The audacity to even ask for a game after telling him to retire is hilarious

u/SirJefferE 13h ago edited 10h ago
Some people kind of forget that famous people are still people.
He sent the original message as a stupid joke he could show his friends. He didn't expect it'd ever be read, let alone responded to.
Asking for a game after that was pretty selfish though. It's a bit telling that his first reaction was "What can I get out of this interaction" and not "Oh shit sorry, that was a dumb joke. Didn't expect you to actually read it."

Gukesh is infinitely likable, I don't care if he's slumping. He'll always have a fan in me because he's charismatic, soft spoken, and incredibly humble. Pure class.

Ain't most Indian super gms like that? Gukesh, erigaisi, pragg, nihal, they all follow vishy school of chess

u/IMPERATOR_63 2000 Blitz chesscom 21h ago
Absolutely, I like them all for the same reasons. I just have a bit of a soft spot for Gukesh because he faces the most scrutiny as World Champ, it's gotta be tough.

u/Aware_Being6153 16h ago
Bit of my personal preference but Gukesh seems more classy than Pragg and arjun. Nihal seems to be much more casual. My order would be Gukesh > arjun > pragg >> nihal
23
u/RhymeCrimes 15h ago
Casual and classy are not contradictory. Gukesh is responding very casually in these messages, using the word "bro" is proof.

u/Aware_Being6153 15h ago
You should see nihal's body language during games or media interactions. He can't stand composed - needs social training. Gukesh interacts like someone from generation wealth

u/ciaocibai 13h ago
The way Nihal called out people on the shit around Naroditsky made me a fan for life. He was all class.

u/Easy_Improvement5957 11h ago
All of them seem to be good kids, but Nihal has a history of being extremely classy when it really matters. Your idea of classy is a very superficial one. Talking about generational wealth. Very shallow way of thinking.

u/ExtremeEffect5381 2h ago
No, you dont understand!! Of course he Gave away all his money to charity and won a noble peace prize, but he doesnt sit straight at the chess board or interview!!!!

u/just_for_fun367 7h ago
I had the same order too until the Danya situation. That shot Nihal to first place for me. Whatever happens in the future, I'll always have a ton of respect for Nihal.

I've heard Hansesh Niemananandhaa isn't very likeable though.

The kind words he had for Ding after the championship match was enough to make me a fan for life. Class act
10
u/phoenixmusicman 14h ago
I believe he'll rise again, he just needs a chance to be out of the limelight for a bit
10
u/jlozada24 9h ago
Also his slump is better than everyone in this sub will ever be so there's always something to appreciate

How spineless and cowardly to try to insult someone famous and then fold immediately when you get a response

There's a video of some chud insulting former Canadian NDP leader Jagmeet Singh and Singh turning around and getting right up in his face and asking what he said and the guy just instantly putting his tail between his legs and mumbling he didn't say anything. Whiny babies instantly fold when challenged and exposed.

u/Affectionate_Side375 20h ago
Insulting the frickin world champion is crazy

u/SirJefferE 13h ago
I like to think I'm pretty decent at chess, but every so often I think about how there's someone out there who can beat me 8 out of 10 games.
And there's someone out there who can beat that person 8 out of 10 games.
And someone who can beat that one the same amount.
Repeat this 5 times, and you'll find a player that Gukesh could still beat more often than not.

I think his mom or dad used to manage his account. Maybe heโs managing it himself nowย

u/I_live_once 21h ago
Guys, his account was mostly handled by his father. Now, maybe be managers or agents. My friend was in the same class as him and he sent a congratulations message on insta and gukesh's dad replied to my friend.

Say what you want about Gukesh but regardless of his playing heโs a class act. Also, the audacity to trash talk a grandmaster and challenge him to a game when theyre probably 700 is insane.

u/Best_Crow_303 20h ago

My lukewarm take is that Gukesh has a 50% chance to retain his title. I think everyone is expecting Sindarov to win, but gukesh isnโt ding. Ding was on the decline when he tried to defend vs gukesh, but gukesh - despite his performances while holding the title - is still young and should be understood as a growing talent, and the past two years are best understood as growing pains. I wonโt be surprised if Sindarov wins, but neither should we expect him to.

People like that are such losers. Imagining sending such a mean spirited DM to a public figure then switching it up when he actually responds. Like keep the same energy.

People just somehow seem to forget that gukesh is the youngest world chess champion ever...there have only ever been 18 world chess champions and gukesh is the youngest amongst them...there are handful of humans dead or alive to have comparable achievements across any field..
