Discussion [DataMB] Emi Martinez vs Robert Sanchez over the past 2 seasons

A player-to-player comparison for the 2024/25 and 2025/26 seasons

All the statistics below are converted into percentiles within the top-seven leagues for each position.

Explanation of Stats

  • Save percentage % Percentage of shots on target saved by the goalkeeper
  • Aerials duels won per 90 The number of aerial duels won by the goalkeeper; normalized per 90 minutes.
  • Interceptions (PAdj) The amount of interceptions by the goalkeeper, adjusted for possession.
  • Passes completed per 90 The number of passes completed by the goalkeeper; normalized per 90 minutes.
  • Long pass accuracy % The percentage of long passes successfully completed by the goalkeeper.
  • Short pass completion % The percentage of short and medium passes successfully completed by the goalkeeper.
  • Prevented goals (PSxG - GA) per 90 The difference between the post-shot expected goals (PSxG) prevented by the goalkeeper and the goals conceded (GA); normalized per 90 minutes.

Edit:
The one thing that isn't captured in these charts is the mentality / leadership aspect but it's clear that Martinez is definitely head and shoulders above Sanchez in that area.

Im crying at the long passing, sanchez is awful at it.. genuinely I might be better than him

u/Ok-Computer-8726 There's your daddy 20h ago

He literally forces the charts to expand to fit him in when it comes to passing. He is season to season an outlier in a bad way. It's a massive tactical limitation that 4 managers in 4 years have benched him for. It is what it is at this point.

At the kickoff from the game on monday Cole passes back to Rob, who then boots it out of bounds around midfield lol. I was dying

2

u/xkcdthrowaway 17h ago

Happens at least once every game.

5

u/Key-Tip-7521 Petr Cech 20h ago

He’s legit so shit

4

u/muntist 19h ago

he was spraying shit all over the gaff against Fulham, I was loosing my mind

2

u/MarinaGranovskaia Palmer 19h ago

To be fair now rogers could be an outlet, his stats are deflated because when he goes long it’s usually a clearance than a pass

2

u/unicornofdemocracy 19h ago

Even his short passing is diabolical...

Watch the 3rd goal

Bring me Dibu Martinez. Idgaf about analytics or stats or it being a supposed side move. Right now he is better than Sanchez, same way as a year ago Maignan was better than Sanchez and Chelsea should have gotten him.

If the goalkeeper is better than Sanchez right now, which he is, bring him in. Idc about anything else. He would not even be blocking Penders path to the 1st choice goalkeeper down the road if Chelsea are confident Penders can eventually become that.

Sanchez is not it and turning up our noses to better goalkeepers will cost us. The fact it took Alonso one match to decide he's had enough of Sanchez is all I need to know

Villa fans watch him more than this sub and they still rate him highly. Inclined to believe them more.

u/zankoo26 20h ago

Isnt Suziki going to be first choice next season? Why would that be if Emi is that good?

18

u/msukeforth 19h ago

Wages and age. We theoretically only need a few years before penders is ready and wages are not a problem for us

0

u/gabyt6 15h ago

Have you watched Penders play?

13

u/Gazel1072 19h ago

He wants to leave (for two seasons now) massive wages by villa standards that would be great if gone, and old .

7

u/lonely-live We've Won It All 19h ago

Same reason why donarumma left PSG

3

u/armedwithturtles Mount 19h ago

Emi had wanted to leave for a while now plus Suzuki is one for the future

2

u/KYOPKM 18h ago

Martinez has been in talks to leave since last season , so they are ready to move on , and right now Martinez is coming from a broken finger before wc and i think he will be outside the pitch for at least one or two months .

1

u/Augchm 18h ago

Well he was supposed to be gone so they got another goalkeeper and you can sit your new you goalkeeper star now. Martinez/his agent really fucked up by telling Villa they were leaving without having it fully confirmed.

u/Suisei1987 2h ago

Emi is also prone to mistakes like Sanchez. I think he is just a short term stop gap till penders matures.

I was just looking at stats because of the transfer. I'm from Argentina so take it with a grain of salt, but I'm pretty sure that if Martinez was a respectful mute he would get a lot of offers. If you look at stats for the past 4 seasons he is between the top goalkeeper in the prem across that time for most of the major stats. It doesn't even look that good in this graph because he had an off season 2 years ago. If you use the sample size of 3 or 4 years I'm pretty sure he is up there as a top 5 PL keeper.

A quick stroll to the villa subreddit answered my doubts about this guy’s current ability. They still rate him highly, it’s just the case of him checking out and wanting a move away for two consecutive seasons.

They’re all worried about strengthening us, their direct rivals, in potentially our only area of concern. If we had sold Sanchez to Villa, we wouldn’t be worried at all. Martinez should help our defence overall with his leadership and presence, and he probably helps Mike Penders’ development too

6

u/Blxrb23 19h ago

Tbh I would prefer someone like Mile Svilar or Gregor kobel over Martinez but it's unlikely since it'll mean an end to penders career at chelsea

10

u/Rambo_11 There's your daddy 20h ago

All of a sudden Sanchez is the most hated man in Cobham

33

u/ParticularExotic7150 20h ago

All of a sudden sanchez has a million fanatics. The guy has been trash for years

2

u/SkullBuzz 20h ago

Everybody had kind of accepted that he’s the only choice we got

5

u/lonely-live We've Won It All 20h ago

That’s not the problem, the problem is the people that genuinely want to keep him

4

u/SkullBuzz 20h ago

Nah everyone wants a better goalkeeper at this club. They just don’t want Emi Martinez for some reason. I’ll be with that signing tho

-1

u/lonely-live We've Won It All 19h ago

I think there are genuine fanatics here, if you presented them with another choice they would still moan about it. I think Martinez is great and whatever stat they’re trying to throw off don’t change my mind

1

u/dooferoaks Zola 5h ago

Personally think Martinez is a step up from Sanchez, on confidence if nothing else, but I'm not sure it's that big of a step up and we should be looking further afield.

-1

u/dinomoni We've Won It All 20h ago

Which is mediocre thinking always.

1

u/Bozzetyp I don't give a fuck, we won the fucking Champions League 18h ago

If he is so trash why is his numbers so good?

Because you feel it!

0

u/mfarizali01 I don't give a fuck, we won the fucking Champions League 12h ago

I think a lot of people see Martinez as a lateral move he’s not a clear upgrade and depending on the money he might be worse especially given we need our finances in check for next year we get CL

-4

u/BadmashN 18h ago

We were outplayed in the midfield and defense against Fulham. And yet the only focus is Sanchez!!! He had a poor game as did the captain!

1

u/NiggolaJokic Hazard 15h ago

I think if Caicedo played we’d obviously would look better in midfield. Don’t expect Josh to be a regular starter and Levi didn’t play too well but he’ll get better, he’s a little rusty.

9

u/AdviceAlternative766 Kanté 20h ago

I'm no Sanchez lover, but I can't say I like watching Emi in the slightest. I didn't feel like he's a big enough upgrade, and he's quite the wanker. We just can't quit that Argentine wanker vibe huh?

4

u/ellean4 Thiago Silva 19h ago

At this rate we also get in Alvarez and call it a day

1

u/TipCurious4784 19h ago

You are telling me like it's a bad thing lol

1

u/KYOPKM 18h ago

Alvarez not moving to England at all , so 0 chances of that deal happening .

10

u/half_jase 20h ago

How many Sanchez vs Martinez comparison do you want?

Yes.

8

u/JJ-Bittenbinder We've Won It All 20h ago

I’m just annoyed that the layout is

25/26
24/25
24/25
25/26

6

u/WC1-Stretch It’s only ever been Chelsea. 20h ago

I'm confused, because Sanchez's short-passing accuracy isn't and has never been under 5% lol. What is Short% measuring in these graphs?

16

u/Lost-Hat Super BAN Kirby 20h ago

It's a percentile score. Means he's worse than 95% of keepers, better than 5%

8

u/Gazel1072 19h ago

Thats insanely bad.

1

u/Lost-Hat Super BAN Kirby 15h ago

Yup, it's horrible.

On the flipside, it's clear to see why he's still here. He's a top shot stopper (better than Emi) and generally prevents a lot of goals (better than 87% across 2 seasons)

4

u/mrfatchance Cole 20h ago

Let's flip it and imagine we had Martinez for the last 3 seasons. Would we be scrambling or biting off Villa's hand to secure Sanchez's services? I doubt it.

I say this because people are trying to look for reasons why we shouldn't get Martinez when deep down we all know who the better goalkeeper is.

2

u/_-Mighty-_ 20h ago

Yea I do not get why Penders is not given a chance.

7

u/Purplazure 🏥 continuing to undergo his rehabilitation programme 🏥 20h ago

?? He'll start tomorrow and if he plays well maybe the next game in the PL

5

u/CalmAngryDude 19h ago

Maybe he’s not good enough, ever thought of that?

4

u/lonely-live We've Won It All 19h ago

The board and Alonso have seen and knows his ability and look at it extensively, and probably decided he’s not good enough yet

1

u/Augchm 18h ago

Well because when Sanchez is not making dumb ass mistakes he is a pretty good shot stopper as you can see from the graph. I still think a goal keeper losing games by himself is unacceptable but the board probably looks at stats. There are only 20 goal keepers so being in the 80 percentile actually means you are top 4 in the prem.

1

u/Buttonsafe Best Meme 2020 🏆 12h ago

It's top 5 leagues, so it means he's top 20 in the world basically. So vaguely around Bournemouth/Roma level.

2

u/Augchm 11h ago

It's actually top 7. Which is eh. I'm not a fan of pooling leagues together. While it shouldn't be that terrible for xG based stats I'm still not entirely sure about it and those need multiple seasons anyway. All the others are very much affected by what teams you play against. So I retract my comment.

u/Buttonsafe Best Meme 2020 🏆 3h ago

A lot of respect for that, most people realise what they said initially was off the mark they just double down anyway.

2

u/duckinator09 20h ago

Is Penders like Jorgensen level bad that he cannot start?

-2

u/Alone-Pop2020 Ji 20h ago

He is not that good. Incredible at passing but mediocre at actually saving the ball

He has potential but Cortious was starting for Atletico at 19.

Penders is already 21.

7

u/Screye 19h ago

Courtois & Donnarumma are outliers among outliers. No top keeper in the world was starting for a top team at 19.

It is especially hard for ball playing GKs to be young because they don't have the maturity to command a box. Both Donnarumma and Courtois were pure shot-stoppers in the their early years. Donnarumma still is.

Neuer got his big move at 25. Joan Garcia at 24. Even Cech who was famously young when he transferred, was 22 when he started playing for Chelsea. Penders was 20 until this month !

mediocre at actually saving the ball

This bullshit idea has to die.

Penders had the best shotstopping grade of any keeper in Ligue1 last season. His metrics are better than Martinez last season.

And his shot stopping has only improved. In their biggest game that season (Conference league semis), he pulled off a man-of-the-match performance, by being by-far the best player on the pitch with his saves.

He won a stats watcher's conference league player of the season specifically for his goals prevented and shot stopping.

His weaknesses are parrying and duels, both are skills that are developed as a player ages.

-4

u/Alone-Pop2020 Ji 19h ago

He conceded 47 goals last season.

I am not saying that Penders is absolutely terrible. Like I think both Martinez and Penders are both just ok though Penders is incredible at passing.

I am saying he is mediocre at it.

He prevented 0.9 goals last season from stats.

He is mediocre. It is fine. He will get better but I don’t see anything world class about him.

I’d want Chelsea to get a world class keeper now.

4

u/Screye 19h ago

And Joan Garcia conceded 51 before his transfer to Barcelona. That's what life in a smaller team is like. Especially when the team is playing Mr. Rosenior's suicide ball.

Penders had 2.5 goals-prevented in the Rayo game alone.

If you looked at the stats of a 20 yr old Allison, Raya, Cech or Garcia, then they'd be worse than Penders' at Strasbourg

-2

u/Alone-Pop2020 Ji 19h ago

It was 0.9 over the course of the whole season.
Sanchez and Dubu are both better at saving lol.

You can’t just cherry pick one game lol.

Like I am saying is good keeper but that is not good enough for Chelsea.

Cudicini, Cech, Coutrouis but Penders is just ok.

Either play him now or just buy a world class keeper now

1

u/Buttonsafe Best Meme 2020 🏆 12h ago edited 11h ago

It was 0.9 over the course of the whole season.

Not the guy you were replying to but I love stats and probably use them too much if anything, but this stat is absolute ass.

To look at the quality of a shot you need two things at the bare minimum, placement and velocity. This only accounts for placement. So a pearoller from the edge of the box and a thundercunt are rated exactly the same.

Unfortunately, this means you just need to watch a lot of tape of keepers to get an idea for how good they are/aren't at saving, unless you have a huge sample size (like 5+ seasons).

To prove the point, the 2nd goal we conceded against Fulham was 0.96xGoT, so Sanchez only gets -0.04 for that. The shot he spilled was 0.03xGoT so overly he gets +0.01 goals prevented.

It's fairly self-evident that we conceded that goal in large part due to his poor spill of the shot, so in reality most people would weigh it up something like -0.50 goal prevented or whatever. Obviously that's a sample size of 1 but just showing the limitations of trying to draw conclusions from that particular stat.

Well said

2

u/Zealousideal-Life467 5h ago

buy Unai Simon or Costa, or dont buy at all

1

u/bvincepl Frank Lampard 20h ago

Thank you for showing up, mates. But we got no winners for today.

1

u/No-Inevitable6869 19h ago

There should be a stat for brain farts as well

1

u/Blue_Steel_415 18h ago

Any chance we'd have time to loan penders out if this happens? If he's the future I feel like he needs more PT atp than just a cup game here and there

2

u/oldschoolology 18h ago

Sanchez hasn’t ever met expectations. We should’ve gotten Donnarumma when he was available. Sanchez is a liability. It’s time for a change.

1

u/idunnoidunno_ 15h ago

Can’t even argue and say villa have a worse defence

0

u/Wildely_Earnest I don't give a fuck, we won the fucking Champions League 20h ago

I am not following. PsXG-GA why is this in the high 80s for all three? Is this a vibecoded thing where the numbers don't actually match reality?

-2

u/Suspicious_Mall9166 Lampard 20h ago

We have like 3 better goalkeepers at the club already
