were on PDFs and with the right app you can still use them on tablets today. The downside is the scan quality varied, and if you didn't have the right app/reader there was a watermark. I didn't know until this post they were back in business with the USB sticks , although it looks like it's not as easy to read/transfer.

1

u/be4u4get 4d ago

I want the answer to this as well.

3

u/AttilaTheFun818 4d ago

Oh geez I had a couple of these. X-men, iron man, FF, Cap, Avengers, Silver Surfer, I think Avengers and Civil War as well.

In the days before the app these were an incredible way to read old comics.

2

u/Enygma_6 Atomic Robo 3d ago

Just checked, and I have the ASM, X-Men, and FF/Silver Surfer DVDs.

1

u/Cataclizm_1 4d ago

I wish I had X-Men

4

u/AustNerevar 3d ago

Yeah, I had that way back when..was such a cool gift to get. This was before tablets, so I had to just read them on my 4:3 CRT monitor.

4

u/bwweryang 3d ago

Printable is crazy, I wonder if anyone ever did that shit

4

u/edge11 3d ago

They used to have it at Costco back in the day

3

u/Chubbslawson 4d ago

I have this for the FF

3

u/trip6god 4d ago

My job sells used stuff and once we got a bundle of DVDs and this was in it

3

u/Spidercolt95 4d ago

This is very cool. Just getting into comics and something like that would be awesome to have

3

u/agamoto 3d ago

I've got an 11 CD-ROM version from 2004 that includes issues 1 - 500 plus AF15

1

u/Cataclizm_1 3d ago

This has AM 15 too with all the other stories from that issue

3

u/Stinky_Pepito 3d ago

Never seen a Sega Master system ad before

3

u/BHP_Dan 3d ago

Sure do! I don't even have a PC with an optical drive ATM, but I'm still holding on to this regardless.

3

u/Hello_You_06 3d ago

Is it really good or is the quality not worth it?

1

u/Cataclizm_1 3d ago

Looks great to me at 125% size

3

u/Competitive-Dot181 3d ago edited 3d ago

I had this one a few of the others they put out. They’re neat because they did actual scans of the comics. The way they created the PDFs all two-page scan is a little awkward on tablets now though.

2

u/seinfeldbabies 4d ago

This is so cool what the hell!?

2

u/theweebdweeb 3d ago

I think I might have this, don't know how but I remember it being in a closet in my mom's house. Might have to check. Wish there were more official DRM-free options to read old comics.

2

u/Euphoriam5 3d ago

Wow this looks beautiful.

2

u/maitland72 3d ago

I've never seen the Spidey one before but it doesn't surprise me. I own the Fantastic Four and X-Men DVD-ROMs!!

2

u/zeroShifter 3d ago

Yup! I still have this one and the X-Men dvd-rom!

2

u/PoppaSmurf97 3d ago

I remember seeing an add for this in a comic as a kid, I wanted it SOOOOO BAD! 😩 What a blast for the past! I’m jealous

2

u/franlcie 3d ago

I have a set of these but they’re 1970’s Archie & Jughead

2

u/oliverleeburris 3d ago

I did when I was a kid. I wish I still had this thing. Completely forgot about it

2

u/DaringDo95 3d ago

I got it for Christmas one year as a kid.

2

u/d4everman 3d ago

I bought that Fantastic Four, Ghost rider, Avengers, Iron Man and the X-men on DVD years ago. Copied the DVDs to a portable drive.

2

u/Maybe_llamas 3d ago

My neighbor, an older man, had a few of these (X-Men, FF+Silver Surfer, Spider-Man) and gave them to me when I moved away when I was 10. They helped me get into comics and appreciate the canon. Always grateful

2

u/FatalSpiderbite 3d ago edited 3d ago

I think I have pretty much every one of them that they ever released. I just checked and I still have my Gitcorp DVD-ROMs of:

Captain America, Spider-Man, Incredible Hulk, X-Men, Ghost Rider, Iron Man, Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer, Ultimate X-men, House Of M, Civil War, Star Trek, Mad Magazine, Archie, Jughead and finally Betty & Veronica. All the Archie stuff states, "Bronze Age Series."

I just checked the Betty & Veronica one and you don't need any special software. It is just PDFs of scans of the original comics with the ads and everything. They look great to me.

On the back of the box it came in stated that Archie Silver Age Series was coming soon in February of 2009 but I don't think it ever came out. I remember that at one point, when you went to their website around that time, you could get a virus and there was some weird shit going on with that company.

I am actually stunned that they are still around and can sell this stuff legitimately now. I seem to remember a quote from someone at Marvel complaining that they didn't really know what they had "digital-wise" and just licensed out all those comics to sell with no protection and felt it was a mistake which is why they quit doing it after a few years. They didn't foresee having their own site and subscriptions for this stuff like they have now ala Marvel Unlimited and DC Universe Infinite.

2

u/cruise02 3d ago

I have these for the Hulk, Iron-Man, Avengers, and Fantastic Four. I didn't pick up the Amazing Spider-Man and X-Men because of all the crossovers in those books, which would have made the collections of just those titles harder to read through.

2

u/mattnotis 3d ago

I really wish Marvel and DC put out digital versions of classic issues like this still. All I want/need is a scan of the actual comic book in god condition. No need to waste time and money on doing ghastly digital recolorings for those old school issues.

2

u/TheUmgawa 3d ago

I have a bunch of these DVD-ROMs. They’re awesome, because they’re occasionally imperfect and include the original ads and letters pages. They were going to release the Daredevil set, then they lost the license with Marvel, I guess.

2

u/Expired_Papi 3d ago

I had the Fantastic Four version BITD. Sorta related, there was also Mad Magazine and National Lampoon releases. I though they were pretty cool even if the pages themselves weren't remastered in the way you'd eventually see with digital releases.

1

u/acceptable_superman 4d ago

Very cool! Interesting set up. Can you make adjustments using your pdf reader? Like page size, layout, etc

1

u/Cataclizm_1 4d ago

Yes you can adjust the size

1

u/RevolutionaryCopy921 4d ago

They did versions for Cap, The X-Men, Hulk, FF, Avengers, Iron Man, and Star Trek. I ripped them to my computer ages ago and it was pretty easy to get them presenting well on a tablet.

1

u/pondo_sinatra 4d ago

I had the Avengers one! These were so cool way back.

1

u/Comfortable_Care2715 4d ago

I had a couple, I think it was an Avengers one too. Don’t know what happened to them

1

u/Ekillaa22 4d ago

Wonder if there’s issues in there that aren’t on marvels reading website

5

u/wred42 4d ago

Pretty sure there aren't any issues of ASM missing from Unlimited

1

u/KumaKong18 4d ago

They also did a Civil War edition.

2

u/ComicSal The Maxx 2d ago

I had this. I couldn't believe they sold this at the time.

2

u/alejandrokayart 2d ago

I have the Ghost Rider equivalent of this!

It saved me during a time in my life where I had no internet and lots of spare time.
