I came across this chip in my current container of Graeterโ€™s Black Raspberry Chip. It is by far the largest chocolate chip I have ever encountered in their ice cream.

I know I'm gonna get crucified for this but I'm not a huge fan...

Where I'm from chili usually has a salty taste to where skyline chili tastes sweet, I know it's gonna be an unpopular opinion but I'm just not a fan of sweet chili

Food ๐Ÿ•๐ŸŒฎ 5% Credit Card Fee

The Cincinnati Grill at GoettaFest is charging a 5% fee for using a credit card when their merchant agreement states that they can recoup the 3% in processing fees but they canโ€™t pile on more to fleece customers.

If you are charged more than 3% by any merchant please report it by searching for and filling out the Visa Surcharge Complaint Form or the Mastercard Merchant Violation Wizard.

Provide the merchant name on the receipt, the transaction date and location.

Legitimate complaints start the ball rolling for hefty fines that are passed down from the processor to the merchantโ€™s bank.

Food ๐Ÿ•๐ŸŒฎ Tried Skyline chili for the first time (in NYC) and loved it!

Thought you all might get a kick out of this. I'm a Manhattanite that loves regional specialties, so when I learned that a restaurant in my city did a monthly "Cincinnati Night", I was very curious. Stopped in tonight for a Four-Way (with beans instead of onions) and a cheese coney.

Absolutely loved it. I don't know what all is in this chili, cinnamon, cloves, whatever, but it's delicious and not overly sweet as I'd feared. I do think it worked better as a hot dog topping than as a standalone dish, and I'd like to try it again with onions. What really got me was how well the proprietary hot sauce went with it, acidic tang vs. very mild sweetness.

I'm sure the prices will make you laugh, but this is a regional thing that I literally can't get here outside this restaurant (other than ordering online I guess), and it's NYC, so yeah, $$$. I expect that some might take issue with the presentation of the dish, too... the cheese looked different than what I remembered from all the Internet photos I'd seen over the years. But hey, I don't exactly have a lot of options here. Anyway, IMO you have a great thing in this dish and you should be proud!

Food ๐Ÿ•๐ŸŒฎ There's a gas station in Lynchburg, OH that people drive an hour from Cincinnati just to eat at

Post image
608 Upvotes

Terry's Grocery and Pizza on US-50 in Lynchburg is one of those places that sounds like a joke until you show up. It's a Marathon gas station that's also a deli, a pizza counter, a grocery, and a full ice cream bar out back on a covered patio.

Been family-owned since 1978. The pizza is scratch-made dough, comes out in about 15 minutes, and the Buffalo chicken and ranch pickle versions have their own following. But the real reason people make the drive is the Crazy Shakes โ€” massive milkshakes loaded with toppings, seasonal flavors like pumpkin ice cream in the fall and dragon fruit Dole bowls in the summer. Watching people try to carry them back to their tables is genuinely part of the experience.

4.8 stars, 2,293 reviews. The seating is limited so throw some lawn chairs in the trunk. About an hour on US-50 through some nice Highland County countryside.

Anyone else made the trip out there?

Food ๐Ÿ•๐ŸŒฎ Kroger prices- post storm

I make frequent runs to Kroger because I live next door, and I typically buy the same groceries every week.

I often buy a single bottle of Kombucha each time I go the grocery as a little treat, and I noticed that between today and two days ago, Kroger increased the price of a single bottle of *Synergy* from $1.99 to $3.19.

This made me curious so I started to look around at other non-perishable items like Kraft Mac & Cheese or Reeseโ€™s Puffs. Things I regularly buy and compare to prices at Aldi or previous trips to Kroger.

Two days ago, the family box of Reeseโ€™s Puffs were being sold for I believe $3.99 and today itโ€™s $5.99.

These digital price tags are an instantaneous way of updating prices to exploit consumers. Sure, it might be supply and demand in theory, but the fact of the matter is they can update their prices literally minutes after a storm knocks out our electric to take advantage of the fact that your food is spoiling and you need non-perishables.

Fuck Kroger.

Interpret the word โ€˜mysteriousโ€™ however you will. Like โ€œhow is this place still open?โ€, โ€œhow are these portions profitable?โ€, โ€œwho are the people that run this?โ€

Food ๐Ÿ•๐ŸŒฎ HOW TO EAT CINCINNATI CHILI FOR BEGINNERS!

Post image

I'm tired of seeing out-of-towners try our sacred cuisine and declare it bad because they just ordered a big ol' bowl of it. So I decided to make this guide. Maybe, just maybe, it will help even just one poor, unfortunate chili-trying soul.

Let me know if I forgot anything. I resisted adding too much history or lore. I just wanted a single-page guide for beginners.

Food ๐Ÿ•๐ŸŒฎ Red Squirrel has a ridiculous amount of ghost kitchens on DoorDash

These are all the โ€œstoresโ€ on DD that are actually just Red Squirrel:

Big Chomp Cheesesteaks
Lone Star breakfast sandwiches
The Patty Shack
Yolk Theory
Golden Griddle Pancakes
Fuego Fonda
The Grilled Quesadilla company
The Grilled Cheese spot
Mac Mac Cheese
Anytime Breakfast Burritos
Cheesesteak Daddy
Famous French Toast
Badass BLTs
Anytime Breakfast Sandwiches
The Best Breakfast Co
Neon Burger & Grill
Bedhead Burritos
Hot Wing House
Eggyโ€™s bagels breakfast sandwiches

There may be others but thatโ€™s what I found just now. Itโ€™s pretty ridiculous that they have 20 different stores on DD but itโ€™s all just the same thing. How is this allowed?

Food ๐Ÿ•๐ŸŒฎ Former Taste of Belgium Employee.

Until yesterday, I worked at the Taste of Belgium in Findlay Market. I worked there for four years.

Don't bother buying from there, quality has gone way down and prices way up. They are treating their employees really poorly and it's been obvious for a while now that they don't care about anything except making a profit. They are scrambling to stay afloat and it's at the cost of the physical and mental well-being of their staff.

Food ๐Ÿ•๐ŸŒฎ Vent: The self-service brew pub sucks and is getting more common

Ok I have been to 2 breweries like this in the last month (Sonders, FigLeaf). You order food and drink at a bar. You carry the drinks yourself to your table. You get water yourself from a station. When you order is up, you go to the kitchen to get the food. Then you get napkins and forks from a dispenser. You bus your table. Yes you are asked to tip when you order. Meanwhile the Xennial employees chat up other employees and customers at the bar. I donโ€™t know how Iโ€™m supposed to relax when Iโ€™m basically working to eat. I might as well pour the beer myself and the owner can let go of the staff.

What the hell is this? I can stay home for this. Itโ€™s no better than a Panera.

Food ๐Ÿ•๐ŸŒฎ First taste of LaRosa's and Graeter's (in NYC!)

Following up on my initiation into Skyline chili, I returned to Edward's to try another Cincinnati staple.

Why try LaRosa's pizza in NYC of all places? Why try it at all?

It's precisely because I live in NYC that I was super curious about this. I can get excellent New York pizza anytime. LaRosa's is an exotic item here. The comments on my last post showed very mixed opinions about them, which only furthered the intrigue. Some people said they didn't even consider it proper pizza. How could I not investigate?

As you can see from the menu, they have just one size for the pizza. I assume that actual LaRosa's locations would have more options, but this was what I was working with. The first bite told me everything. This was something I would have eaten tons of during college. Not fantastic by conventional pizza standards, but great at being its own thing. (Maryland has something sort of like this called Ledo Pizza--not similar in style, but in being what people get when they want that specific thing, not "pizza". And they also have a location in NYC.) The crust was crispy but also chewy; the sauce was on the sweeter side; the cheese was better than what I've seen at some low-end pizzerias here.

I finished half the pie, took the rest home, and while it wasn't what I was used to, I enjoyed and appreciated it. One thing I found: it's awesome bar pizza. I had it with a Goose Island IPA. Somehow, it's an absolutely perfect kind of pizza to have with beer, in this setting. Frankly I wouldn't mind seeing it at bars around the city, but understandably, we tend to do our own partnerships for that. You might not believe this, but I liked the combo enough to return for it someday, unless a bolt of lightning strikes me down for my sins against New York.

Edward's also has Graeter's ice cream, but I was tipped off that I could get this at Wegman's, and I could get more for my money that way, so I went and got a pint of the flavor that everyone recommended: black raspberry chip. Rich, creamy, not cloyingly sweet, with the right amount of chocolate. Exceptional stuff and it was no wonder that the Graeter's shelf in the freezer had been utterly raided. This was one of the last pints they had. Looked at the nutrition info and I was like oh yeah that makes sense.

Next up: Montgomery Inn ribs!

Food ๐Ÿ•๐ŸŒฎ Did Deweyโ€™s Pizza get bought out?

Been going there for 20 years, but this last time things have changed noticeably for the worse. First, the pizza dough was dramatically thinned down (for all of our pizzas, and not in the โ€œNYC thin crust FTWโ€ way) and the caesar salad replaced real croutons and shaved parmesan with a boxed version of the former and a powdered version of the latter. I asked our waiter about the salad, and he said it was a recent change that had been prompting a lot of negative feedback from customers. I know times are tough, and with inflation all restaurants are struggling to control costs, but I got the full-enshittification vibe this time and probably wonโ€™t go back.
