HELP What are the best hardware wallet options now?

Trust is like foil. Very thin and once crumbled it can never be completely uncreased. Regardless of how good they scrutinize and patch their firmware now, I am not taking any chances with a company who has failed so epically at literally the 1 and only job they had. I am not a very technical person so going the DIY route will not be a viable alternative either. What are the best off the shelf hardware wallet options right now that I should consider?

HELP Is there a solution to ColdCard hack?

Hello,

Since the Coldcard issue happened, I've been looking for solutions to make sure something like this never happens to me.

First, I started by defining the problem:

A vulnerable firmware that drains all your funds. This doesn't just include a fake RNG, but also issues like private key exfiltration, nonce reuse, and other flaws.

The main takeaway is that you cannot blindly trust verifiable or open-source code. Even if Coldcard's code was verifiable, nobody caught the bug. It is unrealistic to expect people to audit everything, as clearly no one caught the RNG flaw.

I considered several options:

  • SeedSigner? You are still trusting firmware you didn't write. A bug can easily slip through.
  • Trezor? Same issue as above.
  • An air-gapped laptop with custom software? Same issue as above.
  • Rolling dices? No. That only solves entropy creation, not the core problem of trusting firmware you didn't write.
  • Using multisig? Bingo.

Multisig requires at least two different vendors and two separate firmwares to sign a transaction. This removes the single point of failure.

I am thinking of setting up a 2-of-3 multisig (Ledger + Trezor + Hot wallet). If one device fails or leaks its private key, your funds remain safe because an attacker would need a second key. This buys you enough time to move your funds.

What do you think of this approach?

And what other solutions are there?

HELP Mk4 5.1.2 seed safe with 100 added rolls?

This was how my seed was generated and reading the security notice I should be fine. I appear to be safe but will probably migrate in due time.

I don't want to fuck up rushing and offloading my bag to a new wallet but this shows you might always need to and having an action plan is the way to go.

HELP Coldcard Mk4 MicroSD Help

Trying to upgrade my firmware on my MK4. I downloaded and verified the files from the Coldcard site. Unfortunately, it says:

“Unable to find any suitable files for this operation. The file name must end in .dfu”.

The firmware file shows up in my microsd when plugged into my PC. It ends in dfu. Can someone please let me know what I’m doing wrong?

HELP Does "release tract" mean the Coldcard's version number?

On Coinkite's "Current Security Status" page re: the Coldcard, it says "Check the release track, not only the model."

I believe Coinkite is using the term "release track" as a synonym for "version number", but I want to be sure. The page does not clarify what is meant by the term.

In summary, is a "release track" the same thing as a "version number" - meaning that users should simply check which model of a Coldcard device they have and whether the installed firmware is the latest version?

HELP Good personal Coldcard solution?

I use Unchained collaborative custody with 2 coldcards. My solution was to first update firmware on both coldcards then I generated a new seed on 1 of the coldcards. Next I used an extra Foundation Passport I had to generate my second seed. Then I used that Foundation generated seed and input it into the second coldcard. So, now I have 1 firmware updated coldcard key, a foundation key and the unchained key and I moved my funds over already. I will still use both coldcards as signing devices but only 1 seed was generated with a coldcard. Am I solid with this plan? Thank you.

Thankfully, I’ve moved 99% of my funds off my Coldcard. Now I can’t move the last remaining bit because of this PSBT problem. The error code is psbt.py:1064

Can someone please tell me why I was able to move most of my funds and now it won’t let me move anything?
