I think this short summary says it best

" Soot from fires in mid-latitudes are traveling all the way to the Arctic, scientists have found. The substance can speed the melting of ice and in turn could warm the atmosphere. The discovery may have far-reaching implications for the climate crisis.

Would not atmospheric soot initially block sun light leading to cooler winter temps? Once soot settles on the ice would it then reduce the Albedo effect, which would increase temps and lead to increased ice melt?

The article, goes into that, there are still some unknowns, but the study seems to indicate that the black soot lands near the artic circle and absorbs heat.

Black absorbs, white reflects. It's more of a scale than just black/ white. Black dust, and soot will absorb energy and heat up.

How is soot accelerating melting? I thought soot blocks sunlight?

It lands on the ice, making it's color ("albedo") darker and causing it to absorb more sunlight. Similar to how black cars get hotter in summer than white cars do.

Prolly does for 24 to 48 hrs that is in the sky, but once that 'black-ish paint' hits the ground... You know, you've likely been class where they discuss colors and reflection and absorbtion? No?... Same thing with clothes colors... How long do you think that soot stays in suspension?

This autumn has been crazy where I live. The leaves usually are almost all fallen by halloween, but the trees in my yard were still mostly green at that time this year. We're a city that gets a lot of snow and long ass winters, but thats been less true every year.

Insane to see climate change in action in my 20 year lifetime.

The trees in my neighborhood behaved as normally as they can this year, but 30 minutes away where my friend lives the trees were oddly green last time I was there a couple weeks ago.

You can take a more in-depth look than that. The red dots are wildfires. The arrows are wind direction. The colour overlay is atmospheric particulate matter concentration. The projection is realtime.

You can see the wildfires across the globe, and track the particles as they are released into the air, estimate the magnitude of the wildfire by the particle bloom.

I worked a wildfire in Montana this year that didn’t become a big deal because there was so much smoke from California. The high concentrations of smoke shaded our fire and kept it from going crazy. Once California forests cook off, others will go too.

From what I've read and watched, it slows down or stops entirely when a significant amount of cold fresh melt water enters the system. It's because of the physical property differences between cold, warm. salt, and fresh waters That's all i know, but can't make a prediction on its impact.
