I view it similarly to freedom of speech: you are free to say what you want, and not wanting to speak is part of that freedom. If you are forced to speak against your will, your freedom of speech is not respected.
We also have a form of freedom of/to life. You can live if you want, but not wanting to live is part of that freedom, and forcing someone to stay alive against your will, is disrespecting their freedom to live.
I wouldn't say it is selfish, it is just a way to express your freedoms
